What does it mean to rest in God?

you say, "would love to"... does this mean you don't feel you can rest in God now? if so, I am very sad to hear that.

is there something you feel you have to do before you can rest in God?
 
Two things come to my mind:

First, the Lord will take care of us. We need to develop our faith in him so we'll stop worrying and running ourselves ragged trying to solve problems that he will solve for us.

Second, I do believe the day will come when we have very few problems. Maybe this will help explain that:

Salvation is not a struggle. ..you can't improve on perfect! Our rest in God is simply trusting in Christ's FINISHED work

So yes, God does and He has, taken care of us in the very best way possible

That's really making it simple because the Bible is like hidden treasure. The more you dig and search, the more 'jewels' you will find

It is very important to grasp the TRUTH that as God rested upon the completion of creation ( someone referenced that back a ways) and called His work 'good' , so we rest IN God trusting in CHRIST'S perfect and complete work on OUR behalf!

That is such a beautiful concept! God deserves our praise and worship for WHO He is and ALL He has done

Now, the 'good works' we do are to give glory and praise to God...not to give credit to ourselves or to make ourselves better than we are in Christ because no one could possibly be be better!

And I wish I did not have to add this; to most of us here I believe we have professed and understand we do not continue in sin. ..in fact as we grow IN Christ, He changes us to be more and more like Him...but we will still never be perfect or complete in ourselves

I know how that can feel Tourist..I think maybe we all do at times

We bring our brother before you in Jesus name and pray you would open up this rest in Jesus and grant him peace...this world can really get to us sometimes. In your mercy you remember we are dust...but we are also Yours and we know You hear and You answer

And if the righteous are saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? 1 Peter 4:18
 
Hey you know...we seem to have someone who is hurting here...how about showing some of Christ's love and maybe praying for him like some of us have?
 
I haven't seen this quoted (sorry if I missed it), but I think it is relevant to the discussion...

John 3:21 "But he who practices the truth come to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

Given that Jesus is contrasting this person with the evil person in v.20, there is something to the idea that we as believers don't simply sit on our hands.

Tourist, I hear your struggle. I was just reading John 4... even Jesus became weary (v.6), so you're in good company. Rest with and in Him, brother! :)

it means that we need to realize that according to God we are all guilty of breaking the old covanant and that no matter how much one tries to go back and observe it nothing will change the fact that God has declared us guilty of breaking it. That is the whole reason Christ died for us. We are to obey the New Testament alone and when we do this we enter into His rest.

IMO this guy is a joke. He teaches that serving GOD dishonors him because GOD wants to serve us. Not kidding. He turns grace on its head.
 
I would compare it to sleep.

Everyone knows about sleeping or resting for the night. Sometimes it's peaceful sometime it's not. However sleep allows your body to heal and repair itself. Of you don't get enough rest your body breaks down and gets sleep.

God's rest is like sleep for the soul. It allows your soul to rest because you trust that God will take care of you and all your problems. It is having faith that you are loved and as long as you try your best every day, God will call you His beloved child. It is waking up to a hug and I love you because the sun has risen and you have clean air to breathe.

Some people take breathing for granted but if you ever experienced moment where drawing one breathe in is a struggle, you learn how to thank God for the simple things.

To not be able to enter God's rest is very very sad. Like king Saul and his tormenting spirit. Always afraid except when listening to David music.

Hey, what do you expect with a theology that considers anything you do as a 'work'.

I went to a Lutheran Church for a while where they insisted you drank from the Common Communion Cup without touching it lest it be perceived the gift of the Sacrament was turned into a 'work'.
 
Resting in the Lord is not a lazy passive existence. When we know that God has already provided everything we need in Christ and we access His wisdom, provision, strength and protection by faith, we'll be governed by the Holy Spirit in a highly strategic and active lifestyle.

It's a Spirit-led lifestyle where we flow in the good works that God planned for us all along as He lives through us to perform His work. ( The cool thing is that He rewards us for the things He does through us....what a great loving Father we have.)

I like to see it as 'He squeezes' good works from us rather than they 'flow out' of us. Maybe I'm hard headed.
 
LOL...no doubt....all of us are most likely hard-headed at some points in our life......Jesus did say "As I live by the Father so shall you live by Me"...it was the Father's works flowing from Jesus.....the "good works" will flow out of us as well as we see Him and who we are in Him...

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NASB)
[SUP]17 [/SUP] Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
[SUP]18 [/SUP] But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

are being transformed is passive which means it is happening to us...us not doing it...

So, keep our eyes on Jesus and His good works will flow out through and in us naturally...so that's gotta be good news!
