paul says near there, or elsewhere, that the spirit eventually teaches the brain words to use for the things of the spirit. (God by His Spirit teaches our spirit)... they aren't seen in english(or the bible you read).... it is only spiritually learned/revealed from the Father when He permits it (like Jesus told Simon Peter, and Yochanan the Immerser told his disciples, and elsewhere this is revealed in GOD'S WORD)...

"What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." (1 Cor 14:15)

Is this the verse you are referring to? I guess you could say the brain is involved in understanding. When you say they aren't seen in English or the Bible we read, I would be careful if something isn't supported by the Bible, but if it is supported by the Bible then good. Perhaps you were thinking of this verse: "Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart." (2 Cor 3:3) ?

Good questions, plus there is the fact that in Hebrew the word for " spirit " is feminine, while in Greek usually nueter, and then masculine in Latin

It's rather hard to pin down a sex for God because God transcends things like " male and female ", which is similar to the problem of defining the name God gives in Exodus 3:14, ( " I AM " Vs " I will Be " Vs " I was " ) as there is no tense in any language that covers " eternal " or " was, is , and will be " simultaneously

In rabbinical literature the spirit is referred to as the " shekinah ", a feminine Hebrew word taken from a root word pertaining to the nesting place of doves , although the term is not used in the Tanakh, that I know of

I think it's interesting that in Revelation the New Jerusalem descends adorned as a bride, as opposed to a bridegroom

" But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all " - Galatians 4:26 ( Note: Eve was known as the Mother of all living )

Jerusalem is the " city of the living God " - Hebrews 12:22

Galatians mentions Sarah as being representative of Jerusalem , but the chapter starts by saying

" Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all
" But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father "

Interestingly, a Jewish wedding takes place at the time appointed by the father , the day and hour are only know by the father

Some messianics believe the physical body of the Tzaddik ( the " righteous One " AKA the Moshiach, the Messiah) already walks the earth and at the time appointed by God will be indwelt by the spirit, in essence a marriage of it's own

What you say about gender is correct; but I would like to point out that gender in Hebrew nouns has little to do with maleness or femininity.

This is somewhat simplistic but usually works if we remember that it is a generality:

nouns that convey: service, support, foundation, or feeling are usually feminine.

nouns that convey: leadership, action, direction or thought are usually masculine

I am not sure how gender assignment functions in Greek or whether there is a similar rule.

Where is the best place to look for the translation?

At E-sword.net, you can download a very useful suite of free Bible study software.

At biblesupport.com, you can download thousands of reference works and books formatted to work with E-Sword.

The best Hebrew/ English lexicon, IMO, is Brown, Driver, and Briggs .

The best Greek / English lexicon, IMO is Bauer Arndt and Gingrich; but the word studies by both Kittel and Robinson are very helpful as well.

to make it even better they are all available free at biblesupport.com

Does anyone think the Holy Spirit could be our conscience?
To an extent, the early Rabbis did. (Do some research on "Yetzer Ha Ra" and "Yetzer Ha Tov.")

Remember the little angel and the little devil sitting on the left and right shoulders in some of the Bugs Bunny cartoons, each telling Bugs to do either Bad, or Good? That is the Jewish concept of the Yetzers............ which is surprising because Walt Disney was considered to be rather unsympathetic toward Jews.

Does anyone think the Holy Spirit could be our conscience?

well no. if that were the case, everyone would have the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is also known as the Spirit of God.

God Himself, is Spirit...not a spirit ...but simply Spirit

People do have a conscience of course...otherwise, we would not know the difference between right and wrong

The Bible says that there is no excuse regarding the knowledge of God but the Holy Spirit ONLY indwells believers

BTW, when I mention "Rabbis", it needs to be remembered that there were no ordained Rabbis in Jesus' day, as we have now.

The Holy Spirit is Gods reality in us, His witness and deposit of the work he has done in salvation.

He is the thing that warms our souls, that shows us the right way, that encourages us and tells us what we are doing is a blessing to Him and the body of Christ. He is our communion and through whom all spiritual gifts work.

Our conscience is the emotional feeling you get when you feel bad about a certain behaviour. It says I should not have done that. It appears to be a mix of emotional bonds with those you love and do not want to hurt and it tells you that you have done something wrong. Unfortunately if you shut love out, harden your hearts, do not let empathy, sympathy work, you conscience will go silent, which is what Jesus accused the pharisees of doing. It leads to blatent hypocracy and no desire to find reality, because reality does not matter any more.

It is obviously a more difficult problem to determine who has the Holy Spirit and who does not, because many heretics have claimed they do, when there actions and fruit have clearly shown they are either nuts or evil, and some possibly possessed.

I have heared prophesy or words from the Lord which have touched me, and some which I would say are merely someone trying to say something nice and aspirational.

Clearly a lot of people believe they can experiment with the Lord, rather than wait until they know what they are doing and why. So knowing the leading of the Holy Spirit, baptism, and indwelling is clearly more difficult to discern than many would have you believe. Some here want to declare everything with solid lines, but things in the Lord are never that clear cut, so you need to be very careful, or you will find the Lords judgement can fall.

There are also deceiving spirits and emotional experiences that are not helpful, and are distracting from the work of the Lord.
Once people go solely into the "spiritual" it appears they loose all sense of normal reality, so it is not suprising a lot run away from this insanity after it has caused great damage.

Does anyone think the Holy Spirit could be our conscience?
Yes, essentially.
Because 'he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit,' 1 Cor 6:17

flob...have you ever read anywhere in scripture or had it taught to you, that the Holy Spirit is anyone other then the 3rd Person of the Trinity?

He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit does not mean conscience

it is important to actually believe what scripture teaches and not insert our beliefs into the Bible and then attempt to make the Bible agree with us

don't you think so?

Ember, I am not trying to be pedantic, but you do have to build models of the world, and often to understand what the Lord is saying through the word can take a lot of time. I remember how certain I was of many things and Gods grace over shadowed me, and in time I have changed.

There is also a problem that the Lord does bring things about so he prompts and convicts and it is difficult to say if it ourselves, our conscience or the Spirit, we just feel very bad.

There maybe a pedantic point that whatever is convicting us is less important than the fact we are being convicted.

Hope this helps, from a sinner walking with the Lord, knowing my own frailty.

he may be closer than you think, but to realize the truth, requires finding out what the
original "SCRIPTURE TEACHES"
either from the original language , and/or along with revelation from the Father in heaven,

and english just does not do justice.......

few ever care enough to find out. (when Yahweh permits)

what are you actually trying?

it's not working on me, but it is disruptive...you appear to undermine what you actually do not understand

build models of the world? listen...you are speaking for yourself...and 2 points off for overuse of the word pedantic

I guess you might find pouring out your heart to God pedantic? or perhaps too pedestrian?

I'm sorry you are a sinner....I am a saint, saved by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ...according to Paul who wrote a great portion of the NT

You appear to see the Holy Spirit as a convicting spirit in most of what you write

He is my helper, my guide and the Spirit of the Almighty and all that is too wonderful grasp...your understanding seems to lower His station to your level

Just a quick question: Do you believe that the Holy Spirit can talk to us by thoughts, after one asking for God to helps us and clarify things in our life?

Or do you believe this is against the idea that one must have faith and trust God?

God bless!

what are you actually trying?

You are like talking to a school teacher and I am just a pupil having the temerity to question what you are dolling out.

We obviously do not agree or experience the same things. You also are not very honest about what is going on in the church, everyday, people claiming to speak for the Lord and failing badly.

I am also not doing a list of the work of the Lord in our lives, or ideas about what and how He works. I would not dishonour Him like that, dear Lord. My concern is a simple lack of respect or sensitivity, as if My Lord does not hear and know our thoughts before we have them.

When I say I am sinner, I always emphasis my debt to the Lord, and my need of Him to guide me, even in this conversation.
For me, I am commanded to appreciate everyones contribution, no matter where from, because it all has value.

Strangely even Satan is subject to Gods purposes. So I say amen to the role of the Lord has in your life, like in my own.
But for most christians I talk to, even the most "spirit" filled, often insight and understanding is sorely lacking, so I wonder both at your put downs and desire to run away from anything I care to share, and your desire to make me your enemy.

Why is that? Do we not worship the same risen Christ, guided by the same Holy Spirit, or have you discerned something else I am unaware of?

paul says near there, or elsewhere, that
the spirit eventually teaches the brain words to use for the things of the spirit.

Paul makes that statement in reference to himself and his authoritative speaking and writing of Scripture, not in reference to the Holy Spirit's work of illuminating believers in understanding Scripture:

"My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words. . .we do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature. . .of God's secret wisdom. . .This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words."

This does not grant the authority of truth to believers' illumination by the Holy Spirit.
Only illumination in agreement with and limited to the whole counsel of God would have any authority of truth.
