I see some good ideas here!

I am actually planning on doing our large bedroom this year, and my choice is grey---one of those lovely mid-tone greys that are more like a taupe--with a bit more brown or red in it as the undertone. White for the trim, and the floor, as it is a nicely preserved plank floor, will be painted in white. It does need an accent colour, but for me, teal is too heavy, although I have seen it done and it is lovely, I think I would be aggravated by it over time. A nice soft butter yellow or even a lovely hit of fuchsia here and there would be great, and it could even be concentrated in a large area rug. Using lots of white, also as accessories, and lamps, etc. are what I see in my mind's eye.
Just some food for thought!
Thanks for the ideas! I think thats my problem, finding the perfect grey. I promised my hubby I wouldn't ever do our room too feminine with pinks and frills. It always annoyed me when I went to a house and the woman has it filled with frills and pinks and crafts everywhere. You're a couple, you should both like what you see. We choose things for the house together we both like.I think I need a real nice grey. Theres too many choices for colors though :(

I agree with you!

Grey can be quite handsome, but it can be dark and empty, and too pale and cold. It's the undertones, the formula of tints that go into the shade that makes all the difference.

Perhaps going to a paint store that has a decorator on staff---we have Benjamin Moore, here---may be just the ticket!

My rule of thumb: think of your bedroom as a photo shoot. If you have a light foreground, you need a darker background, and vice versa. Otherwise it all blends in and you can't see it real well. If you do teal for the walls, do a light greyish silver color for the trim. :)

I Used a color called partridge grey. Then I used a much darker grey for an accent wall. I actually like my kitchen best because I did the walls in partridge grey and taupe broad stripes :) It is a masterpiece ! Opps. Am I bragging. haha There is alot of sun in the kitchen . I think its perfect with all the white. Its best to paint a strip on the wall and look at it in all kinds of light. I have a background in design so if you have any questions just shoot! Id suggest you get a color wheel if you dont have one.

Ok,I need to get out of the news forum and get calm.lol So here is my dilemma, and I know some of you are great decorators and can give me some advice. Here's my issue.I have every room in my house painted, and settled on colors.Everyone says its looks so cozy. But the only room I have left to do is the most important, our bedroom. For some reason I cant make a decision on it. :( Its annoying me because I want a nice place to sleep but I cant seem to pick a wall color.Im liking grey, but I dont want it to look like prison walls. Grey and teal is in the bedspread and I really like those colors together. But I went to look at colors in the store I got overwhelmed. Any ideas you decorators out there?
I can decorate, not because I'm a natural, but because Mom and my grandmother were and pushed me to learn what doesn't come natural.

First thing -- "our bedroom." Implies a man and woman's bedroom, so don't go all girly on him. He has to live there too. (I'm assuming you wouldn't go all manly with it.) Try and go with something you both like, minus frills, lace, and typically girly decorative choices.

Gray and teal? How much do you love the bedspread? Love it enough to want to keep it all year long for five or more years? In that case, pick a style color for teal. (Gray is not a color as much as it is a shade of black. lol) Here's color wheel for teal. Pick one of the four styles it talks about, and then pick within that color. (It can vary lightly from the basic colors, just not too much.)

(If you don't love it that much, find one you do love.)

Also might want to use those colors for your window treatment, and if you're the type of person who has covering for your wood surfaces (on top of your chest of drawers or end tables, for instance. You can go rugs too, but then you're doing a complete redecorate that costs a pretty penny.)

Also, make the wall decorations something personal and sentimental for each of you. There are man caves and woman's work rooms, but the bedroom is a couple's cave -- a very special place to retreat to where only te two of you can go. Always aim for "this is our inner sanctuary" for both of you.

(My grandmother was an interior designer, so she and Mom talked about this kind of stuff often. And then did it often.)

Incorrect!

Actually,
Grey
is an intermediate color between black and white. It is a neutral or achromatic color.
Actually, I studied color theory in art school... gray is technically a tint of white, and black is the absence of color. :) If you're talking about actual paint though, one can add white to black paint to create a "shade" of black.

This helps immensely. :) There is more grey than teal in the blanket, so you definitely want more teal color on the walls. And do a lighter shade of grey than what is on the blanket..

This is easy to answer!!! I have SHERMAN WILLIAMS Restful SW6458 - its a green/grey and looks awesome with my teal and gray bedding! HAHAHA and your bedding is the exact one I use for my guests when they come! It's still to girly for me, however I let the guest sleep in my giant bed and I want them to feel comfy and peaceful with the bedding.

I know if you take it to Lowes they can put it in the computer and get a color match.Maybe a pillow case will do it. Thanks for all the advice ladies! I think I have an idea now of what I want. :)

I am an artist/muralist. I Find that softer tones of colors are perfect for bedrooms, and even having one focal wall a different, stronger color is great, but the entire room having a loud overly dramatic color? No! A very soft gray would work for you if you used other pastel colors in the accessories to compliment the room.

Silver! Silver is not gray, not girly, and not manly. lol Silver is that color that separates the pattern from the background on the spread. (You don't want to paint the whole room silver or you'll feel like you're living inside a silver jewelry case, but it would be good for accenting -- a little in the window treatment, maybe silver picture frames, definitely a mirror, and/or, if you happen to have a set of silver antique grooming set -- hair brush, comb, nail buffer from your great grandmother or grandmother -- it's okay to put that on the dresser, since it's girly, but silver is also a manly color.)

I can't see what color that is from the picture, but a great choice is that brown/orange/warm color mixed in with the turquoise and gray. I tend to go with the just-a-little-bits part of a larger pattern for my colors. Like I have a blouse that if a man described it, he'd say it's green and turquoise. He wouldn't notice the small patches of brown in it at all, but, (back when I could wear normal clothes), I liked to wear pants that matched that brown to make the shirt pop. It's like putting lace on a dark wooden surface. In this case, the lace is all of that bedspread, but that small amount of warm color I see, and then that warm color becomes the base for the whole room. (I think that's why white doilies were so common on good furniture. It made folks notice the intricacy of the doily and the expensive furniture under it.) Somehow it works to really show off the turquoise, silver and gray more, but your room will feel warm and cozy with a twist of regal in the bedspread. Since the master bedroom is supposed to be a peaceful inner sanctuary, warm colors on the walls give it that feeling the most. The bedspread adds an air of refinement to warm and peaceful.

Added bonus, the wall colors will help you pick a completely different comforter the next time. I love every comforter I've ever bought, but when it's time for a new one, I always look for something completely different to start anew. Truthfully, I'm in that mood now. (Gee. I wonder why? lol) If I could do it now, I'd get THAT bed spread. I do love it, but the one I have now is cream with small purple and rose flowers and green borders, so that is also as opposite of what I have now, that it would get me rethinking the accents again. lol

(Yeesh. I sound like half the guys on those DYI home decoration shows. Too bad Gram can't see this. I was the girl who did think there's nothing wrong with a bright orange sweatshirt, green vest, and a blue and red plaid trousers. lol)

Exactly. I used grey with cream for my bedroom. Its soft and relaxing. Actually my whole house is shades of grey and cream with my accent colors being in the accessories. That way I can and do change them when the mood strikes me:)
