Yeah, yeah, yeah, someone is going to tell me we have a Bible Discussion Forum already, but obviously that's not the same thing. Most of the "Bible discussion" is borderline, at best: doctrine stuff, scolding on pet theories (how women should act, how the Sabbath is supposed to be kept, or not kept, the evils of money, world events, or OSAS, etc.), or assumptions of other pet theories, (can we say "End Times?") I'd like a forum where people are actually studying the Bible.

Old Hermit has a great one going on right now about Hebrews. He's had another about the crossing of the Red Sea.

Right now, I'm studying Numbers and just realized something most people assume is obvious -- including me -- but I didn't get the entire significance of it until today. I doubt I'm getting the entire significance of it even now, but if others, who just happen to be studying Numbers too, would join together, we could share what we're learning. And it doesn't have to be Numbers. It could be Jude, or John, or Malachi. But the idea is have threads with people studying whichever part of the Bible they're studying and then, even years from now, if someone came along and found a thread on the book they're then studying, they can see what others discovered in the past. And, since it's a forum, if they have questions no one else thought to ask before, they still can, under the assumption that someone else is also studying any given book of the Bible any day of the year.

It also would help people to study because they might consider themselves more accountable in a smaller group studying a book together. You'll feel kind of dumb talking about Chapter 2 with the rest of the group, unless you studied Chapter 1 first. Sort of like the concept of joining a book club, except this book is more purposeful than book club books.

Added bonus, people interested in a Bible Study can actually find one on this site, instead of unending debates on OSAS.

And if this idea pans out, one other idea -- is there any way of dividing it up into sections/books, so anyone interested in finding others who have or are studying a certain book in the Bible don't have to check out page after page to find all the previous, or ongoing, posts on that book?

I joined this site because I saw a couple of posts where people were studying something in the Bible. I thought this could help me to learn more. On a rare occasion, it does just that. But on most days I find sermons to no one in particular or questions based on world views. That's fine for "Bible Discussions," but it's not "Bible Study."

This cannot work, because I would have to run it... and everyone would have to accept MY interpretations with no arguing.

What's that? You agree? Except that it has to be YOUR interpretations we all follow?

Huh? Did I just hear a few more people expressing the same opinion?

I'm a grown up. I gave up on opinions a while ago. (My signature means something. I really am guileless.) So, I'm interested in Bible Study, not Bible Opine. We already have Bible Opine. Its called "Bible Discussion." See the difference?

Of course that's a great idea....but you are surely smart enough to know we won't be picking up manna off the ground but might have to take a broom to it instead?

hey I have an idea!

why not be able to eject those who are determined to derail the thread and just take it over...now they would not be banned, but for them, that particular thread, would not be putting out a welcome mat

seems I have heard this idea before.....mmmmmmmmmmm.........

That would be good but it still leads to other issues as depending on what church and denomination we belong to depends on how you were told to study the word.

For instance in the original Greek words have multiple meanings and multiple usages, yet some have been taught to use just one and one alone. Then you also have newer study guides that have added to or changed the meanings of the original Greek words, such as diakonos (deacon) that is being discussed in another thread. The original meaning is a ordained minister/servant, yet now day study guides have expanded that role and/or just made it say just servant.

So, what do you do when everyone starts discussing determining the time of the "Rapture"? (Since you hold the same "opinion" that I do.)

If you have no opinion in a study, then you get little more than this...

This is a very real depiction of most CoC Bible Studies I attended:

"Brother Smith, would you read verse #1?"
Brother Smith reads it.

"Brother Brown, can you tell us what that verse means?"
Brother Brown: "Just what it says!"

The whole class: "Amen!"

"Brother Jones, would you read verse #2?"

I nominate Old Hermit as a teacher. He shows great respect for what is said. I've read his material on Hebrews. It's a bit detailed, too much in some areas (I understand why) but what I like is his breakdown of the words and phrases to get to the meaning. Again, I believe he respects what is written. That's a big plus. He stays with the text.

Willie, have you seen Old Hermit's material on Hebrews? It's not as you might think it is.

When Christians meet to read and study the bible it is not for me to ridicule them in their sincere efforts at trying to reach a better understanding of scriptures. Maybe some congregations don't have folks who have the ability to instruct and teach as we might like. I appreciate and pray for those who try to learn together.

Old Hermit's study on Hebrews is prefaced with a statement of purpose. The Hebrew study is not a place for extensive debate according to the statement, as I recall. Outlines of the book and word definitions are offered. Stays with the context.

Did I say, "most CoC studies?" I apologize, I thought I said "most CoC Bible Studies I attended."

Sorry, but I don't consider just agreeing with an opinion to be really "learning" much of anything.

Then it wouldnt be for you. You dont want anyone but YOU to lead. That is the real issue here isnt it? Start your own bible study with all your WOF buddies. You can have it all to your own liking with JP heresy and all! Problem solved!!

I fumbled. Your experience is far different from mine. Very much so. The majority of studies I have been to have been in-depth. Very much thorough.

And never have I ever been to a study where anything close to how you depicted ever occurred. Never.

Well, of course that was a bit of facetious and humorous hyperbole. But In most Bible Studies, I honestly have found that discourse and true, sharing discussion is sorely lacking. Generally the "students" are told by the one in charge what is the prevailing understanding of a passage according to the denomination or faction supporting the study, and any questions usually aren't answered by much more than just more-than-mildly biased interpretations showing how the predominant belief justifies their position.

Maybe I need more sleep (my husband says I walk around in a sleep deprived state most of the time haha) but with regards to the bolded above, the thought flashed through my mind, that some of us use English the same way.

OK, well I thought that was funny anyway........

Okay. You're probably right. There's a lot of parroting going on. Bible study ought to include some certainties, as in: This is definite, this is what the passage means. But then also open discussion ought to be allowed.

I don't know, but I suspect many churches are bound to teach their denominations beliefs in bible studies. I don't know if there's any room for discussion in bible study for certain doctrines.

But I see what you mean. Appreciate the clarification. And agree.
