Meek and passive. This doesn't characterize my wife in the least.
lol...you talking about me, too, Grandpa?
great post.

Here's a test to see if you are a feminist:
Do you like driving?
Do you like voting?
Do you want your husband not to rape you?
Do you want the right to own property or to have privacy of your own medical records?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then congratulations! You're a feminist.![]()
Whoa! I get very concerned, seeing something like this. There are women in very abusive marriages who are raped, as part of that abuse. You really should spend some time also learning who the enemy is, learn about things like "borderline narcissistic personality disorder," psychopaths and sociopaths, as that "take charge man" can be a monster, a bomb waiting to go off. It's happened many, many times, and a woman who really believes what you claim to believe would be a predator's dream. Also, people aren't perfect, and the world isn't perfect. You can't distill a relationship down into a list of neat rules. In any case, you need a healthy sense of who you are and your identity, have clear boundaries. What you may think is not being a feminist sounds to me like being a doormat. That's just being naive, in a world full of predatory evil. I wish you the best, but it's not appropriate to think some man you fall for is going to be Jesus, and you don't just submit to anything and everything. That is asking for trouble.
Therein is the problem. There aren't a plethora of truly saintly men running around out there. As a matter of fact, more pigs than not (of both sexes), and the likelihood is to get a lemon, since charmers are just that, the worst of them knowing how to give you just what you want, for a time, until they're done with you.
Psychos zero in on those their perceive most controllable, as it's all about lust and control. Borderline mental cases can be some of the most charming, as they're expert fakes, and there are a lot more of them out there than you may be aware, devil's little fake sock puppets. But they will make your naive little heart go pitter patter.
Mary in a way im glad you have such a positive view... the life of a wife for many women is one of extreme abuse including mental torment, physical abuse, sexual assault, refusing the wife access to friends and family, refusing the wife access to money. For some marriage is a cage of torment. Your view is ok (not my idea of a relationship though) so long as you have a partner who is equally positive
Right man, right woman. I agree Marc. If it is the Lords will for one to be married, The lord will provide the right man for a woman or a right woman for the man.The point you are missing is that if one prayerfully seeks the Lord's counsel in choosing a spouse; he/she is almost certain to find one of the truly saintly men.
Zoli,
I think Mary relies on the premise that if she prayerfully seeksthe Lord's guidance in choosing a spouse, she will NOT wind up in an abusive relationship.
I share your abhorrence of abusive relationships! I believe that if you ask any abused wife whether she sought the Lord's counsel before entering the relationship, she will admit that she did not.
Ive no idea what two wrongs u mean or if your just simply saying that your right n I'm wrong. Ive scrolled down a bit now n see you answered again so...better job in the next answerHas your mom ever told you that two wrongs don't make a right?
Hi Marc
I know from some groups I belong to some women who are very religious, who pray...I dunno I guess im saying women who you would approve of their approach to marriage. The problem is the person they thought they were marrying was wayyyyyyyyyy different. You can guess how the story ends.
Let's review what this thread is about.
A young teenager comes on posting a copy and paste from a cult site, telling woman to be slaves and servants, and how they must be married.
Some abused women, some single women, and myself (married 35 years!) disagree with the premise of the OP. I especially object to the fact the OP didn't bother to write it out herself. (And one of the longest copy and pastes in a long time!)
AoK decides to tirade about feminism being the root of all evil, and how he will never marry and in fact, left a church because a woman fell in love with him. A special brand of paranoia.
So a few women agree with the OP, but really don't post any verses to support, or show an understanding of the exegetics of the Bible on this issue. Hey, they are entitled to their opinion, I do hope they don't end up in a relationship with a man who is a dominant abuser, using the Bible to justify his cruelty.
And we get blasted for not being nice to each other? I think the abused women might have something to say about the kind of Christian culture that "demands" submission, forgetting that we are all to submit to one another.(Eph. 5:21)
The OP is a recipe for abuse, for power corrupts (the man in charge!) and absolute power corrupts absolutely!
I am a feminist, and it is because I have been involved in counseling abused Christian women. When I was helping at an abuse center with a group, uncovering the dynamics of abuse, it took 3/4s of a year to realize every single woman in the group was a Christian. That shocked me to my core.
Read "A Cry for Justice" by Jeff Crippen. He documents the entire patriarchal movement, and how the Christian culture of "wifely submission" leads to severe abuse, mental, emotional and especially physical.
That is what we need to be discussing, not this misguided attempt by a teenager to foist her church's aberrant doctrine on this forum and the women in it.
That "unjaded" viewpoint is naivete. While it looks pretty in fairy tales, it sets women up for some really bad treatment. I hope she is lucky enough to find a good guy, but there is no way to ensure that--not the purity culture, not the "List of Godly Traits in a Spouse," not prayer, not meeting him in church.Even someone like me, a person in sympathy with most of the goals of feminism, can applaud Mary's unjaded reliance on her understanding of Scripture, without necessarily agreeing with all her views.

I believed that. Many other good women have believed that. We got screwed over. Then when we go public with our stories, we are told to be quiet "for the cause of Christ." We are called feminists when we point out the dangers of patriarchy, even when it calls itself "complementarianism." We were created to be ezers: fellow warriors. Reducing us down to cute little helpers belittles the image of God that we are to portray and sets us up for abuse.
Misty,
IMO, men who abuse women are detestable! Do you personally know of any abused wife who prayerfully asked the Lord to guide and approve her choice before entering the relationship? IMO, such a condition is impossible.
I don't believe that ANYONE who prayerfully seeks the Lord's guidance in choosing a spouse will end up in a bad relationship.

Sir, with all respect - girls in my n other generations struggle with the versus u raise. We do not like the interpretation that women submit to their husband as it implies so many things that women across the world experience as negative - from needing to be meek n passive...through to total domestic abuse. We see marriage as a partnership of equality, and whether the verses express it those terms or not, that's how we prefer it to be interpreted as we have had way too much exposure to the worst men can do.
