Thanks Ive been struggling with my beliefs lately and most of your answers have been helpful. Ill leave it at this; I can only believe what I believe. Ive grown to not believe in a "Christian God" or a God that watches and judges me based on my actions and whether or not I believe that Jesus Christ was his son. I dont trust the word of people I did not know, that wrote things about stuff that happened a very long time ago. Heres my logic, if God created me to think how I think, and then I get punished for not believing in what "he" wants me to, then thats not a God that I want to worship anyway. Ill just continue to live my life trying to be the best person I can and hope that works out for the best.
You say you do not trust the word of others. Living your life to the best of your ability will not be enough to save you when your time is up. God gave us free will and this is why He made you with your own mind to make your own decisions. You are free to accept or reject Him, I urge you to choose the former. It is not for us to like the way God operates - He is the creator and King and what He says fits whether or not we like or agree with it.

You say you do not trust the words of others you do not know - wow that's a bold statement, we all do this every day! We are slaves to the opinions of others who have gone before us or we'd all be living basic lives with no advances in science or medicine.

You should read some good books and search the internet for the truth of the Bible and science - it aligns if you take the time to study deeper. I pray you seek the truth, God bless you.

As I understand it the idea that the earth is only 6000 years old was put forward by some bishop who based it on adding up the Generations of people in the Bible. He not only worked out the year he claimed he knew the Day and the Hour it was made.
and this is where a lot of the problems come from. these calculation would only give us the time starting with adam. we have no idea how much time went by from the formation of earth until the formation of adam.

The Bible is concerned with our Salvation. It is not supposed to be used as a Science text book. If it was we would be given details of the structure of Atoms, knowledge of Germs and diseases and a whole host of discoveries and inventions that took
hundreds of years to find out the hard way. Imagine all the lives that would have been saved if God had arranged for all the medical discoveries, including a cure for Cancer in the Bible. We would be a lot further ahead than we are. We might even had DVDs of Christ and his apostles preaching. That would have solved a lot od Doctrinal arguments.[/QUOTE]

those DVDs sound really cool!

God is the greatest scientist. He knows everything. He created the universe .

Science is the word we use to show how clever we are when we
discover something new about God's laws set in place, the way things
work, some new atom which God created etc.

God knows it all already, it's just us discovering more about our created universe.

For example eat one type of mushroom and it's tasty and fills us up.
Eat another type of mushroom and it's poisonous and we die, but learn how
to extract that poison and mix it with something else and we have a cure we
never had before.

That is God's creation obeying the laws he set in place, but we call it science.

The belief that the earth is only six thousand years old is ridiculous, and to try to calculate it based on the generations from Adam to us is pointless. The bible doesn't tell us the years between adam and throughout the rest of humanity in fact it doesn't even say how old Adam was when he was created and died. In fact I have heard it said Jesus died at age 33 but I have not seen this anywhere in scripture?

Hi Blain, Jesus was about 30 when he started his ministry.

Luke 3:23 AMP
[23] Jesus Himself, when He began His ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the Son,
as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Heli,

I also found the following on the Internet:

The gospel of Luke says that John the Baptist's ministry began during the fifteenth year of
Tiberius Caesar or A.D. 28. This would mean Jesus started His ministry after that
(see Luke 3:1, 21) or about A.D. 29 to 30.
The length of Jesus' ministry was at least three years and maybe as much as four
years. The gospel of John definitely tells us that at least three Passovers - three years - occurred
during Jesus ministry.

At the end of a ministry lasting a little more than three years, Jesus' ministry would have
ended about A.D. 33. He would have been 34 to 35 years old.

Jesus' Death.
We know that Jesus could have died only on A.D. 30 or A.D. 33 since the
gospels say that Jesus died on a Friday during the Passover. The Passover date is significant
because it could occur only during a lunar eclipse. The Jews selected Passover by the
lunar cycle. During the year of interest, lunar eclipses occurred only on a Friday
in A.D. 30 or A.D. 33. This means Jesus was 34 to 35 years of age when He died.

Ad? thought that ad stood for after death? how could jesus had died 30 years after his death?

LOL, A.D. is the an abbreviation for the Latin Words "Anno Domini", meaning in the year of the LORD.

Science is merely understanding our solid world around us.
Spirituality is understanding our divine nature.

God created science, astronomy, biology, etc...for all things testify of his handy work.

Apparentley the word science is derived from the latin word scientia which simply means knowledge. If you think about it what people have done through history is observe something and try to gain a better understanding of that something, how it works, what its purpose is etc and along the way they have developed the scientific apparatus to help them gain more knowledge in their field of research. Science and religion are not mutually exclusive, wikipedia states In logic and probability theory, two propositions (or events) are mutually exclusive or disjoint if they cannot both be true (occur).

There really is no great divide between religion and science (knowledge), but what you might find is some will try to change the meaning of what science is, imho.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:3

First let me say I'm a little skeptical about the OP. Her comments are in direct opposition to the screen name she gave herself.

Secondly, the whole how old is the Earth is completely irrelevant. We have no idea if it's 6000 or 6 billion yrs old.

If I were pushed to speculate I'd be inclined to lean closer to 6000. As for "scientific" proof that it is billions of yrs old, I'd ask the Bible-believing Christian how old do they think Adam appeared when he was created? an infant? 10 year old? or a fully grown adult man? I believe it's possible God created a new world that may appear to be billions of yrs old, but was created with a "built-in" age, similar to Adam. Not to mention how quickly the Earth must have appeared to age directly after the fall.

much like how many believers pick and choose which part of the bible to believe

I believe that it is a 24 hrs. Period for days as God has established the sun and moon and stars for times and seasons. Just what calender for years should be considered. Imo it is the Jewish calender.
