Am i the only one here that despises flowery talk????

What I consider "flowery talk" is basically using alot of flowery, cliche' phrases and words, stuff that may be true or may not be true, but whether it is true or not, it sounds good.

When one uses "flowery talk" they are usually appealing to a person's emotions rather than using logic or giving practical advice.

I wish I had a good example, but I will make one up.

"When you find the woman of your dreams, it will be hard to breathe without her. Her beauty will astound you and you will both pleasantly grow together, laugh together. True love is the most amazing thing in the world. It is the sunshine in the afternoon, the dew in the morning, the laughter of toddlers, her skin is as soft as a babies behind. Her smile is as wide as the sea and lightens up your day and ignites pleasant dreams. Blah blah blah blah.

Flowery talk

I hate flowery talk. I am interested in facts and data rather than someone trying to turn me into emotional mush with thier words. I wish some people would just be more blunt and get to the point instead of trying to dress everything and make it look like a verbal flower bed.

Am I the only one that feels this way. I mean why not just tell it like it is. Why u gotta dress all your words and paragraphs up like a christmas tree. lol.

Reality though. It's a cultural preference, not a personal preference. Want examples of flowery talk? Go look up books by Europeans. That's why I can't take LotR on paper, but loved the movies. Tolkien's writing drives me bonkers. Get to the point already! Same thing with Tolstoy, Jane Austin, and even Dickens. Get to the freaking point!

We're Americans. Look who we got -- Hemingway, Twain, Cooper. You can't use "flowery" for any of them.

So try not to take it so personally. Americans are just a bit more frank than Europeans. We Howl. They "do not go gently into the good night." (Which, frankly, still seems too flowery for me already. lol) It's our nature. Not a good trait. Not a bad trait. Just a trait.

Context Context Context :)
It depends what one is talking / writing about.

I remember a teacher once that accused me of cheating, because my assignment was in the same style as the book. She thought I had copied it letter for letter, when in fact I had read the chapter, put the book away, and then written.
I have no idea why she thought I'd copied it, because I most definitely don't have photographic memory :p

I understand if a person is making a speech or writing a book and they just don't want to bore the audience to death, so they dress up the words to hold their attention. I'm talking about people who for some reason just decide to talk that way. Lol. So annoying.

If I listen to dance music all the time, I tend to be up-tempo. If I listen to the blues, I tend to get a bit slower, but more deliberate. What we listen to or read most of the time affects us. I'm a get-to-the-point-but-long-winded-anyway person because that's what I read.

I suppose David nor Solomon liked flowery talk either. Oh and don't forget about
God :p

It's oranges verses apples, I suppose some people are more romantic, creative,
expressive than others lol.

Shall I compare thee to a summers day....

Psalm 96:4-9 NKJV
[4] For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
[5] For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens.
[6] Honor and majesty are before Him; Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
[7] Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples, Give to the LORD glory and strength.
[8] Give to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
[9] Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth.

Song of Songs 1:2-3 NKJV
[2] Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth- For your love is better than wine.
[3] Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth;
Therefore the virgins love you.

Ecclesiastes 1:5-6 NKJV
[5] The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, And hastens to the place where it arose.
[6] The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about
continually, And comes again on its circuit.

Job 39:5-8 NKJV. God speaking to Job
[5] "Who set the wild donkey free? Who loosed the bonds of the onager,
[6] Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the barren land his dwelling?
[7] He scorns the tumult of the city; He does not heed the shouts of the driver.
[8] The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searches after every green
thing.

Your right. But I feel like it is not always necessary and people that fall for flowery talk can be gullible. But I respect those who are poetic and their art. But if I ask someone for advice I don't wanna hear a bunch of mumbo jumbo, just get to the point. lol.

One brilliant, but slightly cold Saturday evening (well, it is here) WWJD gets the urge to troll her fellow CC forum mates. After spending some time at the beach in the shifting lights of sun and thick clouds, with the sunbeams reflecting from the merry waves, photographing the frolicing birds she returns to CC to make a long and elaborate post

Really? To be perfectly honest I think the books of proverbs has quite a lot of nonsense.
Considering how wise Solomon is said to have been, I find it a bit strange.

Well, the bible says that God blessed solmon with wisdom. I believe the bible knows what it is talking about. lol. But me personally when I read the book of proverbs it comes alive to me. When I read the book of proverbs I see the same things I see out in the world. I don't see it as nonsense at all.

Proverbs is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Better to pray for wisdom than anything else!

I guess it's just that he manages to make women sound like devils, that they are the ones that lure innocent men to sin etc.
and I never like it when people make it sound like no harm will come to you if you do X and Y and Z

wwjd_kitten. I disagree. Solomon talks about the wayward woman who leads a man into adultery and destruction yes. But he also talks about the cliche Proverbs 31 woman who is to be praised. Yes there are a certain segment of women not all that are scandalous, and deceptive. But that is not all women. And he mentions women in a positive light too like with the proverbs 31 woman. So there is balance there. I disagree.
