Yesterday was bench day.

Bench, incline bench, flies, and rows.

Today was mow the lawn and plant the vegetables day. Jalapenos, cilantro, bell peppers. I'm gonna have to figure out what to do with the tomatoes. I think I'll have to build planters...

I have a question. I think I suspect I know the answer, but I am not sure. I have not yet gone on the internet to search out an answer.
Thought I try here first.
So I have run countless races when I was in my forties. Never before that, although I did train and run in my later teens and twenties.
I became a vegan 23 years ago, and when I did, I stopped body building and lost about 40 pounds of mostly muscle.
When I ran in my teens and twenties, I rarely timed my miles, I just ran.
I once did time myself, and maybe that was about a 6 minute and 20 second mile running as fast as I could, if my memory is right.
When I was running in my forties, and I was in great shape, the fastest I could run a mile was in 7:10. I just chalked it up to being older.
But I also wondered if having such a low level of muscle contributed to a slower time, as opposed to when I was younger. You need muscles to move your body.
So I have been lifting weights for over 6 months, and I have increased my weight by 15 pounds, most of it, if not all, lean muscle weight. I am about 30% stronger then 6 or 7 months ago.
Also, I know sprinters are very muscular. I am assuming that helps with their speed, if maybe not with their long distance

My question is this? Will the extra weight slow me down? Or will the increased strength in my body, my legs, my back, etc manifest itself in faster times?

Does anyone know?

Extended cardio (roughly over 30 minutes) starts to make your body burn muscle.

You can see the body types of runners. The long distance guys look like they have almost no muscle at all while the sprinters are very muscular.

If you are trying for marathons you don't want to look like a body builder.

If you are trying for sprints you want really thick legs.

You just have to decide. Because, apparently, you can't have both.


I think the difference in times between long distance runners in their teens and twenties vs. runners in their 40's is the difference in cardio and lung capacity. All of our cardio and lung capacity potential is greatest when we were younger...

Sad to say... I probably won't ever be able to run that 4:55 mile I hit when I was 18...

So I am thinking maybe something in the middle. I am not looking to run another marathon. Probably not more then 8 miles.
After the around the 8 mile mark for most people they start to ravage their bodies and you really get into body mass and muscle mass breakdown around that point.'
Running marathons is actually not healthy in some ways.

So it seems to me your saying that I will get faster with more more muscle...

In the 5-8 mile range the extra muscle and strength should benefit you in every way.

As far as being vegan, I don't know anything about that. I've always been the exact opposite of a vegan. I don't consider it a proper meal unless there is meat in it.

Squat day/ leg day today.

Squatted 385 x2 at the end of my workout. I feel really confident I could squat 405 1 time. I will probably try it at the end of squat day next week.

What did you squat today?

Awesome. I don't do squats too often, but the most I've attempted is 320. Maybe I'll go for a PR tonight and see what I can do lol.

No way! Don't be so hard on yourself, there's truly no secret to it other than just putting in the time. You'd be surprised how much progress you make and what you're capable of once you start.

I can't squat near 400 at this point. I don't have access to my old records, but I did squat in the high 3's in my early to mid 30's. Around 390 or so.
Now, for one squat, 205 is it...

I tried and managed one rep of 350 last night. There's no way I could get close to 400 right now lol.

I'm really happy with my progress on squats and deadlifts.

Bench press I'm not happy with.

Does anyone have suggestions on increasing their bench?

Just got done with shoulders, back, chest, arms, and calves. I've been taking this new thing that supposedly improves recovery and helps increase strength and lean muscle. It's too soon to say on the latter, but it has definitely helped with recovery. I'll probably just do some cardio tomorrow. I tend to be a bit lazy on Fridays lol.

It's this thing called Clear Muscle. I did some research and it's received mostly positive reviews - A lot of people say they've been able to reach PRs and increase reps at max strength. It helps with recovery, decreases muscle breakdown, and increases lean muscle/strength. It's a form of HMB, but free acid.

I think it probably has better results with casual/new lifters than it would for those who are real experienced, but I'm going to try to give it two months and see if I get any real results with it.

I have heard doing dumbbell bench presses help, and so does just increasing tricep and shoulder strength.
