POLL: Are you a cessationist or a continuationist?

Exerts from:
http://www.gotquestions.org/continuationism.html

"Continuationism is th
e belief that all the spiritual gifts, including healings, tongues, and miracles, are still in operation today, just as they were in the days of the early church. A continuationist believes that the spiritual gifts have “continued” unabated since the Day of Pentecost and that the demonstration of “signs, wonders, and miracles” (2 Corinthians 12:12), as witnessed in the apostolic era, should be a hallmark of today’s church as well."

Cessationism: "The contrasting viewpoint is called cessationism, which teaches that some of the gifts “ceased” and are no longer in operation today. The question in cessationsm is not whether there are gifts still being given but which ones. Cessationists point to verses such as 1 Corinthians 13:10 and the fact that the miraculous gifts seem to be closely tied to the ministry of the apostles and the verification of God’s revelation (Acts 2:22; 14:3; 2 Corinthians 12:12) as evidence that the miraculous gifts of the Spirit have ceased.

As with any doctrine, there are extremes on either side. Some cessationists believe that all spiritual gifts ceased with the end of the apostolic age."

Please explain the "but..." part if you choose these options, in the comments below.

In the OP the definitions of the words were given, just in case someone didn't know. :)

I think of miracles in the way I think of fireworks. First you have one go off here and there (like Old Testament prophets), for a long time. Then there's the grand finale (Miracles of Christ) and a whole bunch go off all at once. Then it's over and you only see smoke lines (apostles) in the shape of fireworks- which do not linger for long. Then silence (miraculous miracles ceased). Unexplainable things still happen through prayer, but no one is going to walk on water or be instantly cured of blindness.

Miracles had a purpose, and that purpose has been fulfilled. Miracles were for identification- to prove the prophets really were from God, to prove that Jesus truly was the Messiah, and to prove that the apostles were the men hand-picked by Christ in person.

But faith, hope, and love remain.

Okay, now that everyone agrees that we have all the gifts, then what gifts do we have?

I believe the gifts are still for today,for why would they be able to have the gifts back then,but not today,when saints are saints,and the Church is the Church,and miracles,and gifts,should always be in effect to draw people to Christ,which tongues is a witness to the unbeliever,and prophesy is a witness,that God,and His word is true,and why would not healings be for today,when the love that Jesus showed while on earth,is the same love that applies today.

Jesus said that signs,and wonders,shall follow,the saints,and if those things are a witness to people back then,and God loves people,then they would still be in operation today,for the operation of the Church,is the operation of the Church,from start to finish.

1Co 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
1Co 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
1Co 13:6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
1Co 13:7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
1Co 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1Co 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1Co 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1Co 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
1Co 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

In essence this is saying that out of all the things we do on earth,concerning laboring for the kingdom of God,that love will be the only thing that will continue on for all eternity.

It is not saying that these things passed back then,but these things will no longer be in effect,and no longer needed when we get to heaven,and the only thing that will remain is love,which the Bible calls charity,which is love in action,which God said do not love by word only,but love in deed,and in truth.

Out of faith,hope,and charity,charity is the greatest,because faith is only needed on this earth,and hope is only needed on this earth,but love will remain forever,and God is love.

We know prophesy can pass,after the physical action comes to pass,but we also know there is prophesy to come,for the Bible says one day,that when Jesus takes over the world,ruling over one sixth of the world,that fought against Jerusalem,that they will only recognize Jesus,and no other God,or religious figure,and they have to go up year,after year,to Jerusalem,to worship Jesus,and the lion shall eat straw like an ox,and animals will be tame,and gentle,towards people,and other animals,where a child can lead them,and people will not fight,and wage war,also there is a whole lot more prophesy that has to come to pass.

But although prophesy can pass,after the physical action passes,it is still a witness to the world,that God is true,and His word true.

So out of all the things we do on earth,to labor for the kingdom of God,telling prophesy,healing people,speaking in tongues,having faith,and hope,and love,charity,feeding people,and having knowledge of the word of God,when we are in heaven all those things will not be needed,and only love,charity,will go on forever.

But some people might think those things passed,because we do not see so much of them anymore,but we also live in a time,where there is not faith among a lot of people,which Jesus said when He comes back will He find faith,and hypocrites a plenty,which nothing is going to happen there,and a lot of people believing they passed,so nothing is going to happen there,and a lot of people not led of the Spirit,so nothing is going to happen there,and people not in the truth of the Bible,which there is a lot more of those type of people,than people in the truth,which means the Spirit is not working all that much,because of the condition of a lot of people claiming Christ.

The gifts are for today,for the operation of the Church,is the operation of the Church,and if they needed them back then,they would need them today,for we still witness,and tongues is a witness,God wants people to be healed,and the love Jesus showed while on earth,still applies today,there is still prophesy that has to come to pass,and we still have to have knowledge of the word of God,and faith,and hope,and charity,but those things will pass,not while we are on earth,but when we get to heaven,except charity,that will go on forever.

I don't want to be argumentative :0 but you stated "Unexplainable things still happen through prayer," what is a miracle
BUt something that cannot be explained by the natural that has happened by a supernatural intervention. And if Prayer can cause that then I would have to ask then, do you mean the kind of prayers that they did in the Old testament? and in the New Testament? The prayers that Jesus did and the Apostles did ? If the answer is yes then I would think that with Prayer today unexplained things still happen by prayer and they are called by some Miracles as stated in the bible :)

Haha, that is the question though. :D VVhat is it that you believe? VVhat you believe has been put in a category, of either cessationism or continuationism. One believes the gifts are for today, and the other believes they have ceased since the time of the apostles.
