HOW DO I KNOW? I live 3 miles from the Navy's TOP GUN School. And I have watched in amazement from my Back Yard as the took of on NIGHT TRAINING MISSIONS, more than once. When they turn East after take off, ALL I CAN SEE IS THOSE BRIGHT ORANGE BALLS OF LIGHT, SPEEDING AWAY. Sorry to pop your UFO theory bubble, but they are the afterburners of our super fast modern JET FIGHTERS. I saw an F-22 Raptor, trying chase an F-35 at low altitude over town one day, when the F-35 kicked in the afterburner, it pulled away from the F-22 like it was standing still. THEY ARE VERY FAST.

The F-22's, I can hear coming a long ways away. The F-35's after they are airborne, can switch to cruising mode, and are then much quieter. When they have the throttle wide open they are very noisy, however when just cruising, they are nearly overhead before I can hear them. Both birds make a lot of noise on takeoff, but the F-35 can quiet down, especially when it flying low over the town. The Top Gun School tries to avoid complaints. One day I was in the back yard and two of them were almost directly overhead at a low altitude before I noticed the noise. They were so low that I could see the pilots.
