I guess the word is 'exclusive' now --- it used to be called "going steady"...

And, yes - that is when you are considered a couple.

:)

And that's why I'm thinking, "No wonder these young'uns take so long to get married."

First date -- February 28th.

Wedding -- October 4th.

I have this distinct feeling the ones doing "the talk" don't even get that far by October. They're still talking! lol

What? Do you know what a mizpah is?

maybe he means this?

I'm not trying to duplicate what Laban and Jacob did. The men made a watchtower(mizpah) as a testimony of their promise - a promise that's significantly different than that being discussed in this thread.

I've used a set of necklaces - and they're labeled with the same name "mizpah" - to make my relationships officially exclusive.

The type of relationship is very different(yet willfully under God's watchful eye) and the object around our necks is significantly lighter.

Mizpah is not watch tower ...little difference in the words kind of a gender thing where one implies a place where one "sees" something and the other a place where something is "seen"

Never really seen the promise of relationship element..but I can see that ... Thanks

This is definitely one of those awkward things where "the talk" needs to take place so there are no misunderstandings. For example, she may think there is a relationship of sorts, and he thinks they are just being friendly and hanging out and talking. (or vice versa, as the case may be.)
Sooooo, I don't really know who should be the one to bring it up.....but I don't think there is an official 'couples' status until it has been discussed, and there is intent on both sides to exclusively be with that one individual to see where things may go.
As I said earlier, a bit awkward to initiate the conversation....but pretty inperative so there are no misunderstandings and clarification.

I have observed that those who give necklaces to their fiance during engagement never end up together. I dont know why and what's with necklaces.
I wasn't getting engaged and the necklace was to officially be dating exclusively...boyfriend/girlfriend.

:p

ps - I don't recall anyone every getting engaged using a necklace.

New trend?... (probably cheaper too...... Yeah I know... I'm gonna hear about that comment)

I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend
I'm not offended.

Just trying to clear the air.

Didn't realize the concept of a mizpah was so foreign to people.

When it comes to dating and relationships, I really dislike games, so I've been more straightforward and official in letting a woman know I'm interested in her and that I wish to pursue her in exclusivity. The necklace or mizpah has worked well. :)

My first gf used to ask me when she was going to get her engagement ring.

I used to tell her "when I finally get it instead of a gumball out of the machine".

 (speaking of cheaper...)
