I understand the basics of this, but what my question is, why is it so hard to get over a sin sometimes. I mean last night I took a step back in my walk, and I know it was wrong and I ask for forgiveness and ask that I may be restored. But why do I still feel so distant from the lord? I don't know a much better way to explain, but hopefully you guys understand

Because you don't yet see the reality that you are literally a new creation in Christ and that old things are dead as a doornail.

Sin, guilt, shame, death, have all been overcome by the blood of Jesus Christ. :)

That's the Good News!

Amen!....spot on...:).......

Condemnation, guilt and shame are not tools of the Holy Spirit and He doesn't sub-contract them out to our enemy. We need to learn not to listen to the voice of the "accuser".....instead listen to the truth of how our good, loving father sees us in Christ then the things that harass us will fall off of us like dead leaves that don't belong on the new creation.

I wondered about this question for a long time, but as I walked through repenting for the sins which led to my divorce, I saw something in 2 Corinthians 7 which I hadn't seen before...

10 For the sorrow which is according to the will of God produces a repentance which leaves no regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

When I repented in the right way, the sorrow and regret dissolved and disappeared. The way I understand repentance is that I agree with God that I did something, that it was sinful, and that I need His forgiveness for it. Now when I look back on the things I did wrong, the shame, sting, and ugliness I felt are gone, along with the 'worldly' remorse I had felt. Now I just rejoice in the fact that God led me out of both the sin and the worldly sorrow I had over them.

It's by faith in Jesus Christ, which is the very Word of God, that we have victory over sin and death through the power of His Spirit that now works in us.

1 John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Romans 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

John 1:12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Often times when we get stuck in sin, it's being on a mouse wheel. So we feel something, commit the sin.. then feel bad or condemned for it and then because we feel condemned, guilty etc.. (rather than convicted to change).. we may return to that same sin to alleviate the bad feelings.

For eg.. alcohol and drugs.. among other things..

God wants us when we sin.. not to dwell on the sin.. but know we are forgiven and then focus on Jesus and His payment for sin for us. He then empowers us to flee from it.

Guilt and condemnation don't come from God. He never condemns.. but convicts.

Eg.. Oh man! I overdid it last night when I went out with my friends.. should have been 1 beer.. ended up being 5!

The response that would lead to drinking more would be-- 'I am such an egg! I am stupid..! I am this.. etc..' Condemning yourself. So the bad feeling .. and then you may return to the same drinking the next time as a quick relief from feeling bad.

Godly response.. 'I drunk too much last night, Lord. I am sorry. Thankyou that you have forgiven me.' Then you would go into scripture.. looking at verses about fleeing liquor.. by God's grace. Not focusing on the liquor.. but on Jesus' payment for sin and what He wants for you.

Jeremiah_29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

1Timothy_6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

2Timothy_2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

James_4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

So.. the focus isn't on the sin.. but God's love and commands

Listen to Dino. Do not give in to the guilt that says you have to "do penitence" to be returned to fellowship. This is one of Satan's tricks that gets us to "doing our own Salvation" by what we have made "repentance" to be.

Repentance "starts" your walk with Jesus, it is not your personal method of "fixing" sin whenever you execute another convincing performance to make things right. You're saved (and forgiven) without the requirement of you getting on stage in front of God to insure it through continuing demonstrations of your piety.

He'd like to hear you say you're sorry. But He already knows if you are, or you aren't. Your "grieving well enough" does not convince Him.

Depending on what you did a better question would be are you sure you don't won't to do a repeat instead of a repent? Cause sometimes we still intend to do the same sin but we just want to know how far we can go until the holy ghost convicts us or until the almighty punishes us. I think you should seriously ask yourself that question and if you're sure that you're sorry for doing whatever you did and are done with it then your conscience should be clear enough to reach the lord so that your prayers won't be hindered. I say keep praying and throw some fasting in there as well and things should work out. If what you did wronged someone else then you may want to apologize to that person but if not just keep seeking the lord. I hope this advice helps.

ask the apostle Paul.....Romans 7

[SUP]21 [/SUP]I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. [SUP]22 [/SUP]For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. [SUP]23 [/SUP]But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. [SUP]24 [/SUP]O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? [SUP]25 [/SUP]I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Your statement about conviction (accusation) and punishment (reprimand) doesn't agree with Isaiah 54:9 & 10 -
9. For this is as the waters of Noah to Me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, nor reprimand you.10. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, says the Lord who has mercy on you.

In Jesus' parable about the prodigal son, nowhere does the Lord say that the father got angry at his son or that he punished him. Surely the son suffered for his own choices, but Jesus said that the father waited for the son to come to the realization that everything the father has was also the son's. And that the father never was angry at him or punished him. Jesus was telling us how great a love the Father has for us.

You should find This helpful...

Cry out: oh wretched man that I am, who can deliver me from this body of sin?
Praise God Jesus can!
Confess over yourself that you died with Christ and are raised with Christ, get baptized in the Holy Spirit and start to live in Romans 8, pray a lot, focus on Him and loving Him and others instead of: not sinning. Get to know who you are in Christ.
And sometimes you also need deliverance.

There has to be some pain with sin. Otherwise we might never stop doing it. The Lord is merciful.

You must find a way to stop. That's the first step. The word offers many things to help, the biggest one, getting on your knees when temptation arises.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Drive lust out of your mind.
James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
The place to stop sin is when it becomes a thought. Work on it. It can be done, and it is done.

There has to be some pain with sin. Otherwise we might never stop doing it. The Lord is merciful.
Many folks on here don't ever stop sinning. And not only that, they have no intention of doing so, which is why they like that crutch that satan hands to them "oh, it's impossible for me to stop sinning, I can't help it, I'm weak and so is God's spirit."
To say it is impossible to stop sinning is to say that God's spirit and the blood of Jesus Christ wasn't enough.
Hebrew 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
They also believe that even the grace of God isn't enough.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
They will claim to be christian, yet tribulation overcomes them. I don't know who their savior is, but my savior has overcome the world.

The Bible says that a Spirit led life will not fulfill the desires of the flesh, which means they will be tempted, but will not carry it out,so the way you overcome sin is to allow the Spirit to lead you,in which you will show the characteristics of the Spirit, and not the flesh.

But some people although they appear to repent did not really repent, for if you repent, but keep it in your heart that you will not give it up,but want to do it at a future time, then that is not repentance,so if you do not feel close to the Lord,it is not His fault.

People know if they are giving up sin or not,and to repent but keep it in your heart does not count as repentance, for repentance is to give it up,which some people repent, but do not get rid of it,but hold unto it,but do not do it for a while thinking they are alright at that time, but to keep it in your heart although not doing the physical act is not repentance, knowing you will eventually do it again.

Well I usually just step over it as it tries to trip me lol jk But in all seriousness we more than understand some of us me specifically understand God's grace but still tend to chain ourselves with the worry of our sins. I have always had a low opinion of myself never had much confidence so it's pretty difficult for me to see what God sees when looks at me, I know what he sees but I am unable to believe it when I look at myself with my own eyes all I ever see is my weakness my flaws my sins ect.

But he always tells me to keep my chin up and keep moving forward promising me that one day I will understand why he sees me like he does. The main thing is a repentant heart, asking for forgiveness for our sins is always a sign of humbleness but a repentant heart is a state of being a state of heart the fact that you are concerned with your sin is a sign you have a repentant heart, a lot ppl even christians believe that grace is basically a free ticket to sin and do as they please not feeling any guilt

AuntieAnt did you know that love will cover a multitude of sins 1Peter 4:8? Well I believe that and while I don't know you I'd certainly like for us to unite to encourage the person on here asking for help. as to my statements not lining up with the prophet well that may be because I wasn't taking my text from there. To the person seeking advice how about reading Psalm 51? See what I'm talking about is the holy spirit (John 16:8 )convicting the world of sin which can also be applied to the individual who's sinned. That's that power that let's us know that we've disobeyed the lord.See we've got to recognize and admit to ourselves first that WE have sinned before we can even think about repenting .Sometimes the lord may chasten us see that's the warning telling us to slow it down cause we're about to slip into disobedience.Hebrews12:7-13 and Deut 8:5. Then if we're still willfully unrepentant Hebrews 10:26 .let's unite and try to encourage through the ability that the lord has given us. You may know a bit more than me in certain scriptures or I might know a bit more than you in others then we may not agree on some but just as long as we can agree that we all need Jesus and that He is the son of the Living God then we should be alright.
