i think calling any sort of music a sin isn't far different from calling Swahili or German language "sinful" -- it's what is said that matters, not the quality of the intonation. food that tastes bad to one person tastes good to another, and disliking the flavour doesn't mean there is no nutrition, just as candy tastes good but doesn't give you any lasting energy.
the Psalms specifically encouraged using almost every instrument known to the people of the day to be used to praise the Lord (lead in to timbrel solo?). there is certainly no precedent of thought in them that some instruments can't be used for worship - quite the opposite, the Psalms teach that 'everything that has breath' should praise the Lord, even the hills and trees and the whole earth.
the bible doesn't say "this style of music is good' and 'this style of music is bad' -- though many with strong opinions against one kind of music or another will argue that some genre is inherently evil. this isn't supported by scripture. i think the best way to look at this sort of attitude is to consider what the apostles had to teach about meat sacrificed to idols -- a person may argue that rock music is sinful because of what is associated with some secular musicians whose music is similar - though the lyrics & intention of the songwriter may be entirely different.
So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”),yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
(1 Corinthians 8:4-13)
some are still so accustomed to living in the flesh that when they hear rock music (for example, but the same goes for any genre), they think of some sinful thing or attitude, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
if you're blessed by some believing musician who plays the most outlandish and obscure noise format imaginable, it is certainly not sin for you, or for the musician through whom God is glorified.
some brother or sister might be offended by the noise though - for them, they should not listen to it, just like someone who can't accept that pork is 'clean' to eat shouldn't be eating it, because their faith is not strong enough to accept it without and you shouldn't play it for them if they can't 'receive it with thanksgiving.' just the same, you shouldn't play it for them, because it will cause contention, or may cause their faith to falter.
now concerning clean or unclean meat, what the apostles taught was sinful wasn't the eating or not eating of it, but falling into legalistically declaring that gentiles had to follow a kosher diet, or be circumcised, or follow some custom given to the Jews. from this we might infer that calling rock music sinful is itself a sin.
if a musician praises God, and the Spirit moves in him, and through his music does the work of God in edifying, encouraging or ministering to others - is it not blasphemy to call this good work of the Spirit, 'the work of Satan' all because he uses an electric guitar, scratches at a turntable or a keyboard with a dubstep effect, he raps or he sings and shouts in a loud scratchy voice?
if God is praised, God is praised. let every created thing praise the LORD!
