Actually, I studied color theory in art school... gray is technically a tint of white, and black is the absence of color. :) If you're talking about actual paint though, one can add white to black paint to create a "shade" of black.
lol.... ok. My focus is just that grey is a neutral shade. It is neutral along with shades of white.

I would take a bit of a different approach if I was styling a room around that comforter. i would keep everything else in the room completely neutral since the comforter has plenty of color and pattern on its own...white or gray for the walls, white trim, floor length white curtains, and a jute area rug.

My own dwelling is a little apartment, and I like to keep it simple, everything is either white or gray and then I have random bursts of color.
For example, my bedroom I have my grey reading chair, a grey/white area rug beneath my bed, and my sheets and blanket are all white with grey/white striped pillows, then my headboard is a vibrant teal.
I love jewel tones, but also drawn to simplicity and clean lines so the areas of color around my home are few and deliberate...the headboard (teal), my piano (purple), my shower curtain (white, gray, teal, golden yellow), and a beautiful canvas painting I found while antiquing that pulls everything together, hanging over my desk.

Also, I don't know why I can't settle on grey or gray, spelling wise. Sometimes one just feels better.

Exactly. I used grey with cream for my bedroom. Its soft and relaxing. Actually my whole house is shades of grey and cream with my accent colors being in the accessories. That way I can and do change them when the mood strikes me:)
Heres one of the lvgrm. I used various shades of grey, cream, white and Im on a green kick right now for my accent color. Disregard the chaise in the corner I disassembled to reupholster.

I am an artist/muralist. I Find that softer tones of colors are perfect for bedrooms, and even having one focal wall a different, stronger color is great, but the entire room having a loud overly dramatic color? No! A very soft gray would work for you if you used other pastel colors in the accessories to compliment the room.
Good advice. I also am an artist and used to have my own business as a muralist!

Yes,I have green in the accent color along with the teal. I like your use of colors and the stripes too. Or course I don't know how much white I can use since I have a dog. She' a pretty clean dog but she's a little redneck sometimes and likes to roll in the grass and dirt. lol I do like your ideas though! My brain is starting to cook.lol
