The above quoted segments prompted me to thinking about the "worthyness" of a 'sticky-worthy' button...

Just as we have a 'Like' button to indicate that we "like" a post - what if we had a 'Sticky-Worthy' button ( or an option added to the 'Thread Tools' menu - or as a separate entry on the bar - at the top of the thread page ) to indicate that we believe the thread is "worthy" of being a 'sticky' thread?

Whether the total-times-the-button-has-been-pressed was visible to the membership or not -- would it not be useful to the site staff?

Because all of the threads that are stickied in any of the forums, are visible to EVERYONE, not just site staff. And if the "collected data" is only visible to site staff, then what's the use of having it stickied if all the members here can't see it also?

I totally agree, Willie-T. People do not like their posts to be labeled anything but "LIKE". If we had other options to label posts, like "DISLIKE", "BORING", "What does this have to do with anything?", "R U 4 Real?" or worse, it would only cause some folks to have an anxiety attack or explode in rage!

The "collected data" I am talking about is how-many-times-the-sticky-worthy-button-has-been-pressed.

In other words - at the top of the thread page might be a number - next to the "sticky-worthy" button - indicating how many times the button has been pressed by members. It might be 0, 1, 2, or 132. Like a vote in a poll, each member could "vote" only once. The number may or may not be displayed for all to see; still, the number would be useful for site staff... ( so is the idea )

I am not saying there should be anything automatic about it -- it is simply information for the site staff to use - in understanding that <this-number-of-members> believe this ought to be a sticky.

The site staff STILL makes the decision(s) as to what threads to make - and not make - a sticky thread.

For once I'm in agreement with you. Having all of the posts 'sticky' would defeat the intented purpose. There is a button at the top of the thread that you can vote on as to whether or not you like the thread. It would be nice if the accumulated vote was visably displayed.

All this would do is get like minded people to vote to sticky threads that fit their theology and whatnot. For example all Calvainists would want to advise pro-Calvinism threads to be stickied instead of people objectively selecting quality threads. Which the. Leads to admins having to sort who wants it stickied because it matches their theology and how many votes it gets out of genuine interest.
Land may encourage people to create more accounts so they can get more votes for their threads. Admins know what topics and threads are worth being stickied. They don't know all the drama that would come with letting us vote.

Okay, my knee-jerk reaction to this was well represented by Willie's first response.

That said, I thought you wanted stickies to really stick, in which case, wow! Start on Page 10 to find new post? (See? That's where we were going.)

But now that I see the idea is to see how worthwhile a post is to read without actually sticking? That's a different ball game.

Different ball game. Not necessarily saying I like the idea. I have questions to learn more to find out if I like the idea.
1. What if original post was pretty bad/totally disagree/you've-got-to-be-kidding bad/time for me to pledge again bad? But someone comes along and says something worth reading later on? Wouldn't it look like everyone is loving the OP? In which case, exactly how far are you willing to read all the responses before getting to sticky-worthy response? Page 10? Page 32? Page 438? Some post get really long, and I'd rather read a phone book. (For anyone who doesn't remember phone books, it's pre-Internet thing. lol)

2. We've got factions on this site. We really do. What stops this from not being faction-oriented? Everyone who goes off nonstop hawking their pet theories has fans of pet theories, so, poof! Instant 500 range Sticky point rating. There's a poll in BDF that breaks my heart because so many are so completely lost about what the Bible really says, it's sad. (Nope. Not going to say which one, but I can't imagine someone else imagining another poll, instead of the one I'm thinking about.) It's very factiony.

3. You want it to be anonymous? Every site I've ever been on that got into anonymous quickly became a fanboy site, with enough trolls to cover every toll bridge in the world. (Some hyperbole in that.) Anonymous is too big of an escape-responsibility clause. Add to that, I'm not quite asimpressed when someone who always agrees with me agrees with me again, as I am when someone who never agrees with me agrees with me. Same deal with other folks too. If Faction A dude is so impressed with Faction Anti-A dude, he gives a sticky to it, then someone did something right and I want to read what it is.

4. Albeit, I sometimes use the Like button to let people know I read what they said, but had no need to write something back, it seems to me Sticky Button is merely an "I really liked this" button. Since that's the usual reason I click Like, isn't that redundant?
