Something unusual has happened in my daily routine. A couple of years ago, I started gint to bed at sunset or before, depending on my disposition.

Now I sleep about ten hours a night and a nap during the day. I am 71, ust about 72. I am not ill, so I cannot finger any specific outside influence.

Years ago, when I would camp in the Rockies of Colorado, I would also go to bed at sunset due to the snowin winter, and I would always go right to sleep and awake with the sunrise. This leads me to believe perhaps this is more normal than most of what is said to be proper sleep time, or I am ailing from some unknown disorder......I believ I amjust fine.

Deos anyone here know anything about this situation for an old person???

Thank you. God bless you for reading...........j

I think sleep patterns are individual
and that they are affected by age and what we do / don't do during the day
I am only 31 and I tend to need 9-10 hours to feel rested. I know others that manage on five and it's a mystery to me :p

As long as you feel rested after sleeping, you should be OK

Just a note. I am not in any manner alarmed about this, but it is a surprising change from younger years..thanks for your encouraging posts.

Actually, I was beginning to think that perhaps it is more natural to sleep better and more by retiring at sunset, of course some of us live where the sun sets and remains so for a long time. Oh well, it was a thought.

Well, it does make sense to sleep at sunset and rise at sunrise

only problem is in my part of the world is that that makes for either very long or very short days :p

Hi,

With age comes different body changes
so expect changes its just part of life with out knowing your history and how active you are would be hard to give you a over all idear of what would be the reason of those changes , though I would say just a normal slowing down of cause the bodys hormones play a big part in this so don't rule those out and if you have a blood test you may find a lack in some areas and you may need a boost in say E as that does dictate how the body is doing , that's just one .

some others are a change in your food intake and maybe different food and your body is not using that as it has done .

Your Estrogen levels deficiency,
that cause,s a lot of issue,s .

Exercise, sleeping regularly, and drinking an adequate amount of water...people really underestimate how much paying attention to those things and actually implementing them improves your quality of life.

You're too young to slow down a lot. Maybe, some, but not a lot. "Movement" (and, yes, I mean that in ALL ways) is what keeps you active. And, alive. I still ride both my bicycle and motorcycle, but I do get to bed far too late... usually around midnight. I am usually up around 7:30 or 8:00.

The body does have circadian rhythms. There is a bodily mechanism using the eyes and other elements that function in a way that influence our body for different functions at different times of the day.
Sleep is one of them. When night starts to fall, our bodies begin to prepare for the many functions that sleep does. One of them is the body cleansing itself. It is like a self dialysis.
That is a big reason why eating late is not good, it disrupts that.
This is a contributor as to why people get disease. They don't sleep enough hours to complete the process, or the prime hours, which studies show is generally from around 10pm to 2am.
So over years the toxins build up in the body, due to many reasons, but on of them being sleep issues.
Finally the body says I had enough, I can't operate like this. Some of us take better care of our cars then our bodies. And the body cries out it needs a some TLC and rebels in the way of disease.

I'm impressed. Not a lot of people seem to know this.

I have never been able to get the 8 hours everyone says you need...I could not even nap as a child...I would keep getting up

also somewhat of a night owl...my husband really has to get more sleep...but he works hard...he naps too

I dunno...I like the quiet night hours but I also like the early morning hours...if I could sleep from say 11am to 5pm or something, I would prob like that but that would really put me outside of the norm LOL!

if you are sleeping those 10 hours, you might really need them...

You are fine brother, for your age that is impressive to get 10 hours of sleep and it can improve your health and length of life.

As you age your cortisol level decreases ( the hormone that helps you awake and gives you bursts of energy throughout the day) so for your age it is quite normal to sleep longer to recoup/bank up energy that you need b/c you don't have as much cortisol flowing in the blood.

My advice is keep sleeping like that because it will improve your health and well-being. Get that 10 hrs of sleep your body will thank you when you wake up and feel awesome/refreshed.

Namaste............thank you so much for this informative post. My question is mostly curiosity, but also, I have heard from many other people that as we age we have a tendecy to insomnia??? Ergo when thinking about my sleep habits, I felt a bit perplexed about the hours I sleep. Guess what?! I do feel great when I am up and busy. There have been times this past year when I have been busy breaking cement blocks in my garden area with a hand held sledge hammer, and it has not hindered my activity, so your explanation of the hormone needs and how the sleep is good is very gratifying. I thank God for the family in Christ, Yeshua......you are family indeed.

Hmm...I've actually heard as you age, you have to sleep more because the body just doesn't have the same amount of hormones (Males: testosterone, females: estrogen) as say a person in their 30's. These two hormones are the main drivers in each respective gender for energy levels and they are converted into different chemicals depending on where they are being used/organ....

If you have trouble sleeping a natural product you can use is melatonin but you should consult your doctor as a lot of natural products interfere with medicines you may be on like warfarin, or other anti-clotting (blood thinners) medicines.

Sleep is very good, they actually have done studies that if you study for a test right before sleeping your have improved memory/recall of the information on the next day. They say this is because your brain during sleep is being rewired/new axons and neural pathways are being established to make information relay faster.....it's like using a fiber optic cable compared to a coax copper cable. they both transmit info but a fiber optic does it more efficiently and faster...same with sleep helping your neurons to become faster....leading to better memory and recall...

Keep up the sleep!

at our age Jaume,
the more sleep the better - :):)

PS. 4:8. - I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for Thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
PRO. 3:24. - When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Two weeks ago I started working the 11pm - 7am shift. My sleep pattern has been totally disrupted. I feel drained all of the time. I don't have to work tonight so instead of working I am going to try to get some sleep while it is dark outside.
