You are both right.

Note it says "works" in conjunction to "first love"

First love is heaven infused
Love is not
I don't see love mentioned at all in the Ephesians' works. A lot of religious activity without seeing GOD walking in their midst, perhaps?

It is hard to say what they were thinking but whatever it was..it was enough to set Paul this one particular man off to "deliver him over to satan" for the destruction of his flesh.

It had for sure something to do with their boasting and arrogance towards this particular deed done. I wonder what the guys going to the temple prostitutes for sex were thinking when they were doing that?....or for that matter the rest of the Corinthians that were doing some crazy things like getting drunk at communion, eating all the food at their feasts before the poor people could get there...back-biting each other..etc.

I think people that think because they are saved....that there will be no consequences for sin done in their flesh are deluding themselves. Grace doesn't free you TO sin...it frees you FROM sin!

The interesting thing is that later on when Paul is talking about the mystery of the resurrection in 1 Corth 15:50-52...he says that we "all" shall be changed..in a moment..in a twinkling of an eye..

In context Paul was talking to all the saints there at Corinth so he was referring to all them at the church in Christ. So, all these people that were doing all these other things mentioned ....these were gong to be changed too.

Now, I have no doubt that these Corinthians were continually being told all the time about their true identity in Christ and that they let the grace of Christ "teach" them to live godly. ...I am sure the thought of being "delivered over to satan for the destruction of the flesh " had a "sobering effect " on them.

In other words..they didn't keep on doing those bad things. I'm sure they grew out of them once they caught ahold of who they were in Christ now. The true gospel of the grace of Christ teaches us to live godly in this present world.

i get the impression that they were so focused on the grace they received that they not only neglected to respond to God by seeking righteousness, they may have actually been boasting about how they could go on sinning, maybe using this man as an example of how free they were and how freely grace was given. which is of course, wrong of them.

this isn't to say that this means they were all without grace or without salvation - just mislead and not having the right understanding. because, here in the same context and on the same subject, Paul says to them ..

Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch -
- as you really are.
For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

(1 Corinthians 5:7)

.. that they really are unleavened -- and that not because of outwardly displaying that 'unleavened-ness' (which, they weren't!) but because of Christ's sacrifice.
the gist here i think is the same thing we see in the rest of Paul's writing, and John's, and Peter's -- that our righteousness has been declared and is because of Christ; it is His righteousness that we are clothed with, so we should therefore act in a way worthy of what we have already been declared to be.
see, if their misdeeds and their bad understanding is what their righteousness hinged on, i don't think Paul would have told them that they "really are" unleavened; the reason to purge out the leaven is not in order to become unleavened, but because that leaven has no place with us, because it is not in keeping with who we are in Christ. so here i am again, trusting that i am saved regardless of my works, because of my faith, and that because of that i should strive for righteousness & put away sin. faith and repentance are hand-in-hand, but one should produce the other, and the other doesn't necessarily produce or even require the one.

We know that we have passed over from death to life because we love the brothers. The one who does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that every murderer does not have eternal life residing in him. We have come to know love by this: that he laid down his life on behalf of us, and we ought to lay down our lives on behalf of the brothers. But whoever has the world’s material possessions and observes his brother in need and shuts his heart against him, how does the love of God reside in him? 1 John 3:14-17

What [is] the benefit, my brothers, if someone says [that he] has faith but does not have works? That faith [is] not able to save him. If a brother or a sister is poorly clothed and lacking food for the day, and one of you should say to them, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,” but does not give them what is necessary for the body, what [is] the benefit? Thus also faith, if it does not have works, by itself is dead. James 2:14-17

I don't know what Kenneth believes now, but I do believe in the past he has used the term Gods Moral Law to refer to the 10 commandments. He can correct me if I am wrong.
I have never seen Gods Moral Law defined in the bible.

Seems like a made up thing to me.

The question comes to my mind: how can we be in the light AS he is in the light? Col 1:10
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
If we have been reborn then we are members of the body and the body Is of CHRIST,so then If we walk In the light(saved) as he Is In the light we have fellowship with each other and the blood of JESUS cleanses us from all sin.

But believers who don't walk in the spirit, walk according to the flesh, and are not walking in the light, even though their new man is in the light.

This goes down to the understanding who they are in Christ. They still equate with the old men. That's why Paul tells believers several times they are not the old, but the new.

Remember Paul says that of every spiritual gifting he desires that they would prophesy. This is seeing people according to God's grace. And encouraging and building them up into who they really are.

Actually Paul said that we are both (two minds), and that we must operate from the spiritual mind through the power (ability) of the holy spirit .

Our "two minds" is called an unrenewed mind. Renewed mind is to who they are in Christ.

To the Church of Ephesus Paul writes the following in regards to their conduct...

First he addresses the unbelievers:

19They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

Then he addresses the believers in light of the Gentiles behavior:

20But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,

He stresses that if you really a believer, you were taught the truth in Jesus. What is that?

22to put off your old self,[SUP]f[/SUP] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

Notice Paul is stressing their old self is the former manner of life and is now corrupt through old desires. We "put it off". How do we put it off?

23
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

Being renewed in our minds. What he calls the "spirit" or "attitude". How we see ourselves...

24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

After putting off the old. We put on the new man. And this new man is created like God in righteousness and holiness. And anything that says differently to this is a "falsehood":

25Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Falsehood here is "lies". We put these things away. And we speak truth with his neighbor. This truth is exactly what he has just explained you are not the old neighbor, you are the new! You're a person of love and because you're a person of love, you do loving works. Or do you not believe God is love? Etc, etc.

That is the essence of prophesy. And why Paul said he desired we would all prophesy.

Thats right. Its contrasting the children of the light, the believers, with the children of the dark, the lost.

"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" Ephesians 5:8
YES.
There Is now no condemnation to those In CHRIST.

Walk In the light (saved)
If you are a believer then you are saved.
It can't mean what you say because believers can hate their brother, which John said is not walking in the light. The new man still abides in the light even when a believer follows his old man and walks in darkness.

It's simple..if you hate your brother..you do not have eternal life in you..you are not in Christ...you are NOT in the light nor even walking as a child of the light.

If you hate your brother you are not a true Christian ..you do not have eternal life in you....you can repent and come to Christ..that will fix all that hate...

1 John 3:14-15 (NASB)

[SUP]15 [/SUP] Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Sounds like you're hanging with the wrong crowd. Probably a bunch of gnostic posers. Hateful bunch they are.

There you go again spinning the plain meaning of scripture to make it say something it doesn't. Why can't you be more like HeRose and just accept the plain meaning.....

The ledge you are walking on keeps getting narrower and narrower. That's just completely unscriptural.

All who have been baptized into Christ are in Christ. They are members of the new covenant and the body of Christ. They have been circumcised in the heart and have been given a new spirit that dwells in the light. Those are just facts.

An act of hatred towards a brother doesn't change any of those facts, but it is walking in darkness.

You say that one can repent and come to Christ, and that will fix all that hate. But what happens when that brother hates again? Don't you see how you're painting yourself into a corner?
