That's wonderful, Lil! I hope you can continue to see the Lord's blessings in your life.
October is awesome! It's my favorite month because I was born right in the middle of it.
haha! My birthday's not until December. Which it's odd I'm not a huge fan of December. I like my birthday. I like Christmas. But I don't like the cold that comes with it all. -_-

Last night, I watched Exodus: Gods and Kings. I'm not going to be kind.

In the beginning Ridley Scott created Exodus and it was bad. Really bad. My suspicions were confirmed when within the first minute, the movie got basic details wrong: the time scale (the general consensus is that the Exodus happened around 1440BC, not in 1300BC, as the movie stated). Also, the Israelites were slaves in Egypt for 215 years, not 400 years.

I'm not sure how Ridley Scott buggered up so badly, but I guess we'd be expecting too much if this weren't another Prometheus (admittedly that movie is rather average, but still not this terrible). What I want to know, is who throws millions upon millions of dollars at directors and then only offers them half-ar$ed scripts? It's happened all too often!

Exodus: Gods and Kings is the story of Moses from his time as a general (um?) to his crossing of the Red Sea. This movie features spectacular visuals and an impressive scope, but this is largely for naught since the script is so dull and lifeless. It has no heart. The main actors/actresses are severely miscast e.g. Christian Bale as Moses is normally a great actor, but here he looks bored out of his skull and Joel Edgerton as Ramses is just silly. Several supporting actors/actresses are both miscast and underused e.g. Sigourney Weaver and Aaron Paul (of Breaking Bad fame). The rest of the cast do a good to great job. But it's rather infuriating to see most of the cast confused to find themselves in a biblical epic. Honestly, the viewer has no reason to care about anyone in this movie. So why bother?

Now let's talk about the main event - God. He's barely in the freaking movie! Well, he's there as some snooty-nosed kid for a few scenes, but there's nothing holy or loving about Him. Ridley Scott has somehow removed everything exciting about the story of Moses and tried to make a movie with it. There's almost no semblance of the supernatural to be found anywhere. The famous court scenes between Moses and Pharaoh and later, the magicians - not there. The Ten Plagues of Egypt - present and one of the better scenes in the movie, but caused by presumably naturalistic means (funnily enough, the crocodile scene in the Nile is one of the highlights). God doesn't appear to the Israelites as a column of fire or a pillar of smoke. The Israelites don't even cross through the middle of the Red Sea with walls of water either side. And Moses conversing with God on Mount Sinai is covered in several seconds. Bah!

For all of its pomp and ceremony, Exodus: Gods and Kings is dead in the water (pun intended). The title suggests a supernatural showdown between the gods of ancient Egypt and the true God of Israel, but we don't get that. We get two bratty kids brawling in a huge wonderland theme park. Shame on you, Mr Scott. Shame on you! You're not getting off scott-free with this one.

A visually impressive steaming pile of crap. Avoid this movie and check out Darren Aronofsky's Noah. It's subversive, but (mostly) brilliant. If you want the story of Moses, watch the excellent Prince of Egypt. Or better yet, read the Bible.

I saw something in an antique shop yesterday that I decided I could not live without! Then I saw the price tag and decided that the thing wasn't really all that important.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is the story of Moses from his time as a general (um?) to his crossing of the Red Sea.
The first-century Jewish historian Josephus (whose references to the existence of Christ we value today) actually writes in fair detail about Moses' military career and his various campaigns as a member of Pharoah's court. Later in life, when he chose to forsake his Egyptian upbringing, is where Moses tends to focus when he writes Exodus. You can see the author's attitude in the way the write (much as you can with Luke, James, Paul, etc), and it is pretty clear through Exodus and Numbers that the author does not think particularly highly of Moses...that Moses was given more responsibility than he deserved, and that he often felt others to be wiser or better suited for leadership than Moses. It makes sense, to me, that Moses would avoid mentioning his own Egyptian honors and conquests in the very books that he downplayed his own abilities to Yahweh face-to-face. But the enslaved Hebrews knew exactly who Moses had been and had passed down his history through other apocryphal writings outside of the Tanakh.

Fun musing: Moses says he is slow of tongue. He doesn't actually say he has a speech impediment, which is what many people assume was meant by this "excuse." I think I heard it first from Chuck Missler (but I could be wrong) that Moses wasn't lying (although he was using it as an excuse); rather, his slowness of tongue was a result of being raised to speak Egyptian as his first language and Hebrew as his second language. Aaron was chosen by God to assist Moses with speaking to the Hebrews, not to Pharoah.

I totally understand your point, Tintin.

To be honest, I never watch movies or entertainment with supposedly Biblical "inspiration" for their actual accuracy. I always expect there to be gross faults and misinterpretations--some more heinous than others of course--partially because I don't believe anyone could bring such things "to life" (as far as a re-enactment) without some flaws, unless everything was done verbatim.

I have to admit that my own personal curiosity is always vested within the special effects (because a visual reference really makes me think about what these people went through--you can "imagine" frogs everywhere but to "SEE" it, for me at least, raises the sheer strength of God in my mind to a whole new level.)

I also appreciate the humanity such re-enactments force you to see that you otherwise wouldn't think about. I found the scene *SPOILER ALERT* where Pharoah's wife goes insane--continuously rocking an empty cradle because she can't accept that her son is dead--to be particularly haunting and unforgettable. Even though that isn't in the Bible, it really makes you think about the magnitude of not only the physical, but also, the psychological trauma these plagues were having on the people, which is something I find fascinating.

And when you saw the camera pan the bodies of the Egyptians in the water, all I could think of was, "God loved those Egyptians, too. And I'm sure He was sad that they never chose to accept Him..." I pictured all that water as a representation of tears that God must shed over all those who reject Him...

I completely understand your stance :) and as always, highly respect what you have to say.

Sorry. Just wanted to voice a few of the things that stood out to me regarding this movie as well. :)
