It looks like maybe it is a translation problem? Here is the verse in the KJV and it was David's brother, Elhanan, who slew Goliath's brother at another battle at Gob. No worries, whenever there is something that doesn't make sense to me I then know I just need to research into it more.

King James Bible
And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

The NASB, ESV and many others have Elhanan killing Goliath in that passage. Sure could be confusing when you're searching for truth.

Where are you getting your misinformation? Of course there have been some deliberately changed writings calling themselves bibles, but those are so obvious...

Why do you attempt to lead others down the deceitful trail of bogus versions which are known to all? Discredited is discredited, but almost all versions of the Word are just fine for anyone who is saved to read.

Please do not drage in the discredited, and please do not give any one version more credit than another because I can guarantee you there are errors in each, errors that do not change the message of Jesus Christ. Do not attempt to confuse brethren who may be weak in th efaith.

Yes the NAS, ESV, HCSB, and a couple other version omit the "brother of" part in their translations !!!

This may help, also. https://www.jesus-is-lord.com/goliath2.htm

Even with KJV it can be necessary to search the Hebrew/Greek as there are some translational difficulties such as words in Greek/Hebrew that English has no translation for so the translators went with what is closest. Anyone who has studies a different language from their own has surely seen these challenges.

Yes, the point is, can I trust what I'm reading or do I need to go to other sources. That makes me the final authority on what God has said. "I'll choose what I think is right after I read the various sources."

Is it true to say the bible points to the truth it does not define it?

Let me illustrate. Jesus says the Kingdom of God is within, inside us, who we are. Or the Kingdom of God is with the corporate gathering of believers. Both are true. With the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we are part of the Kingdom of heaven on earth, the word of God in our hearts. Equally when we meet Jesus is there. Now the deeper question is what is the expression of that kingdom? Miracles, healing, prophecy?

So the book by its self is meaningless unless it speaks to the reality in the believers lives. So there is an interplay between the two, like a relationship. So I would say use everything you can and realise often each insight is only part of a greater whole, and often not exclusively "right."

I have come to learn those of often use the term absolute, are often absolutely wrong, because just one failure in absolute and it all falls apart. Take a simple moral term, do not murder as do not kill. But you kill in war, you kill in punishment for justice. This creates a fuzziness which we have to live with, to make sense of life.

You can guarantee errors, but you can't produce errors. Man has tried for centuries to no avail. The KJV has passes the test every time. Man hates to hear that, because man does not want to submit to the book. Man wants to have control over what God has said.

Actually the Holy Spirit is the final authority, not us, because the Holy Spirit will only lead believers in the Truth !!!

Should you look at other versions for understanding ???

I would say no you don't have to for understanding, but in order to debate with others on the topic it is best to look at the sources they use to see where they are coming from. Else wise you will be debating from a stance of what you have heard through the grape vine that might not be true !!!

I know a lot of people, even some on here, like using the NASB.

I myself stay away from that version because I have seen a few scriptures in the NT that the wording had been changed to where it changes the actual context of what was being said !!!

Tell me, what truth would I be missing if I only use the KJV?
Probably none.... it's the ease of understanding that makes it difficult for folks that have no clue what "verily" means. It's simply written in a language style that not many people understand anymore. There's nothing wrong with it, that I know of, other than the difficulty in understanding old expressions. It's great if you understand it... I can read it and understand it, as well, but for new (younger) believers, it's simply putting a restriction on reading and understanding. I recommend people use a modern, universally accepted translation to read in, but if they come to a point that is difficult to understand, cross-reference it with two or three other mainstream translations, and even maybe a paraphrased version to see if the point becomes clearer. If you think the KJV should be used as a baseline, then I have no problem with that.

why on earth would any one feel the need to leave the words...Christ,Lord,Jesus or God out of a bible?
<Bible Words Removed from New Versions>

Im staying with the Textus Receptus the Majority Text
or "faith of Christ" for that matter.

I absolutely love Christian discussion :)

Words are important, so is the "faith of Christ", this term and connective doctrine is largely found in the kjv.

[SUP]22 [/SUP]But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

[SUP]16 [/SUP]Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

[SUP]22 [/SUP]Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference

[SUP]9 [/SUP]And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith

[SUP]20 [/SUP]I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

It wasn't in 2 Sam 21:19 in the Hebrew texts...but it is in 1 Chron 20:5... the KJV added " Brother " it in in 2 Sam 21:19 as it is not in the text in Hebrew..but it is in 1 Chron. 20:5...the whole thing is insignificant...

1 Chronicles 20:5 (NASB)
[SUP]5 [/SUP] And there was war with the Philistines again, and Elhanan the son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

That was a big one for me. I am justified by Christ's faith which never waivers. My faith waivers. Huge difference!

Insignificant? The NASB contradicts itself. Can it be trusted if it contradicts itself?

It doesn't contradict itself...it said it in the place where it was actually written in the original Hebrew..it was the KJV that "added" brother on the scripture in 2 Sam 21:19...it is not in the original text...anyway this is just so foolish..

...all translations have errors or bias connected to certain words from the people translating them......it's a known fact............this will be the last I have anything to say about this subject..what a waste of time this is......I'd rather talk about how many angels can actually dance on the head of a pin.....read whatever version of the scriptures you want.....trust the Holy Spirit within you to guide you.......bless you all...:)

I think that's a fair statement. I don't have a problem with the accuracy of the KJV, just the assertion that it's the ONLY approved/correct/accurate version out there. I think there are translations that are at least as accurate as the KJV, and MUCH easier to read and comprehend.

Let me show you confusion... in the bible who is the morning star, the Devil or Jesus?
