A better question is would Jesus ever say shet, dam, or the F word? I don't believe he would. Yet, most often I hear that F word tossed around like it's everyone's favorite word to say. So YES, Jesus disapproves of swearing and it IS a sin..

"Let no unclean thing come out of your mouth." That includes swear words. :)

I have to agree with blue_ladybug on this one. I even tell my kid not to say oh my gosh. I feel it is just a replacement for God in the phrase. I think the most important thing to realize is the intent of using the cuss word. Most the time it is out of anger or some sort of negative meaning. Then there are others who just use the words in their everyday speech. I was like this in the military. Everything was F this and F that. Now that I no longer curse like that I really am bothered when I hear it at work and when out and about with the family. I have had to ask people in restaurants to stop cursing so much in front of my kid.

It's not what goes into a man that defiles him but rather what comes out of a man

Mark 7:15

One way I approach those that cuss around me, as they tell me how they can not help their selves..I ask them "Have you been in a courtroom?" "Do you cuss there?" They tell me "No I do not cuss there!" I than tell them "You can control it than!"..I come from a whole family, where cussing was like their first tongue..and I stopped doing it, so than they stop!

Most of the people I commonly associate with incorporate profanity into just about every sentence they use. If I kindly ask them to refrain from doing so, they don't get it; they say that they're just words, so why does it bother me so much? I'm like...if it's just words, why are you so careful not to use them around small children or in certain settings, HUH?

Exactly!!!

sadly the house hold I live in everyone has a dirty mind and cusses a lot, I can't stand it but they don't see anything wrong with it even giving the excuse that cussing gives words flavor and you know since I am around them 24/7 it is a constant war to not allow their dirty and sexual jokes and filthy potty mouths to influence me but at the same time I am lucky because in all of this I am being trained to keep a pure mind and heart even in the presence of all kinds of filthy and honestly disgusting things from the heart and mouths of such people.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I think that it depends on the intent, which of course probably isn't good anyway. I mean, if my hand gets caught in a door or I step on a lego... something's coming out. It just is lol. But yeah, in usual, every day conversation, I would say that's probably frowned upon.

I've been there Blain, I know exactly what you mean!

Hi Anne!

Great post!:D

---Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what it helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may profit those who listen.--- Ephesians 4:29

I'm not perfect regarding this issue myself. :(
I think the last time I cussed was when my brothers wheelchair tipped over in our van (with him in it!). Very Very mad.
Not to mention terrified!:(
I did cuss at the wheelchair.:(
I do not condone my behavior, it was a sin.:(
I asked for forgiveness and I repent.:)

Usually I'm pretty good with this but not always that's for sure.

I can only stand by the Grace of God.;)
Blessings!

People who use bad words with reckless abandon lack creativity and vocabulary.....it really just shows a persons ignorance imo.

I agree.

If you use bad words without proper grammar and articulation.. it shows a lack of creativity.

I thought we were talking about speech vs writing...Lol....my bad. I'm not sure what I did besides miss a comma....was that it...I'm confused.

I think it is a sin...God wants us to be a light in the darkness. By using cuss words, we're just dimming our light and becoming like the rest of the world. :(
I know it's hard but praying about it helps. Just ask Jesus to help you avoid those words. Tell him you want to use Godly words that are positive and bring life to yourself and others. :)

Hi everyone.

I assume you are referring to swearing - this is how we would describe it in the
UK.

There is power in words we can speak both blessing and curses over a person.
Some swearing is literally cursing someone whether we realise it or not. It doesn't
even have to be a swear word it can be saying something like "I wish you were dead"
which I have some people say in anger etc.

Its also interesting to look back and see the origin of some words. Here in this
neck of the woods people say "blimey" the origin of that is "Lord blind me!"
Would a person really want to speak that other themselves!

Then there is the profanities and taking God's name in vane - strange how even
people who don't believe in God do that.

Most swear words said to others are intended to shock or put a person down, show
disrespect etc. I don't think God does approve of such language.

It is awful to hear as well.

Nowadays people also think it means good sense of humour :p
but you are right it does mean God.
