I was reading the Bible the other day and I came across Matthew 6:7 (AMP) that says "and when you pray do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words." what does God mean by meaning less repetition?

I lost my dog 11 days ago and I've been repeating the same thing over and over again, that God would restore my dog and all her puppies back to me and thanking him for restoration. Is this meaningless repetition?

You may look below and it may be clearer to you. You may notice that part of verse 9 is
"This, then, is how you should pray:" You may notice that I have changed the order to help.

Matthew 6:

7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

Matthew 6:

5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Meaningless repetition is used today in many religions, "chanting" being very common. Since God says don't offer meaningless statements repeatedly, he obviously won't listen to those.

Asking what you did concerning your dog is meaningful, and such a request would delight God to answer happily to.

In fact, God wants us to keep legitimate requests active, repeating the same request, to keep asking. That isn't for reminding God about it, but to exercise your faith at least in one simple request. If you give up then you run the risk of not even recognizing the answer from God. So we are to ASK.

Ask
Seek
Knock

Asking begins a prayer of request, like "Please help me find my car keys."
Seeking continues the request by being guided in searching for the keys.
Knocking amplifies the total request by showing persistence of faith, that you will not give up
until the keys are in your hand.

If any part of that is ended, faithlessness presides, and the searcher is on their own. If we want God involved, it must be done his way. He will let you search weeks without success until you ask him, perhaps knowing you will need supernatural wisdom to finally remember where those keys could be, in the refrigerator in the bag containing the hamburger.

[FONT=&quot]Mt 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.[/FONT]

I thought it was apparent that if one didn't overcome their sin nature against the LORD by the Gospel of Christ then "for they think they will be heard because of their many words" would fit the description for those who follow the Gospel of Paul holding all unrighteousness as sin since that would include breathing seeing that falls short of the glory of God too.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
John 9:31

10 hail marys that's meaningless repetition.

Like the catholic hail Marys I also think of the Jews standing at the wailing wall...

Matthew 6:7: "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words"

Matthew 15:8-9: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

Isaiah 59:1-2: "Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear"

The unsaved who are bound to a religion tend to pray vain repetitions, and the scriptures say their hearts are far from Him.

The jews in that picture are just talking to the air. He does not listen to the vain prayers of unbelievers, unless the person is praying for salvation. Once the person is saved they then have access to God through Jesus.

Reciting the Lord's prayer over and over again is meaningless repetition just as Jesus said in Matt 6:7 NOT to do and yet many have been taught to repeat the Lord's prayer which is really the prayer for the disciples to pray in the time they were living in.

Now, we can learn great principles from it but to repeat it monotonously is not profitable. It is just a religious ritual.

One of the many lies of hyper grace.

Wow what a false message....hopefully God's children recognize that it's a lie.

God listens from all His beloved children even when they fall short of His Glory. He wants to hear prayers about anything even if we feel, unworthy. Christ blood cleanses is from sin and makes us worthy not our own actions.

One of the many lies of hyper grace.

Do you two have to pinch and poke each other in every thread?

Doesn't it get old after a while?

If you repeat words without thinking about it or really meaning them, then that's vain repetition....doesn't matter what the words are.

Do you have to pinch an poke me every time I expose one of satan's lies? GOD will hold you accountable for opposing the truth. Hyper grace teaches that the lord's prayer is not meant for new covenant believers. That's pretty serious.

One of the many lies of hyper grace.

Nonsense....We are to interpret all scripture in the light of who is being spoken to at the time in which it was given. It's called "context". We are also to interpret all scripture in light of the finished work of Christ.

For example: This verse says that anyone who has ever sinned is blotted out of the book. But is this the ultimate truth? No, when you factor in the finished work of Christ.

Exodus 32:33 (NASB)
[SUP]33 [/SUP] The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.

Every bible scholar says to always look at the context and in the historical setting.

To look at the "who is being spoken to", "what is being said in context", the historical setting it is being said". Another very important one is to look at what covenant is being in effect. Jesus' New Covenant did not come into effect until He shed His blood and died for us and then rose from the grave.

There are dozens of websites that talk about taking scriptures in context and in historical setting.

You have twisted what was said. Grace believers say that certain elements of the prayer have been fulfilled already because of the cross.

For example. "Your kingdom come. Your will be done". The kingdom of God came when Jesus was raised from the dead and now the kingdom is inside us believers. Jesus said the kingdom is near you and then He said - it will be "in" you talking of His finished work.

Grace believers say that we can learn much from the prayer as it reveals the Father's heart to look after us.

The other aspect is that now our debts are forgiven us because of the cross. We forgive now because we have been forgiven. ( Eph. 4:32 Col.3:13 )

It's a response from our heart that has been forgiven. It is not a requirement for forgiveness as has been erroneously taught altho with good intentions.

The other thing to consider is that Jesus at the end of His ministry just before going to the cross said that "in that day" you shall ask in My name. The Lord's prayer does not have asking in Jesus's name because He had not gone to the cross yet.

John 16:23-24 (KJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

[SUP]24 [/SUP]Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

I understand that this goes against our religious beliefs we have had from our former teachings but in reality the prayer was to be a transition prayer from the Old to the New Covenants and in it we can glean many beautiful truths about the Father.

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Mat 6:9

I have looked at that in a way and offer. It’s not the repetition that is vain but more the order or manner . One vain prayer by taking the name of another god other than God our father in prayer is what makes it vain.(empty)

Seeking after a disembodied worker not seen in a hope the prayer could be answered is reserved for our Father in heaven the unseen faith principle.

If we pray after another manner then the request is vain .For instance the Catholic pray in vain every time they request one of the legion of patron saints (3500 and rising) as workers with familiar spirits.

The scripture informs us it is because there is no light of God word so they would be seeking others in vain even the first time.

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isa 8:19

Again it’s the manner called "this manner" meaning one. And not manners as cafeteria style. Who is on the menu today .What do we need accomplished? A lost dog? Seek after the disembodied spirit of one called saint Anthony set aside by the Pope that is in charge of the lost on found if you lose your pet or whatever.

It is simply a way of by passing our Father in heaven (usurping his authority) in exchange for one called father on earth .It applies to all the pagan religions of the world. They do not speak according to the word as the light unto their feet and a lamp unto the path.

I would think as far as repetitions crying out to our father could never be to many times. He is the one that can give us a peace that surpasses all human understanding.

Those who do seek after other manners only show where their heart is. They have received their reward I believe when God sends a strong delusion so that they can believe the lie.

I am hoping you find your pet. Keep crying out.

'You lost your dog because the dog ran away?

I am just quoting the NT scripture.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners

John 9:2-3
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

You missed this part of his post then?

So focused on "exposing Satan's lies" you let a camel through.

Repeating, 'I am healed" over and over again is meaningless repetition, when one is not healed. That's just a form of auto suggestion, self convincing or hypnosis. It is better to simply pray, "Lord Jesus, please heal me".

There is so much that is meaningless repetition but believing God for what He has promised it not meaningless as real faith has a "voice".

The reality is - are we really believing or mimicking we have seen others do? There is a work of the flesh and a work of the Spirit - outwardly they can look the same but God looks at the heart. For it is with the heart that man believes.

Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)
[SUP]1 [/SUP]
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Luke 1:45 (KJV)
[SUP]45 [/SUP] And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

John 20:29 (NASB)
[SUP]29 [/SUP] Jesus *said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed."

2 Corinthians 4:18 (NASB)
[SUP]18 [/SUP] while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
