I had heard somebody describe really well a few years ago how to explain which OT laws we follow and which ones aren't neccessay. Unfortunately, I forgot.
So how would you explain it?
Some are obvious, like 'Thou shall not steal.' Yet, we do not keep the feasts, circumsize our children on the eigth day, and according to the apostle Paul, the Sabbath need not be observed.
So how would you explain to somebody who maybe confused about all of this? I know, 'love does no harm to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.' So is that all there is?

The ten commandments are nothing more than the embodiment of eternal principles that are rooted in the reality of God and man's relationship to God. The New testament, as well as the Old Testament, are built on these generalized principles which still stand as the foundation of man's relationship to God and man's relationship to man. Everything else within the Law of Moses were simply regulations and ordinances that instructed ISRAEL in how THEY were to honor these eternal principles.

Being under the New covenant all Christians, whether Jew or Gentile are obligated to obey whatever is given by way of command within the new covenant just as those who were once under the Old Covenant were obligated to obey everything given to them. But, as the Hebrew writer points out, the first covenant has been taken out of the way and NO ONE is obligated any longer to the ordinances and regulations of that covenant. Both covenants cannot be in force at the same time.

Yep, if you live out of love you fulfill the law.

Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

This is the universal law, that applies all through history, which this alone can judge every single person who has ever lived, whether they heard the word of God,or not.

Which this law is love is the fulfilling of the law,for it is always love is the fulfilling of the law.

Creation testifies there is a higher power, that created all things, and testifies of His attributes, that He is intelligent, wise, powerful, and love, for He provided food, and the means to make clothing, and shelter, and if He created all things, and is loving towards people, then people should acknowledge Him,and love people, which that alone the world has no excuse.

In the Old Testament it is a physical covenant, with physical blessings, which they could not live up to the moral laws, and laws of love, perfectly,so God had them do physical ordinances, things they could live up to,to be right with God,until Christ came.

That is the only way they could show their love to God,is by physical ordinances, for they could not receive the Spirit to do it on a spiritual level.

It too is love is the fulfilling of the law,but God added physical ordinances, because the Spirit could not be given to lead a person in a spiritual way.

Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

God took the physical ordinances of Israel out of the way, nailing them to His cross, because they were contrary to us,that they had no impact on us for a spiritual relationship with God,and the Spirit is given, which is the only way to have a spiritual relationship with God,so let no person judge you concerning those things, which means do not be persuaded by them when they tell you to keep them.

In the Old Testament the only thing that remains from the Old Testament,is the two greatest commandments, love God,and love people, and love works no ill towards their neighbor;therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Isa 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Isa 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

The sabbath day,is a spiritual sabbath by the Holy Spirit,a spiritual rest.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Ti 4:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Ti 4:5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

We can eat whatever meat we want to eat in the New Testament.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Love is the fulfilling of the law,and law we follow is being led of the Spirit, showing the characteristics of the Spirit, which the law then cannot touch us for prosecution.

Those written on our heart we follow...

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(Jer 31:33)

Yeah.. there are some things in the Old Testament that have continued thru to the NT because God did not place a limit on them. The 10 commandments is the bulk of what has continued.

The offering of animals as sacrifices.. levitical and mosaic laws were part of a system of service that did not work in the end. People thought they were being made righteous by the works of the law.. that sticking to the rules actually somehow saved them eternally.

The system of service was thru those sacrifices etc in levitical and mosaic laws, but the means of eternal salvation was the same as the NT.. except that people were looking forward to Christ coming rather than back at his death and resurrection.

The 10 commandments have undergirded our service to Jesus since the beginning with Adam and Eve. That has never ended.

WE don't follow any OT laws. We follow Christ. When we walk by the spirit we accomplish all righteousness of the law.

Yes, but then why do we need to read the bible?
Have you not been convicted on something in regards to this by reading the bible?

The OT laws are spiritual in nature.

That is the reason, and only reason, why no one practices animal sacrifices. It is finished.

People get confused when they think they can fulfill the law by the strength of their will and understanding. The only way the law is fulfilled is by coming to Christ by faith. And even then, it is Christ within that continues to fulfill it.

Galatians 3:2-3
[SUP]2 [/SUP]This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
[SUP]3 [/SUP]Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

2 Corinthians 3:6-8
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
[SUP]8 [/SUP]How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

No, it is Christ within who gives us understanding, knowledge and wisdom (among other things) to know how to do his will and thus fulfill the law.

That's the circular reasoning of the Judaizer.

We aren't under the law but after coming to Christ then you are back under the law...

Nope. Incorrect. We come to Christ because we couldn't do it. We stay in Christ because every time we try on our own we still can't do it.

Is there anyone in the synagogue that doesn't think they know Gods Will? Of course not. All the people who read the law think they understand Gods Will. And they think they can fulfill it.

If you were to read Matthew 5 and try to perfectly follow it you would find out, first hand.

That's why it's important to commune with our Lord Jesus and don't cut off The Holy Spirit, for that is how a disciple of Christ Jesus is shown what laws God did not do away with upon His cross.

The Ten Commandments should be obvious are all still in effect, for that's definitely about God's moral law, between us and Him, and between us and each other (five of the ten being spiritual, and the other five being civil).

It should be pretty easy to look at America's law system today and discover many of God's OT laws still in effect. Perjury is still punishable today, as laws against bestiality and incest are still on the books in the states (see 1 Timothy 1 which is Apostle Paul showing Timothy and us some things still against God and His laws).

Scripture says that the law has not passed away. Jesus said He did not come to set the law at naught but to fulfill the law. The law could never make man righteous but was given to make sin personal. Christ came to fulfill the law and to make Gods righteousness personal for all who believe and receive Him.

The law yields only death but Christ give life and that life eternal.

For the cause of Christ

Pamella, this is why you must always pray and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit who dwells within you if indeed you are Christ's.
The wisdom given to you in this thread can do no more than confuse you even farther, for it is the tares in with the wheat.
What I mean is there is sound biblical wisdom here, but there is also babel mixed with it that drowns out the wisdom.
A new born child of God will always seek for that which is right, for this is the way of the holy Father whose Spirit dwells within them, and through following the law of "Righteousness", they fulfill all the law.

Love thy neighbor is good, but one needs to know whom the Lord considered "Neighbor", for He also stated to love thy enemies, but sometimes we must love and destroy at the same time for our own preservation as the holy Father demonstrates by loving all His children, but having to cast many into the lake of fire in order to preserve righteousness throughout eternity.

The 10 commandments [first five are spiritual and the second five are moral] give outline to all that is righteous and by following them as best you can [for none are righteous, no not one], and loving the Lord as best you can is about all any can do.

Reading and studding the bible helps us grow in knowledge with understanding which brings wisdom [true wisdom] from above, but the Lord knows your heart and the depths of it.

Walk your walk of faith in peace, for the Lord of your salvation is your peace, your Sabbath, your rest.

God Bless

JTF

God's law was done physically in the Old Testament, but is now done spiritually in the New Testament. One example is they were physically circumcised in the Old Testament, but now spiritually circumcised in the New Testament with circumcision of the heart, performed by God during baptism (Colossians 2). We are no longer under Moses but under Christ (Romans 7:1-4)- which means we go by the New Testament.
