I believe it was punishment for David yes. The baby died because of his actions. You cannot reason Gods ways by the logical mind.

If we did we might as well be Muslims and criticise the bible for stating God told the Israelites to kill all the men, women and children in some places they captured. When the flood covered the earth babies would have died then, but God sent the flood
