I know not curse words, but what's a curse word?

If I talk about heaven and hell, hell isn't a curse word. If I try to tell someone to knock it off, and use "the" plus that word between "it" and "off," is that a curse word?

I absolutely know this sounds like a childish question -- an how-far-can-I-push-Mommy question -- but a bunch of people are plucking my last nerve. If it is a curse word in that case too, can anyone give me something to say to catch the attention of people?

Honestly? I don't curse often, but I do when I'm trying to make a point and need people to listen. Because I don't curse often, those rare moments that I do seem to silence the room and get all faces looking at me. This isn't a room and I've not learn a way to do that same thing online yet, so if that word is out, I wouldn't mind help finding a new way to cause a momentary pause in objectionable (but within TOS on this site) behavior.

Totally a fair question. What I want to know is why the hell is this in the User2User Tech Support forum? :p

What exactly changes in the context is a matter of semantics. I don't really see it being a curse/swear word, but maybe there's something I'm missing as well.

Well...if you wish to not use curse words BUTget your point across...change colors...bold it...change size...exchange the curse word to a different word or better yet turn the table on them with a empathetic yet snort way. Such as the hole in your mouth tend to be spewing incorrectly today. Please rectify that so we can enjoy you again.

Seriously doing this on a cell phone is a pain.

More than one person and I tend to skip over color coding. lol

Not a lot of coding needed. Just click the color button. Or the same with using bold or italics. Or using a capital letter on certain words. At the end of the day the second or seconds longer it takes really isn't impacting your life in the slightest. Particularly in light of the fact that more often than not its during a debate when the person isn't listening anyways, no matter the word or emphasis used.

I very seldom even bother to read posts that are all colored-up as thought they were written by a pre-teen valley girl.

And, I fairly often use "hell" to make strong points in both my writing and my speech. ("No", it is not because I know no other words. My vocabulary is more extensive than 3/4 of the population... from my listening experience.)

Lol that's creative. I liked "What the fudge?" Fudge berries! Anything that has food in it is a good alternative lol. There was one I read somewhere: Shitake Mushrooms!! I mean, seriously. Rofl.

It's funny, but I DO have a problem with that modified "F" word. Many, many people at our church use it as a matter of course, and it does grate on me when I hear it. After all, it still means exactly what they claim it is replacing.

I don't say it at church. LOL! I usually just say it when I'm serious or mad and not on an ongoing casual basis. It helps me to avoid saying the other. It really bothers my wife when people say, "Oh my God!"

I had a health teacher back in high school that made a comment of when people use cuss words it really shows how uneducated they truly are because there are many other words that mean the exact same thing. Now, I agree with him to a point, but there are times where it does slip up. I have been known to say a few whoppers, but they are few and far between. In fact there is a huge difference of someone who curses like every other word out of their mouth is foul and I think that is where my teachers thought would come into action.

One of the things I appreciate about The Vineyard I attend, is that people don't seem to be any different when at church as they are anywhere else. The preacher even uses his normal "crap" and "screwed up", that he utters normally, from the pulpit. (But, I have to admit, it does sometimes give me a little pause)...... old habits of thinking there is church language and home language, die hard.

I guess, like a silly kid, I still have those ingrained teachings in my head that God can't hear you as well if you aren't in church... but in church... WATCH OUT! So you had better act twice as good when you enter those "sacred" doors.

I also say darn and heck, too :p I am generally pretty good at not cussing, actually I think its safe to say I never cuss at all :3

I once had a problem with cussin. Didn't like it, but couldn't stop it. Then one day I got tired enough to ask God for help with it. It turned off like a faucet.

I have found I can express myself much more eloquently without cussin. I have to think about what I'm saying. To me cussin seems to be a lazy way to express myself. Especially when that malfunctioning mess of misaligned microchips they call a grill at work starts acting up again. I can really exercise my vocabulary when I'm frustrated.
