If you don't get at least six hugs before church even starts, at our place, you start checking to see if you forgot to brush your teeth this morning.
My church has a few grandparent-like figures that run around giving hugs....I haven't been in so long, that I kind of worry when I finally do get to go back that everyone in the church will swarm me....Can I just hide in the sound-booth? Going from only being able to be around very few people back to church may be a little overwhelming for me. lol

I can relate to this. also the 'turn to your neighbor and say (x)' stuff. I don't really like forced interaction with people that I haven't developed relationship with otherwise. It's not like I'm going to be friends with them just because a pastor made me hug them and repeat his talking points @ them.

Even so I usually just go with it for other people's sake. But I'd rather get to know someone and then it means something.

who knows, maybe I was roughhoused too much when I was a kid and my brothers were 4 times my size. some people are just introverted and take longer to open up.

My oldest says this..."personal bubble space violation" and then gives a little laugh...then says "no seriously!"

You can always rub onions on your clothes.

Or do a wet sneeze in their neck.

At our church we do handshakes...but in the singles ministry where I lead, we tend to hug people we've know for a while. I am careful with the men though, I do hug men who I am close friends with, we either serve together or long time friends. I prefer not to hug strangers.

I always have to deal with the "man" hugs. Most of them we have not even spent a total of 5 minutes discussing anything important. What I have learned to do is to hold my hand out in front of me for a handshake when I see one coming. It usually works. A hand is a barrier and a handshake is friendly. Try it.

I'm sure that I have a reputation for being sort of cold (who cares?), but it saves me from having to be squished against my wishes.

Yet, I look around me and see all these women loving their hugs from all and everyone - and I wonder if I really am cold

I love it when someone hugs me with their eyes first. Not those ritual hugs where they don't even really look at you first.
Isn't hugging with your eyes called "leering?"

This happens? I don't need a stranger hugging me. I'd just be honest... XD

Very generous. I'm more of a "lose it at the elbow" kind of person.

I'm actually beginning to feel a little sad for some of you. Could I suggest that you go out of your way to spend some time around a few Down's Syndrome kids?

Or.......................... maybe not. It might creep you out.

Oh now we're talking! Kids flock to me like I'm Mother (or Grandmother) Goose. Tiny babies will smile and coo at me in the grocery store and toddlers grab my hands and chatter away to me. It's fantastic! I love it!! And people with Down's Syndrome are easily drawn to me as well. I am a smiley person... I am approachable... I talk to just about everyone I meet. And just by nature of Christ Jesus I exude the joy of the Lord and am truly happy meeting & talking with people. Ask Melita. She knows I'm silly-happy most of the time. LOL!

I'm just not up for grabs anytime there's a free-for-all hug-a-thon. :p

Some of those 21[SUP]3[/SUP] kids I'm talking about are 40 or 50 years old.

kodiak...
So how would you handle a holy spirit hug? That's right...that warm, fuzzy, definite envelopment that you get when He is near/within you. Paul says to greet thy brethren with a holy kiss! Jesus touched, took children into His lap, and, according to Jewish wedding dance tradition, includes hugging, spinning, holding hands, arm in arm, waist and arm and more! When I worship with others, even new attendees or even visitors, as the Holy Spirit moves, so does the hugging, the swaying, the arm in arm, the rejoicing together. Walls are broken down.

Hmmmm..... a holy spirit hug? I don't attribute "things" (laughter, spinning, dancing, etc.) to the person of the Holy Spirit. But that's just me. To each his own.

Don't know if this has been said...but just cross your arms, it's harder for them to hug you when your elbows are jabbing them (when they try to hug) and it gives off the body language vibe of "leave me alone" that or just go to the bathroom...and wait it out...lol

Kids flock to me too, but not in a Mother Goose sense. Maybe more of a Father Time sense. Haha! ;) :) I love it!

When I taught a class with about ten kids between the ages of 8-10. I put into practice of welcoming each and every one with a warm hug and after a while they would see me around and run up and give me a hug that melted my heart each and every time. I have had one very inappropriate hug from a gentleman, but I still enjoyed loving on people and still do. However, I'm not one to enjoy a hug from someone I don't know at least give me one good conversation.

Awkward.... there are some weird people out there that are too "huggy" usually you can tell them apart like a semi-truck in a line of cars they just stick out of the crowd....and are best avoided....slowly shake hands while proceeding to the exit doors (to not make it too obvious)...is the best plan of escape....

if you have a problem with someone hugging you in church, you might wanna examine yourself because church is about love.
