I recently finished watching the Netflix documentary series, Making a Murderer, that's been getting a lot of attention lately.

Anyone else been watching? Thoughts?

For me, I would rather err on the side of letting criminals walk free than putting innocent people in jail if presented with reasonable doubt. I've never been called to serve on a jury (i might be one of the few folks who hopes she gets called), but I've just been wondering what it was that resolved the doubts presented in these cases against Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey.

Don't know why this is in the singles forum, and I have not watched it yet but heard a little talk on it.


Innocent people being put behind bars is more common then the media lets put out, as there is at least one or two cases every other year now where a person has been released because new evidence has come out that showed they were innocent after all.

I even saw one just last year where the man had been locked up for 15 years and then released do to evidence coming forward proving he was innocent.....

I found this as I was doing research on lie detector results because the man failed the lie detector which is what got him sentenced not the available (or lack of ) evidence.

What I found was astonishing as I saw that lie detector's are not 98 to 99 percent accurate as they portray, and that there are many variables that can mess with the results. Also they take and consider a "undetermined" (inconclusive) result as a fail, but undetermined means something happened that made the result not say either way of a truth or lie being told.

also, I had hoped someone else here had watched it, there's so many angles to it, and I've enjoyed a lot of offline discussion on the whole story.

Because this should be in more under the miscellaneous category then singles, because the topic has nothing to do with being a single Christian.

There is a few people who do not even come in and post on the singles board because they are not single, and thus even though may have seen this Netflix show will not comment.

I for one usually stay out of the singles forum's unless something catches my attention, and since I have done prison ministry and have done research on some of the topic's at hand felt the need to speak.

The whole context of saying what I said was on the basis that you/she would get more responses if placed in another category !!! Not to be demeaning...............

I can understand what you mean by generating more traffic in other parts of the forum, but many of us singles post about subjects that are on our mind, as we don't have a spouse to talk to. I also don't have the time to check out all the other forums as much, so I primarily stick with Singles.

Many of my threads might not be considered part of the "Singles" genre per se either, but I know my own reasoning is, "I'm single. I'm thinking about this. I'm going to see what other singles here think, too." The singles community is also often filled with people who know each other, so it can be like a familiar group of friends talking. We have kind of a "coffee house" vibe here--"Come on in, tell us what's on your mind."

(Hellooo, I'm sorry to derail--just thought I'd address the question as to why we post supposedly "non-single" issues in singles... I haven't seen the documentary so I'm sorry that I can't comment on the actual topic.)

No worries!

The gist of the story is that Steven Avery was exonerated for a rape he didn't commit after serving 18 years in prison, but after he's out, he gets convicted of the rape and murder of a different woman. His nephew, Brendan Dassey, is also convicted of raping and murdering this other woman. Both currently serving time in prison. What makes the story so compelling is a lot of inconsistencies, what appears to be tampering of the evidence, that Brendan (who has intellectual and learning disabilities) gave a coerced confession on video, and following the reactions the families and community.

I remember thinking a few years that I agreed with the jury in the Casey Anthony case, because the doubts that had been presented hadn't fully been resolved to me...even if she probably killed her daughter, we still presume innocence first, right? I mean, I sure wouldn't go out for drinks with Bill Cosby, but that inherent presumption applies even to him.

Side note
I developed a total schoolgirl crush on Dean Strang, one of Avery's defense lawyers, during the course of watching the doc. He just comes across as a modern day Atticus Finch...
