What I don't understand is why people are so content with mainstream Christianity...why aren't people looking for more?
most people want 'more'...

but you get -more- by walking daily with jesus and hearing God speak to us in his word...not by constantly running to the next church or teacher or doctrine that promises you 'more'...

Colossians 2:13-18 I think this verse gets taken out of context A LOT because there arfe dozens and dozens and dozens of verses about why we need to keep the sabbath and the ten commandments. Here are just a few:

1 John 2:3-6
Acts: 17:2-3
Pslam 103: 13-18
Revelation 14:12
Revelation 12:17
1 John 3:21-24
Hebrews 4:9-11
Romans 13:8-10
I think this is pointing that the ten commandments show us HOW to love our neighbor so we do still need to follow them because they are the deffinition of love. Does that make sense?
John 15:10
Hosea 4:6
Isaiah 29:13-14

There is more but I don't feel like typing the whole list. So with all these verses in support of the ten commandments (which is not the mosaic law) and like two or three verses that could be interperted to say "you don't have to keep the ten commandments" does it really make sense for those verses to be interpreted that way?
"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it." That verse was not said to improve our efforts in trying but in understanding we cannot get to God in that way. We only start the growing in obedience after the free gift, never for it. And you will never see God wearing the campaign button:: "Well the humans are better than they were at least."

What would we need to get more out of in Mainstream Christianity than Jesus Christ and the principles surrounding Him? If it is He Himself we are to follow and our growth and challenges come from Him in our daily walk thru His Spirit, how is this not enough in the mainstream Christian beliefs in His Word? I know it is definitely challenging so I am sure you don't mean that...

The Ten Commandments are Holy. But they were never to show us how we were to do anything. They were shown to show us what we couldn't do in ourselves, but what God will in us. We need to cling to the one that has changed us in our New Creation, from regeneration on...as He grows us up in Him.

This is from a commentary I use sometimes

1 John 2:3
Religion has so ground into our heads the lie that right standing with God is earned by our actions, scriptures like this are almost always interpreted as the opposite of what they are really saying. This verse is not saying that keeping God’s commandments causes us to know Him; it’s saying the exact opposite. Knowing God (not just intellectually but experientially) will cause us to keep His commandments. This is how we know if we are truly born of God (see my note at 1 John 3:10). If our actions aren’t affected, then we don’t have a genuine relationship with the Lord.

Andrew Wommack's Living Commentary.

Amen., I use AW commentary sometimes too and he has a good understanding of grace. Good reference.

Hey JFsurvivor., A good thing to remember about the law is; The law is right but it has NO POWER to make anyone righteous.
The Law is good, but it has NO POWER to make anyone good. JESUS is WHO we need to make us righteous and holy and set apart acceptable to God.,not what we can do but what Jesus ALREADY did for us. We cannot improve on Him. ;)

So I found some stuff out and I am soooo happy! Here is what I found:

And that has links to a bunch of other cool places. :) you should totally check it out!
I have totally checked their websites and found definite evidence that they are some off shoot of the Seventh Day Adventists but worse. They dont believe in the Trinity as opposed to the main stream established version. Both have cultic roots and my advice is to steer clear of itthem because you will find yourself in bondage to legalism. If you want a lively church with a young congregation I am sure there are some in your area that follow correct teachings.

Seventh day adventists do not hold to the biblical line that a person can consider one day more holy than another or treat every day alike under the new covenant( rom14:5) They insist you must hold to a saturday sabbath. Plus you should avoid the levitical unclean foods which again contradicts Paul in rom14. It is the individuals choice.

I agree completly. However when you love someone you want to show them you love them. That is where the ten commandments come in. It's like telling God we love him by following them. Also they can act as guiderails. Because without them things can sometimes get confusing.

What if you are in a situation where you broke something and you know you will get in trouble if your mom finds out? You could easily lie but the ten commandments say not to lie. So you are presented with a choice of lie or don't lie. If you choose to lie that means you are choosing to sin and that is bad. But if you choose to not lie that is really good. It doesn't make you rightious or earn you any brownie points with God but you know you did the right thing in that instance. I repeat, this action does not save you from the fire of hell but it shows God you are trying. It shows your heart. Not only that but it shows other people your heart as well. By being obedient to God it can't keep you in line all day every day but it can keep your heart in the right place.

Also if lying is wrong and it is part of the Ten commandments, and it was wrong in the old testament and is still wronf today, along with all the other commandments what makes the sabbath any different? If the old covenant was done away with, we should be free to worship other gods and to lie, murder and do whatever because we are "covered by grace".

No one is saying we don't use the Ten Commandments as a guide line. But if someone is truly saved they will know that lawlessness is evil. The OT people didn't have the HS like we do today. I can tell you that people who continually lie and continually murder are not true Christians. The ten commandments didn't keep the Jews from sinning, so what makes you think it will keep us from sinning? Our relationship with the Lord and our walk daily with him will change us to where we steer clear of our old selves and make things new through and with Christ.

How would you explain Jesus healing on a Sabbath?

Lord, please lift up the veil that covers the eye of whoever is reading this and let Your revelation flow.

I'm not looking for a religious organization per-say. I am looking for fellowship or just people. ANYONE! Because I had a PTSD episode I was ostrasiced from a campus group and these mainstream "Christians" just stopped talking to me. They were supposed to be my friends. They outright lied to me. So then I found the other "mother god" church and it looked really nice at first and they made some really good points but then when they started talking about "mother god" I was like "hmm..maybe not" so I'm not gonna go with that one so I am churchless AGAIN! Idc about the building but I do care that I am being taught sound biblical truth. I have come to the conclusion that the sabbath MUST be kept and that the sabbath is on a Saturday but most churches keep it on Sunday and that's no good. I'm just tired of the lies and the people not caring. I want the real thing. Plus the Bible can be misiterpreted a million different ways and can be used for good or for evil. Satan is so dangerous because he knows the Bible so well. So all I want is to have the pure unfiltered truth. Mainstream Christianity can't give that to me. Part of this may be because I am hurt but maybe it's a good thing because it is pushing me to find something better. My boyfriend sent me a link about what to do if you can't find a church. It said to remain as I am, do my own thing and whenever I encounter another Christian, offer to do a Bible study with them and see what I can learn or maybe I could teach them something. So yeah I am looking for people and stuff but overall I just want truth. And while the Bible is truth, satan perverts it and we can't always understand the Bible for one reason or another so I want to understand it. Look at how many denominations there are. A lot of them use the SAME Bible but interpret it different! So how can we be surem ours is the right interpretation unless we do some digging?

Why were you ostracized from the campus group?

I've been trying to avoid these threads as clearly the help that we offer isn't welcome. I was listening to a sermon today and it hit me that, subtle things, even good things, the devil uses to steal (in this case, our time). I guess this will be all from me.

If you're serious about this, JF, you can even watch one of Charles Stanley's sermons, theres a lot that help old and new believers alike. There are SO many answers and resources, but clearly nothing satisfies you right now. And the help that we offer, which wasn't unsolicited, doesn't seem to be producing any results as much as it would be if given to someone who really needs it.

If help to be closer to God was what you wanted and if you really wanted it like your life depended on it, chances are, rather than trying to get us to follow the 10 commandments, by starting discussions to prove that that's how christians should live, you'd be somewhere else getting to know more about Jesus, you wouldn't even have time for other stuff. It kind of hurts, that you belittle this "mainstream christianity" when you have no idea what it really means to most of us (these so called mainstream christians have led me and so many others back to Christ). I guess I am shaking the dust off my feet. I pray you find out exactly what you need.

Well you ask for forgiveness of course and then don't break it again...or do you best not to and if you keep breaking it, it better be on accident and not on purpose. If you keep breaking it on accident keep asking for forgiveness and then go get some spiritual counsel or do some serious soul seraching so you can fix the problem. Make sense? I know we will never reach perfection but we should all strive to be the best we can be. Its a matter of where your heart is. If you are constantly trying to please God, he's not going to see that as "oh you're throwing my sons sacrifice away!" I think he would see it as "wow! they really love me and aren't taking my sons sacrifice for granted."

Can I ask you? If you want to look to the literal letter of the law, does this include Christ's literal commandments? Are they as important as OT law? If they are, how do you find obeying those literal commands in the beatitudes, and the rest of Christ's teachings?

IE

Don't invite friends and family home for a meal but rather the lame, blind, poor, beggars so you may receive your reward in Heaven.
If you fast make sure no one knows you fast or accept you are a hypocrite.

If anyone steals anything of yours, give them more besides with nothing but love in your heart for them

Don't short change yourself.

It is not enough just to not commit adultery. If you as much as look at another with lust in your eye you have already committed adultery with them in your heart.

It is not enough just to say you do not murder, if you get angry with your brother or sister you are subject to judgement.

You could perfectly obey the ten commandments(if that were possible) and still be cast into hell. For there is nothing in them about forgiving others. But Jesus said, if you do not forgive your brother your father in Heaven will not forgive you.

The yardstick is NOT the Ten Commandments. Try and follow the literal letter of Christ's teachings in the beatitudes. If you do, you will soon look away from the literal letter and to Christ-if you are sincere

Lord, please lift up the veil that covers the eye of whoever is reading this and let Your revelation flow.
Because the pharasees (from what I understand) would put their rest on the sabbath as priority over someone coming to their door begging for help. It was a matter of the heart. Look at who God is, do you REALLY think he wouldn't be ok with someone helping the poor on the sabbath? So the sabbath should still be kept but if someone needs help then don't turn them away because it's the sabbath and you MUST rest OR ELSE! I think somewhere in the Bible it says that when you help others you are really helping Jesus. So why not do good on the sabbath? I think what God meant by work was anything that was...earthly...that's how I understand it anyway...like for me, I take a break from homework on Saturdays but if someone needs help I'll help them. The sabbath may look different for everyone. For some people they might request off at their work and go to the gym, for others it may be a day to have family Bible study and game day, for others it may look like a day of cleaning (sometimes cleaning is relaxing to people. it is for my mom). Do you see the point? It's a break from the stress on Saturday to do whatever as long as it praises God and as long as it's not going to put any unecissary stress on you. That is my personal understanding anyway.
