under Moses, the Jews worked for themselves six days, and set one day apart to cease from their own labors.
Jesus revealed to them that they should be doing God's work on the sabbath days - that simply refraining from dong anything was dishonoring the command. the Jews should have known this, because the priests under the law had been working every sabbath since the law was given; they did not dishonor it, because they were working not for themselves, but for God.
the sabbath, therefore, is not about "ceasing from labor" -- it is about ceasing from your labor.
Jesus left for our benefit - so that the Spirit could be sent, and to all men: first the Jew, and also the Gentile. the Spirit revealed to us that we should never work for ourselves - but on every day, work as though for the Lord. the Spirit teaches us to 'cease from our own labors' forever: on this day, "today," and in doing so to find rest in Him. for us now, who are not under law, and who serve by spirit, not by the letter, every day is as sabbath.
every day for us is peculiar, holy; set apart. we have all been made priests: and the priest did not do anything different on sabbath than they did on any other day; their whole lives were set apart: as are ours. therefore we uphold the law, though we ourselves are not under it by any means.
be convinced in your own mind. you cannot judge anyone over this, and no one should allow themselves to be judged over it.
