The fruit is real, but the photo looks a little doctored. Yes, it's called a pomegranate. They taste great. Sweet, but a little tart. They're excellent in fruit salads or just by themselves.

I've always wanted to try one, but haven't.
Have you tried drinking Pomegranate juice? They do sell it pretty much anywhere, like Walmart. I have some Blueberry Pomegranate juice in my fridge. Iz not bad, comrade.

Yes, it does. But let's just say, in that book, pomegranate is a metaphor for something else.
