Hey guys! I was encouraged by one of my friends to post about my upcoming baptism. I will be getting baptized either this Sunday or next Sunday and am excited but also nervous! What should I expect? I have the fear that he is going to drop me....is that logical?

How can he drop you when you're gonna be in a baptismal water font (pool)? Congrats.. :)

Well, normally the water is deep enough that if he does drop you, you just float anyway (and shallow enough that you can easily get your footing again). I doubt he drops you though.

Enjoy it!

Well, if they do drop you, I hope you're getting baptised in something big enough for full emersion. At least falling into water doesn't hurt. lol

I've never seen anyone dropped, and I was just-barely 10 when I became my younger brother's godmother, so I held on tight to ten pounds of full-squirming, did-not-like-being-there-or-getting-wet baby for a good half an hour.

Unlike squirming baby, you do have some control. The only thing I was worried about was facing upward when I was immersed. Whenever I'm looking up in a swimming pool, something happens to my nose that feels like there is a big bubble shove up it. It hurts. But they taught me how to get around that by holding my nose. (Duh now! Obvious answer. Why didn't I think of that? Because I was so scared of hurting my nose! lol)

Outside of that, the only other thing that made me nervous was I hate being the one in the spotlight, for fear everyone is staring at me. That one was resolved simply because a few of us were baptised that day, so no one was singled out for spotlight.

There is something that does happen when the water slips off. I'm not sure if it's just a visceral response or it is what it seems it should be, but there is this giddiness afterward. For me, it had to do with the physicalness of what was happening. My sins were already washed away by his blood, or I never would have wanted to be baptised. But when I was baptised it felt like the sins were washed away literally.

Can't do it justice, but I hope you get what I mean when it happens to you. Very cool getting the sense along with the knowledge. Enjoy it. It's a once in a lifetime experience.

Ahhh man! You saw it? That's got to be something like being the next driver in a driving ed. car after the last beginner didn't see that stop sign! Hard to not worry about the next stop sign after that! Still, it is extreme rare that happens. You're the first person I ever heard that saw it once.

I was baptized in a river because the church I was attending didn't have a place to baptize anyone in the church. It was March and cold on that day so you can image the thoughts that the devil put in my mind. But I just keep praying and I had read Romans chapter 6 several times before the day I was baptized. I just prayed and keep Jesus on my mind and being baptized was a truly amazing feeling. When I came out of the water, I truly felt like I had risen with Christ to walk in the newness of life with him.

The anxiety you feel is just a trick of the devil. You'll be fine and I promise you, being baptized is an awesome feeling.

Guys, thanks so much for the encouragement! What does the pastor normally ask you before you get baptized?

Take a big breath, slowly release it back out your nose during the whole thing, and bring your feet back under you so that it is YOU doing most of the standing back up.... not just lying there, expecting him to raise you back up to a fully standing position. Consider him as being there only to guide your body, and support you as you lie back. The standing up part is mostly up to you.

Kind of squat down over your feet on bended knees in preparation for standing back up as you finish up and start back up. The whole time under water is no more than about three seconds, so stay aware of repositioning your feet directly under you right away, and take responsibility for your own weight.

Why not go practice it somewhere in a shallow pool with a friend? After all, standing up in water is something all of us has done a hundred times before... just never from a backwards lying position.

I was just so eager to get baptized, I didn't have a worry in the world. I didn't second guess anything, just kept praising God for saving me.

Because that is what Baptism is all about - showing our gratitude and love to God for him saving us. Put the focus on Jesus, and you will be fine!

That one depends on the denomination or nondenomination. But basically they tend to ask if you're doing this because you want to. (Well, unless you're Catholic, in which case it's useless to ask a baby that question. lol)

The pastor supports your back very well as you go under and come back up, so it's really not a biggie!

As for questions, I would think your pastor would go through that before the ceremony. Some denominations have a formal liturgy, some just ask a few questions and others will want you to give a testimony.

I watched this show where a kid lost his dad at a young age and it happened so fast and his parents shielded him from it as much as they could and didn't even allow him to go to the funeral. So he started playing with an action figure and it was like he lived in his own little world. So the angel in the show told the surviving family members who didn't know he was an angel that the kid needed to greive so the healing can begin. Grieving is a process that can take time but I agree with the show I watched about it.

I think I replied to the wrong post.

Not sure if you know this or not but they actually drown you until you literally die and then you awake as a new person. At least that's how the "real" christians do it. Don't be scared. Lol

Congrats! :)

That is a man made opinion of what baptism is. True baptismsm is the answer of a good conscience towards God.
