same here -- no text or data plan on my phone. though i did finally get a googlevoice number, so i can text now over wi-fi signals.

i have a car stereo with a bluetooth connection to the phone, so sometimes i talk on the phone while i'm driving - but i've never actually held a phone up to my ear and driven. beside how wrong and dangerous that is, it wouldn't be possible for me, because i drive a stick-shift. you need two hands to do that :)

I use this neat thing that everyone has on a smartphone these days but... for some strange reason... nobody uses. It's speech-to-text, and all modern smartphones do it. I talk what I want to say and the program types out what I said.

If I had to actually type out what I say I'd never text while driving. But since I can just talk what I want to say, texting while driving is easy.

Of course I'm in west TN. If I lived in a city with a lot of traffic, even talk-texting would be out of the question.

I don't even text when I'm not driving. I've never texted. I've never used a phone for anything but to call someone or to be called.

Back in the olden days when cell phones weighed a pound or two, I had one. But I had it in case I got lost or to call my boss to let them know I needed the factory garage door opened to park my car. (I worked in a ghetto where kids stoned my car every day, so just easier to park it where they couldn't get to it after a while.) Even then, I'd pull onto the side of the street to do that.

Rather scary though. I knew those guys on the opposite corner of the factory sold heroin. I didn't know they'd walk clear across a street to a parked car. Fortunately, my coworkers saw them and got word down to open that door before they came to my window. (I am naive to the end. lol)

This is what I don't get about texting.

Bell made this cool new invention called a telephone. You could actually pick something up and talk to someone far away.

So a century later, someone made the same thing without wires. And then, Bam! Everyone uses it as a telegraph/typewriter. Isn't talking easier? And sure, sometimes the person isn't there, but then this other invention was created -- an answering machine.

I honestly think inventions anymore make life harder, not easier.

I'm pretty good at texting without looking at the phone while I'm doing it, but even then, I never text in heavy traffic unless I'm at a stoplight. So yes, but I'm careful about it.

Statistic I heard on the news 10-20 years ago:
80% of drivers become bad drivers while texting.
80% of drivers believe they are good drivers while texting.

I live in the city, so can do most of what I want to do by walking. While walking, I have almost been run over by people texting in their car (and I was on the sidewalk waiting for the light to change green!), walking, and riding a bike. I don't like people traveling any which way while texting. Suddenly I have to be the responsible one. Something is clearly wrong if you think I'm the one without my head in the clouds.

My mind is in the clouds so often, my family named my real estate. It's called Lynnie Lalaland! And now I'm the responsible one?
