So what do you all think of SeaWorld two years after Blackfish came out? Are some of the parks better than others when it comes to keeping these large animals healthy and safe?

Also, what do you all think of Howl-O-Scream? Is this just a way to attract a larger audience? Do you think it's inappropriate to have such scary attractions at a family theme park? Is it not a good thing for a Christian person to go to?

I really don't know much about sea life to say that they are in danger at SeaWorld, but I was saddened by Blackfish. And I once went when they had the Howl-O-Scream going on and it was very uncomfortable. They had "zombie people" walking around the park following you.

So please let me know what you all think.

Never heard of "Blackfish."

I doubt I would feel enticed to attend something called HollowScream.

As for black fish, I'm not really sure what to say other than Orcas are pretty aggressive, but they are nice to see.

I only went to Sea World (Orlando) once and that was over 20 years ago. I doubt that I would recognize the place today. Back then it was mostly animal shows. There were no rides. No zombies either.

I see many questions that are not questions. You seem to have already decided what is your opinion.

As for me, I have heard nothing of all this. Blackfish? I'm going to take a shot-in-the-dark guess it is a documentary about how aquatic animals are mistreated at public aquaria.

I just wanted to know what others' opinions of the park were. I don't really know how to feel about it myself. I don't know why you would assume I have decided my opinion already. If you read my questions carefully I'm on the fence.

I grew up going there but now I feel I should consider otherwise. That's why I want to know how Christians feel about it.

And yes, that's what Blackfish is.

I have realized that they are not bullying me, they're just a bit sarcastic sometimes. I have learned how to handle them, by being sarcastic back! haha

Lots of people are scared of zombies.

But since zombies eat brains... most people have nothing to fear.

Hi Molly,

I admit to feeling a bit torn about places like this... and even zoos and regular aquariums. I love going to them but I often wonder what it must be for the animals--who would want to be confined to a small yard or pool when there is an entire plain or ocean to explore?

A friend pointed out to me that if it's an animal that was born or raised in captivity, it probably doesn't know any better and might not survive in the wild, and I can see that. I also believe that many animals are in danger of extinction if some kind of intervention doesn't take place, which can include places such as this where the animals are kept... So... I can't take a stand either way.

As for Halloween-themed events, I have nothing against Halloween and feel it is a personal conviction. I've been to a few theme parks during Halloween but gravitate to the "cutesy" aspect (little kids dressed as pirates and princesses) rather than any of the gore or fright. I don't go to haunted houses or any of that. Out of my own convictions, I wouldn't attend something that was focusing on death (or the living dead) or fear... But that's just me, and I do think that Christians will feel convicted differently.

Something else I wanted to add is that my avatar is a picture of a female Nile crocodile I saw at a place in FL. I posted about this in another thread (and included pictures), but the crocodile actually came up to where I was standing and raised herself up against the cage, nearly face-to-face with me, as if she wanted to get a good look at me, too.

All that separated us were two wire cages that were positioned so that the spaces between were too big for an adult's hand to pass through both fences (I know, because I tried after she swam away), but I COULD fit my hand through the first cage. In the picture in my avatar, she is only about 6 inches from my camera. But the scary part is, the openings ARE big enough for a child's hand to pass through, so if she did that again, a little kid could have reached through and tried to to touch her.

I do think about the questions you're asking when I see animals in places like that. This female was in a relatively small pen with two males, and I have to wonder, what is that like for them when they were once able to swim up and down the entire Nile river? And, a place such as this has its own hazards. There was a sign on the pen explaining that the park had done away with things like straws because vistors had carelessly thrown trash in their pen, and this beautiful crocodile nearly died because she had gotten a piece of plastic wedged in her stomach.

On one hand, I feel disturbed that these animals are now prisoners in tiny confined spaces. But on the other hand, if no one was running institutions like this... I would never get to see them, either.

It definitely is difficult to think about and come to a conclusion. I guess we need to take it one step at a time. Like I said, I grew up going to SeaWorld and after watching that documentary I felt very bad about it. On the other hand, I've heard that SeaWorld is now working on improving conditions for the animals after much criticism. So I guess I will have to see. I haven't been in four years. The reason I was thinking about it was because my mom wants to go for my birthday next month because I grew up loving the theme park.

That's such an amazing experience that you had with the crocodile! I bet you were excited to see it that close to you. I recently went to the zoo and saw the giraffes pretty close. I was thrilled! But like you say, are they happy? Having trash thrown into their home seems so degrading for such magnificent creatures.

Also, I do feel convicted not to go to anything haunted. I get scared easily and have a hard time sleeping even with a Goosebumps episode! LOL

Goosebumps... ah, those were the days. I remember the only thing that really scared me was the opening credits, when the dog's eyes glowed.

About Sea World and the like, there is another point to consider - their existence raises the average person's awareness of the creatures in the sea that are in danger of being extinct. Most people will never get out on the sea (myself included, probably - no real reason I avoid it, but I don't see any reason to go either) and if there were no places like Sea World most people would probably never even be aware of the problem. And if they were, they probably wouldn't care. Seeing a dolphin up close is much different from watching "Flipper." Much easier to get people to care.

For the record I'm not saying those places are necessarily good things. I'm just saying there can be a good aspect to it.
