Dream CAN be used by God to tell us something
.... but it is unrealistic to assume that the average dream is is a message from God.

Researchers tell us humans dream every night, sometimes several dreams. This is the brains way of "sorting through" and sometimes processing impressions. An example: The first time I watched the news I had a nightmare about being shot at. I doubt that was a dream from God... it was simply my brain dealing with a scary impression.

I think there is a danger of people trying to attach interpretations to dreams, which the Lord did not intend.
There is a danger is misinterperting any message of God...why single out dreams.
You may be discouraging people or even preventing them from hearing from God.

I know that. But some dreams can be from God. It may not happen often, but it can and does.

That I agree with
It's just that some people here get over- eager and seem to think that all their dreams are prophecies

The title of this thread is: “Dreams … are they messages?” That is what I responded to. My answer is: Seldom, if ever, is a dream a message.

I think dreams do reveal things to us sometimes, things that we just hadn’t been paying attention to until we had the dream. I even had a dream, just before my mother died, that almost seemed to be a vision of people “on the other side” waiting for her.

But the idea that the Lord regularly plants dreams with figurative messages woven into them in our heads doesn’t make sense. If he has something to say, he can just say it, in a dream or while we are awake.

Do I now need to go through each dream to determine if the Lord was speaking to me? What if I dream that I robbed a drug store and decide the Lord is telling me to rob a drugstore?

This is what you said in post number 20.
"I think there is a danger of people trying to attach interpretations to dreams, which the Lord did not intend."

I am not sure if you meant the Lord did not intend us to interpret our dreams, ever. If if you meant the danger is a mis-interpretation.
If it is the former, I strongly disagree.
If it is the latter, we are back to where we can misinterpret a lot of things God tells us, not just dreams, so why single them out. I am not sure, I could be wrong, but it seems as if your implying misinterpreting dreams is more dangerous then doing so with any other of Gods messages. If your saying that, I don't agree, and I would like to know why you say this?
If your not saying that, okay fine, but it may not just be me that thought maybe you were saying that.
r
As far as your post #25, first and second paragraphs, I agree. It does not happen much. But dreams can and do sometimes reveal something God is communicating with us.
As far as how God can communicate with us...Can we limit the Lord?
He talked to Moses plainly, spoke to Joseph of Issac and Joseph Mary's husband through dreams.
He spoke through a donkey. He wrote on a wall. He wrote on tablets.
I just don't understand how some Christians can say God will communicate with us or not communicate in such and such a fashion. I am not saying you, but I have seen some people say God won't message us in dreams anymore.

Your last paragraph. It is your connection of the Holy Spirit that will determine if you have the awareness of what God is telling.

The lord speaks to me in dreams. It is clear on when he is speaking too. It is not like I have to think back and try to determine where he is speaking. Most of my dreams are jumbled. But the lord will reveal something small within them. My thoughts are in there but the lord steps in in some areas. For example. I had a dream a long time ago about these horses. There was green grass on my side of the fence and the horses on the other side had a disease. I was scared the disease would hurt my cows and horses (I don't own any). But looking at a diseases horse I couldnt help but feel sympathy.. I had to reach out and comfort it. So I put my hand on its head to calm it (this I have done before to one of my old horses/my thoughts). Later on the dream changed and I was with my sister and a friend. I found this ring and it had writing on it. It is not anything like the lord of thing rings by the way. It was like a script, it was writing along the ring, kind of sideways. It would write messages. But it was a lot of writing. It basically was telling us there was going to be a bad thing happening and there was nothing we could do to stop.it. it would write in a way that was calming but something felt off.. the ring was also a shiny pink ish colour. Then as my hunch was revealed it was the devil writing on the ring... he can seem normal and he knows God's word too. He will use it. And as I grabbed the ring I noticed a red stripe along the side of the ring. On the inside of the ring was pure silver. And it looked very different from the rest of the ring. And in the ring was more writing. More Comforting. It declared our victory over what was coming. It comforted us. Spoke peace. Spoke joy. Spoke love and kindness. I knew right away. It was the lord. The red stripe seperated the top of the ring that was plain in sight.. the devil had no idea the inside of the ring was God writing to us... it was a very strange dream. But through prayer and guidance with others. I was able to figure out more from the dream. The lord was trying to comfort me..
But the red stripe represents his blood. The devil will try to convince us to follow him. He may do it in ways that are plain in sight. That make sense etc. The Lords was subtle. But he was there. He was present. And he declared his victory.. there are far more things I could explain about more from the messages the lord gave me in that dream. But it would take far too long. I know the lord can do it.
He has given people in the bible dreams. And he continues to today.
My dreams are never the same. The messages are always different. But I have discerned through prayer and time with lord to know what is truth and a lie. Some days it's hard to tell. But resting in the lord he will help guide you.
Remember Matthew 7:7 it says along the lines of ask, it will be given, seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. The lord will give you answers.
I believe the lord can and will speak to us through dreams. But we can misread our dreams to be from him when they aren't. The most important thing to do always is, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and DO NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
When I have dreams that I think are from the lord I have to keep remembering this piece of Scripture.. Remember every part of it. Walk in it. Always.
Trust. Acknowledge etc etc.
The lord speaks to us all in different ways. To Him. There are no limits to how he will try to reach you.

God gave me a dream two days before a hurricane that implied in a very loose way for me to move my stuff out of the basement because it was going to flood. The first day I did not get it. The second day it dawned on me what God was trying to tell me. If I had been spiritually dull, I would not have gotten it.
Another time, my 27 year son was missing. He was missing for 8 days. The 5th or 6th day he was missing, I can't recall now exactly which day it was, I had a dream about him in a car. Then 3 or 4 days later we discovered him in a car.
Another time I had a dream about someone I was having a problem with, and in a very stark way, very direct and blunt, I was "told" stay away from this guy. Avoid him like the plague. I find out a few weeks later he is going around and telling people nasty things he wants to do to me.
Another dream, it was a time when I was having a hard time in my life, I was backslidden, and in my dream satan is condemning me, and very, very distinctly, I hear a voice I absolutely believe was God, and He said he is my son, meaning me.
Another time I am sleeping and it was near sunrise, and I hear a very clear voice say, get up and pray for so and so. So I did, not knowing what to pray for and why. I find out later he was in a car accident at that very time.
I know there are quite few more, but I can't recall even half of them right now, and it would be boring anyway to keep reading them.
I just wanted to make a point.
If God speaks to me like this in dreams, then there has to be other Christians he does too.
This is why I don't like it when other Christians say things that imply or state things that may discourage others from hearing from God in their dreams.
I know it doesn't happen much. But it happens, and maybe with some people more times in a year then we may be willing to think is possible.

really? What about this?:
Acts 2:17 and Joel 2:28.
The thing is that scripture makes it clear who it is that is doing the dreaming.So..........................
We weigh our judgement against scripture.

I got dreams about my kids and they came to pass. God always warns me in my dreams about something that will happen, I too leave them alone without taking any action. Trying to learn how to decipher them so I can be be obedient.

so when my grandfather died, I could not stop crying..I was shaking...I would be lying in bed staring at the ceiling and I would just shake as though I was cold and shivering

considering all the events following, it seems appropriate now

at his funeral, everything was quiet and I could not stop crying...people must have been embarrassed...poor inconsolable grand-daughter..no words made sense...people looked like two dimensional cutouts to me and I just kept crying and shivering

I had a dream....I was in my grandparents house and my grandfather smiled at me and said 'come here'...I followed him down the stairs to the garage and he opened the door and went in and I followed him. I was upset because relatives were taking his things and an uncle that had always given him grief had taken his car. I said 'he took your car'...he smiled at me and said 'It doesn't matter because I don't need it anymore."

When I woke up, I was ok. I understood. My grandfather was a Christian. I had peace.

That was a very personal dream and God gave that to me and didn't have to say a word. That's how God is. He knows how I felt and that nothing could console me. He let my grandfather speak to me one more time in a dream.

Yes. Yes, he does speak in dreams. I've seen the content of dreams come to pass.

13 years old... I had a dream of war.

Woke up the next morning, the soviet coup had happened, it was on the news.

God told me something once in a dream when i was about 22 years old about myself. I guess he knew i needed identity from him because my family sure wouldn't help me with a sense of self esteem.

I was left without doubt that it was true a couple of years ago.

So yes, dreams and visions happen via the spirit. They are a real thing. But sometimes sorting out truth from lies is, well, difficult, especially with the enemy working against God's children (satan lies. it's what he does).

My two cents is, be careful.

I am sorry to hear about the fire, At least everyone survived. Funny you should say about a fire in your post, which I just read. Last night, before I went to bed, I was thinking about and thanking God, for having a roof over my head, food, the simple things that God provides to just survive.
And out of no where I said to myself, ya, know, even if there was a fire, and all my personal and sentimental stuff perished, it would be okay.
And now you mention this in a post.
So maybe God wants me to pray for you. I am going to.
