A friend of Ben Franklin, Mr. Bartram, made a garden from plants across the 13 states, and some from across the country. His garden is now a horticultural site in the industrial area of Philly. Our bears went there to play one day, and took us with them for the photo ops.
They're in front of some prickly pear cactus here. (The cactus lay on the ground in winter, and then rise up during the summer. This was spring, so they hadn't risen yet.) Because of this trip, we now have prickly pear in our garden. It grows from the deserts in Mexico clear up to the arctic circle in Canada.
It's hard to believe this is in an industrial area, until you look close. In the background are skyscrapers on the horizon.
And, this is Philly, not the Florida Everglades, so I'm surprise to see cypress grows here. Those knobs in the ground (I think they call them knees) have the potential to form new trees. They're part of the roots.
It was still early spring, so there weren't many flowers out, but leave it to two teddy bears, and they'll find flowers.
