Today many argue that Jesus died on a Wednesday or a Thursday etc. This post will show that Jesus did die on a Friday and raise on the Sunday according to the bible.
Mat 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
now take note that the day is the first day of the feast of unleavened bread. This is important because this is the time that Jesus takes the passover meal with His disciples. when is this?
Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
speaking of the Passover lamb it was to be eaten on the 14th day of the first month in the evening. now notice in the text they are preparing to eat the Passover so why do they call it the first day of unleavened bread?
Notice:
Exo 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
Exo 12:16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
notice that the day after the Passover was to be a Sabbath a holy day for them and 7 days of unleavened bread so again why do the disciples call the Passover the first day of Unleavened bread?
notice again:
Exo 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
notice that the unleavened bread started on the same day as the Passover on the 14th day and went to the 21st day which is 8 days all up. the first being the Passover and the nest 7 days continue to eat unleavened bread and a special Sabbath following the Passover or first of the 8 days.
so the Passover and the feast of unleavened bread are linked and in fact they begun eating unleavened bread on the same day of the Passover.
Now notice back with Jesus:
lets go to Luke for this because Luke gives us a orderly account as per his intro to the gospel.
Luk 22:7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
Luk 22:8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
Luk 22:9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
notice this preparation happens for the actual day of passover/unleavened bread. They are not preparing to have it before the day but on the day.
Luk 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Luk 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Luk 22:21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
Luk 22:22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
now notice Jesus has the last supper on the 14 th day of the first month we know this cause we were told it was the first day of unleavened bread. keep that in your mind.
so if you continue in this chapter Jesus goes after and prays while Judas gets the soldiers and of course that night Jesus is taken to the priest as it is written:
Luk 22:54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
Jesus is abused and questioned etc and then in the morning they take him to Pilate.
Luk 22:66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
Luk 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
Luk 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
Now an important piece of the puzzle is given here notice what information John gives us in line with this event:
Joh 18:28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
Notice that the priest did not want to defile themselves because they wanted to eat the passover. how can this be if Christ ate on the day of Passover and yet he did so the night before this?
well what time did they come and eat?
Luk 22:14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
What hour/time?
Mat 26:20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
It was at the evening which is the sunset time. Now this is important, The Jewish day went from sunset to sunset. So this evening was the beginning of a new day the 14 th of the month of abib Passover. but Jesus is eating on the right day but early because the normal time for eating it was the end of the day at the evening but as we will see Jesus was dead at that time.
Now the Passover lamb was killed between the two evenings.
Exo 12:6 and ye shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at even. The word translated even here actually means between the two evenings. This was in Jewish reckoning between noon and sunset. noon being when the sun began to set and the second evening when the sun sets. This means you simply go between them or in the middle. From 12 noon to sunset which generally was around 6. That would mean 3 or the 9th hour of the day.
This is important because as we will see Jesus dies at that exact hour.
Remember that Jesus has eaten the last supper early at the beginning of that day which was sunset. now he is with Pilate the morning after the last supper on the Passover which the priests were going to partake at the right time of day.
So Pilate questions Jesus and then tries to use a custom to free him:
Luk 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
Luk 23:17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
So Pilate offers to release Him but they ask for Christ to be crucified instead, when was this?
Joh 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Joh 19:15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Joh 19:16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
it is about the sixth hour or the first evening or noon/12. its preparation because the Passover will be sacrificed int eh temple in around 3 hours.
Luk 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
so they take him away to be crucified
Luk 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
notice Luke tells us that about the sixth hour darkness covered the earth, so this took place soon after Pilate let them take Him they put him on the cross and darkness covered the earth. notice it was until the ninth hour the very hour at 3 when the Passover would be sacrificed in the temple.
Luk 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
Luk 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Jesus dies at the very time the Passover lamb is being killed between the two evenings at the 9th hour the temple veil is torn showing that what it had pointed to had come as it is written:
1Co_5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Christ is the true pass over.
So what have we learned so far, Jesus has the last supper on the evening or beginning of the Passover feast the first of unleavened bread, he is taken that night after to the priests and abused and the next morning after some questioning He is taken to Pilate on the same day of Passover. (read other Gospels for all that happened that morning.) and by around noon it is decided that Jesus will be crucified and then He is and is on the cross for about 3 hours until he dies right at the time the Passover is being sacrificed in the temple.
now notice:
Luk 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
notice they get the body Jesus has died and they are taking him to the tomb and it is the preparation day both of the Passover but you will soon see also the 7th day Sabbath. they both are at the same time.
Remember Jesus has died at the 9th hour so there is only roughly 3 hours left till the Sabbath. Now remember the next day after Passover is the first Sabbath of unleavened bread.
Luk 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
The ladies have got themselves spices during this 3 hour period and have been to the tomb and are preparing them when they have to stop for the Sabbath.
Luk 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
notice it is now the first day of the week/Sunday and this is the day he has risen early in the morning before the sunrise.
So Luke's orderly account shows that Jesus has the last supper at sunset with his disciples and then is crucified the very next day. however in Jewish reckoning this was all done on the same day. then he is buried on that day and then the Sabbath comes along. then the very next day Sunday Christ rises.
how do I know that this is accurate? well the feasts tell us this. what many miss is this:
1Co_15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
Jesus Resurrection is the firstfruits, when did this take place?
Lev 23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover.
Lev 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.
take note the Passover then unleavened bread and then:
Lev 23:7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Lev 23:8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
remember the 15th is a Sabbath and then:
Lev 23:10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:
Lev 23:11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
notice it was to be done the morrow after the Sabbath in other words plainly put.
on the 14th day of the first month was Passover
on the 15th was Sabbath of unleavened bread
on the 16th was offering of first fruits.
We see Jesus followed this exact patter, Dies on the day of Passover and then the next day is the Sabbath and then the 1st day is the offering of firstfruits and Jesus did rise on that 1st day or the morrow after the Sabbath.
That is why John says:
Joh 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
It was a high day because the 7th day Sabbath of the commandment happened on the same day as the Sabbath of unleavened bread.
The argument that there had to be 3 literal days and nights in the grave can not fit this clear revelation. however it does fit Jewish reckoning. Jesus died on the Friday around 3 in the evening, this means that whole day is included from sunset Thur to sunset Fri, Then he was in the grave from sometime just before sunset Fri to some time between sunset sat and sunrise sun, which means Saturday and Sunday are included. I wont bother proving that from scripture you can study it. But stop trying to make it fit our modern western way of thinking.
The feast prove beyond a doubt connected with the Gospels that Jesus dies on Fir and rose the next Sun early.
Blessings.
