i just wanted to take something Sirk said in another context, and put it here to see if it fit:
hmm..
how many people now "support" Trump ((without actually supporting him)) because they are "afraid" of what would happen if a democrat wins the presidency?
how many people "support" him because they are afraid of terrorists blowing them up, or of Sharia law? because they are afraid of losing jobs to immigrants? because they are afraid of having their guns taken away or their taxes going up? because they are afraid of America 'not being great anymore' ? because they are afraid of the national debt?
hmm..
how many people support Clinton or Sanders because they are afraid of what they think will happen if Trump becomes president?
see, it occurs to me that when you no longer vote "for" someone, but are only voting "against" someone else, or "against" another party, or "against" an imaginary group of people that you ascribe every possible evil to that you can think of -- aren't you pretty much voting out of fear? if not hatred + fear?
& that's what we have: the two most untrusted and despised candidates we could find, going head to head ((plus a Jew with some 'crazy ideas' about helping the poor, that a lot of people don't take seriously, but nevermind him)). untrusted and despised by their own constituency - not just by their enemies. we're choosing sides because of hate & fear.
a relationship built on hatred is no relationship at all either. but that's the relationship a lot of people have with Trump: one based on fear and/or hatred of "liberals" in general and of Clinton in particular. and that's the relationship a lot of people have with Clinton: based on fear and/or hared of Trump; of sexism, racism, demagoguery and bigotry. apart from a nutty core ((filled with nougat?)) both candidates have a bunch of support whose basis is mostly nothing but hatred & fear of the other candidate.
