I know lots of people who are applying biblically based tweaks in their thinking and as result are enjoying better mental health. People who are quick to shove aside the fact that we are biological creatures and were purposely created that way are really questioning God and His wisdom for doing the things the way He has chosen to do them.
Who is questioning the bible ? I am questioning the Psychology nonsense that seems to deny in large part God or the need for God except to explain it as some kind of mental disorder.... I don't know anyone who has ever been helped by psychology ..do you?

I try not to get hung up on words but I look at the psychology of a person as the way they think, how they speak to themselves and those types of things. A person who is practicing biblical thinking with a biblical world view is endeavoring to think like God thinks. So...in that sense, I know lots of people who are helped by psychology. Examining your thoughts against the standard of Gods word is for lack of a better word...psychology. It is practicing good thinking...good thinking leads to peace.

What has Psychology ever cured...what good has it even done?
Has one drug addict ever been delivered by psychology? Has one sick person ever been healed?

It is obvious you haven't ever needed their assistance in dealing with life. I have gone to both a psychiatrist and a psychologist in my lifetime. I was severely depressed at the age of 40 and they did help me learn to cope with what I was dealing with am I cured? Probably not I am Blond after all and a woman two things working against me, but I am as normal as I am going to be and they did help.....

Mitspa, do Christians only go to Christian dentists to get a tooth pulled? -- or if someone is rushed to the ER and the only doctor on call is a Hindu, should the patient refuse treatment? -- what about the Veterinarian for your beloved sick pet, must they be a Christian Vet to help your pet? -- and how about your mechanic, must he or she be a Bible believer to fix your car properly?

Psychology is not "voodoo nonsense" -- there are people who's spirits and hearts have been broken so badly they can hardly function. Psychologists can help them mend by working through their traumatic issues. The Bible says in a multitude of counselors there is SAFETY! If not for the counselors I had through out my life, I would be in a sorry state. Most of them were Christians, but not all of them. And everyone of them helped me overcome many obstacles.

Some of my closest friends are Psychologists & Therapists. Honestly, I don't know how in the world you could possibly judge them to be ineffective. I'll bet 50% of the members on this site have been helped by psychologists.

Well I am not trying to kill myself anymore or hurt anybody else so you might want to be thankful that they helped me.

I'm thankful that they helped you, JesusLives 'cause now you're here with us. ♥

Just because society claims a word as it's own and then claims they are discovering something new under its umbrella doesn't mean that there isn't biblical truth in it. I'll give you an example. The word says, judge not lest you be judged yourself, for the same measure you use, it will be used against you. I think that verse is describing a person who is critical of others and as a result of that critical spirit, they are doubly critical of themselves.

I am very thankful for the help I got and thank God all the time for the extra 20 years I have had so far.... I would never have met tourist and had the wonderful year we have shared had I been successful with my suicide attempt at 40. Thankful there are people trained to help us who have a hard time in life dealing with it in general. Thankful God isn't done with me yet and that I can still be alive and praise Him and give Him all the glory for my changed life and heart. Those voodoo doctors helped me get where I am today probably under God's approval.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an excellent therapy, if it is used correctly. I know of several Christian psychologists who use this therapy. In addition, this is what we were taught to use in Biblical counseling, with the Bible as our foundation.

"It works to solve current problems and change unhelpful thinking and behavior.[SUP][1][/SUP] The name refers to behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and therapy based upon a combination of basic behavioral and cognitiveprinciples.[SUP][1][/SUP] Most therapists working with patients dealing with anxiety and depression use a blend of cognitive and behavioral therapy. This technique acknowledges that there may be behaviors that cannot be controlled through rational thought, but rather emerge based on prior conditioning from the environment and other external and/or internal stimuli. CBT is "problem focused" (undertaken for specific problems) and "action oriented" (therapist tries to assist the client in selecting specific strategies to help address those problems),[SUP][4][/SUP] or directive in its therapeutic approach. It is different from the more traditional, psychoanalytical approach, where therapists look for the unconscious meaning behind the behaviors and then diagnose the patient. Instead, behaviorists believe that disorders, such as depression, have to do with the relationship between a feared stimulus and an avoidance response, resulting in a conditioned fear, much like Ivan Pavlov. Cognitive therapists believed that conscious thoughts could influence a person’s behavior all its own. Ultimately, the two theories were combined to create what is now known as cognitive behavioral therapy."

It is well documented that intelligent people struggle more in relationships and mental health issues. I think we are just late bloomers. :)

Well your free to make-up whatever you want ... most folks who use the bible to judge others have a hardened conscience and don't judge themselves at all by the standards they judge others. So really its just the opposite in a biblical view.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Angela.
Have you ever seen REBT used with a Biblical model? I think I have some literature on that somewhere on my computer. I'll see if I can find it.

What's interesting to me mitspa..is that you can comment so vehemently about something you admittedly don't understand. Oh the irony.

I just did some googling of REBT from various viewpoints. One interesting thing was it talked about addressing people with some really rigid ideas like "God MUST heal me." Hmm! I sounds like this therapy might help a certain group of people who are actually suffering from some serious mental problems! LOL

Sure, if you have some links or info, send it to me!
