So I've been wondering, what does it mean to miss someone?
Some I've spoken to have suggested simply the absence of something you're used to is not present. Someone else suggested along the lines of a physical, emotional or spiritual need that you've allowed yourself to be filled elsewhere, that is no longer. And I've heard it described as generally unfulfilled need.

If you were to describe what it is to miss something or someone, how does that really sound out to you?

I'd love to hear your analytical thoughts on the anatomy of missing.

Thanks for your brain juices! :)

Missing - the state of not being found....jk

Something/someone that you desire and feel you need immediately but are unable to have due to circumstance or time....a feeling of longing....

yup that's all I got....

Need. Longing. Desire. Intriguing words to ponder within the scope of missing. Thanks.

You give someone a place in your thoughts, your life, your heart; for whatever reason they leave that place or become distant. So that place is empty.

I have been pondering this for the last little bit and not sure I have anything more to add than what has already been adequately posted. But, I do know myself, and when I truly am dealing with missing something or someone in a genuine way, my heart can become quite heavy. It is then that I feel compelled to pray for God to help me and the circumstances.
Sometimes there is a level of 'missing' that goes beyond a normal lonely feeling. It is a deep, deep connected longing that can't be filled. God knows our hearts and thoughts....and can get us through.

It feels like your heart is torn and shredded to pieces, unmendable you think until you find a cat as a replacement.
No serious when it's over it's just joy but I guess because God filled the hole.

I only miss one thing and that's sporadic eras from the past...I think it's cos I miss being innocent and now knowing my life gradually got more exciting whereas now I feel I'm gonna graduate and life will become a bit more meh....

I also miss one person who I met in 2011 who made me feel amazing but they turned out to be one of the worst friends ever :/ I still dream of them as we once were...hmmm

I would say it's a void, even if temporary, that can't be filled by anything than what is missing from you. Sometimes someone or something is just a part of you and when it's not, you're missing not only that thing, but a that part of you as well.

Missing.......I would say that I feel incomplete when Missing is around. Missing comes when I do a little retrospection. Missing is always associated with the Past. When I look back...missing is there in some form or fashion staring at me. It follows me like a shadow. MIssing never pulls me through. MIssing is jealous. Missing has NOTHING to do with my future at all. A person cannot 'miss" something that lays ahead of them. Missing tries to connect past and present like glue. For Missing to be effective, you have to have Past and Present in one accord, accounted and bonded. The longer one lives, the more Missing knocks at your door, expecting you to respond. Missing can easily be overcome in lots of situations by a Replacement. To some extent, Missing has side effects and symptoms that don't go away very easily. Missing does not keep good company..Sadness, Tears, Heartbreak,Bittersweet and LONGING are just a few of it's associates. Missing is never invited anywhere. It enjoys growing larger as time passes. Missing causes one to pause and reflect. Missing cannot be hurried...it goes at it's own pace. You might say that Missing is a Moocher!

For the literal definition... now, my take on it:

Along the lines of what people have already said in context of longing... To miss something/someone is usually some sort of metal or emotional state of utility or even with negative feelings....something you've grown accustomed to, enjoy, or expect...and finding the absence of that thing of notable concern.

"I really miss Summer." ...might be said because the person prefers warm weather over cold, or sunshine over rain, or having a less busy schedule...etc.

I don't necessarily want to solely relate it to discontent, but it has to do with desire or familiarity. A certain way or thing or place you expect or want which is no longer the case, and that fact making you feel deficient, nostalgic, sad, or the like.

I suppose, in psychological terms, it's an acquired stimulus and response which you've either grown accustomed to, desire, or both, but are no longer able to fulfill, experience, or re-create.

So, you might miss someone who's dead or moved away... You might miss a feeling you used to get when doing something you once enjoyed, but no longer do (diminishing returns).... You might miss a way of thinking, acting, or living that you no longer find yourself in.

I realize this may have sounded a bit redundant, but is it at least vaguely understandable? Copacetic?

YES! YES, YES........ What he said!! With true, genuine, 'missing', a part of you is very much missing.

Used to miss my twin brother but then I reckoned he doesn't miss me one bit up there in heaven and I have another brother and we're even too lazy to make an appointment, so who cares?
Missed my ex. Well he's still here. No need to miss him and the trouble I miss like a tooth ache.
Ha!

I've often felt I was different than the 'normal' or 'average' person in this department, anyway... Maybe I'm just more selfish or strange, but I don't often miss things much.

I've long accepted (back when I was a child) that everything changes. Everything, including people, come and go, and that permanence, much like control, were simply illusions we try to believe in order to make things feel better.

In a similar fashion, I try not to ever have exceptions. You're seldom let down (because you're not expecting anything), and more often pleasantly surprised that way.

I will say, though, that there are things I miss from time to time...

If I'm away from my family for a very long time (and not overwhelmed with an impossible schedule), then I'll think about and miss them (Dad, Mom, little brother, best friend...). When I've left it along for too long and really get into a song, then I'll miss music, and my band, and my songwriting, and such things...

At times I miss being happy and carefree...being innocent and adventurous, were everyday was new and fun. I miss being in love, both in the giving and the receiving of things associated with that phrase.

Yet, on the flip side, I do not miss nor mourn the dead. I do not miss nor mourn the strife I've had in life. I don't miss a place or a thing... I suppose that may be odd, but it's the reality I've lived in.
