I was reading the Bible the other day and I came across Matthew 6:7 (AMP) that says "and when you pray do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words." what does God mean by meaning less repetition?

I lost my dog 11 days ago and I've been repeating the same thing over and over again, that God would restore my dog and all her puppies back to me and thanking him for restoration. Is this meaningless repetition?

No, that isn't meaningless repetition. It means something to you, doesn't it? Meaningless repetition is when you are trying to trick people into thinking you are a caring Christian by praying long, long prayers.

Religious things?

Either of us could list at least thirty on a notebook.... starting with "Every eye closed, and every head bowed", and perhaps ending with making sure we end our prayers with "In Jesus' name, Amen."

But if you truly believe it, there'd be no need to repeat it over and over...is my point.
Repeating something doesn't make it come to pass.

Remember that story Jesus told about the widowed woman who kept going to the cold hearted judge and crying, "Grant me justice against my adversary." She literally vexed the judge by repeating her request over & over! The judge said to himself, "Even tho I don't fear God, I'll do what she asks. Otherwise, she won't shut up."

And Jesus concluded with, "Don't you think Father God will bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?"

In other words, if a heathen judge can disperse mercy, how much more our loving Father! I say to the Lord all the time, "Your Word says (such and such) and I believe what you said, God. You're the only truth I know!" And I will repeat that word over & over till the cows come home. God is faithful. His Word is faithful because Jesus is the Living Word.

Meditate on it, certainly. But, I don't think chanting it numerous times in a row does a thing.

some have certain prayers such as the Lords prayer, they like to do a certain number of times every day. a form of discipline for themselves and praise and worship for the Lord.
thats what i was talking about and i always thought it was a good practice. i dont fully understand how chanting even works.

Charles and Frances Hunter? They had a book on 'inner healing' taking a person back to their childhood to be freed from the past. Pop Freud. Garbage, i'll stick with God's Word.

I don't know those people and never even heard of them. But apparently Willie has and learned about healing from them. It doesn't take an individual with perfect faith and perfect knowledge of the whole council of God's Word to be able to stand on the truth. Having faith as a grain of mustered seed is all we need.

Many Christians might not know it all., but God is pleased with faith. Just because one man has a more impressive bunch of letters after their name for their Bible knowledge doesn't mean he is a man of faith. We have to allow God to be God and every man a man. God doesn't require us to be fully grown up and wise before He grants our prayers of faith.

Another reason why we should not judge each other and get annoyed at each other. Each person is still learning and God gives much grace while we are on the path. If we don't always agree with each other that doesn't mean one is always right and one is always wrong. Man can't see the heart the way God can.

This thread has been super helpful. I'm getting a better understanding of the term " meaningless repetition." Many of us don't want to become complacent in our prayer lives as well as requests that only He can fulfill

Meaningless repetition as in we repeat ourselves? I had to chuckle at that.

Nobody fully understands the far reaching effects of altering vibrational frequencies. One thing chanting does is interrupt the normal flow of thoughts in your inner narrative. I don't know about you, but mine can be quite negative and self-focused, and needs to be interrupted. Any kind of singing, prayer, or positive feelings that I can focus on through music of any type is therefore beneficial. That is why I said God looks at the heart. I may be grooving to a chant that may not necessarily have been written to be directed to the God of my understanding, yet when I am listening to it, I am thinking about the God of the Bible and the love of Jesus Christ. This song just started playing in my line-up :D I hope you enjoy it :)

But she wasn't healed until she actually touched Jesus. It wasn't her repetitions that healed her. It was Jesus.

No, of course it was not the repetitions that healed her....that's foolishness.....it was her staying focused on Jesus and that He was the Healer that kept her going to receive what she heard about Him.

It's in the hearing of Jesus that faith comes and sometimes we need a boost for our minds that are so used to living from what we see. Unless I see it - I will not believe it...the Thomas syndrome.

As I said earlier some need to keep focusing in order to keep their minds stabilized as the battle is in the mind - and others can just speak once what they believe and walk away like the Centurion - which Jesus said had great faith of which no one in all of Israel had exhibited this kind of faith.

Mark 5:27-28 (KJV)
[SUP]27 [/SUP] When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

[SUP]28 [/SUP] For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

And I chose to be free of TMJ.

I don't personally believe in this "inner healing" thing that takes people back to their childhood either. I believe that we are new creations in Christ and we are not under any generational curses..etc. There are generation curses - I just don't believe it them. I believe in what Jesus did on the cross and resurrection.

But for me to throw someone's teaching on healing out because of that they had taught on the inner healing thing - this is just spiritual ignorance on my part.

We need to learn how to eat the hay and spit out the sticks when we listen to teachers. If they go outside of their gifting - what the Lord has anointed them to teach on - all sorts of things that are not consistent with the finished work of Jesus can be taught.

Anyway - that's my view on it..

Anything spoken apart from faith is vain repetition.
Even if you only say it once? Haha. Well, I disagree with what you have said. When I cried
out to God for help I did not have faith, and yet He responded, and transformed my life.

and you, knew the meaning of scripture, the first time you read it. lol(to everyone)

for example.
the truth, dose not stop being the truth, no matter, how many times you quote it.

I know God's not hard of hearing. I know he doesn't withhold anything good from his children. I don't understand why he answers the way he does nor do I understand his timing. I do know that reminding myself of his promises and repeating his word strengthens me and gives me hope.

Jim Minker, the precious man who has been my spiritual mentor and dear friend for over 10 years passed away a month ago today. He was diagnosed with ALS a year & a half ago. All of his family & friends prayed for his healing during that time. I was sure God would deliver him because I've never met a more Christ-like person in my entire life. Jim was a faithful minister, a worship leader and a beloved friend of so many people who he helped get set free in Christ.

When my beloved friend left this world last month, I was shocked that God took him. I cried for days in grief and anxiety. I kept asking God why. Then I went back to Jim's online website where all of his life-filled lessons are posted. His last entry was titled "Christ and him crucified". He wrote:

Paul claimed to know nothing among the believers except Christ and him crucified. Was he referring to a crucifix? If not, did he imply that Christians should always keep the events of his death at the forefront of their minds so as to curb their sinful desires? I’m thinking that many avoid this suggestion because of the weight of guilt it brings. But the true meaning has nothing to do with bringing a focus upon his death, but rather a demand as to the true nature of his life. In other words, since Jesus Christ cannot be recognized according to the flesh, knowing Christ crucified means that true understanding is only found on the other side of the cross. And so I think we have a lot of fleshy explanations that also have to be put to death.

**********************

The greatest lesson I learned from Jim was to be real with God and myself. I am in Christ, he is my identity. My flesh doesn't get it and never will. But I have the mind of Christ given to me and I know he is faithful and will never fail me. I repeat his word over & over to remind myself of that.

Not talking about persistance.
I'm talking about those who think that repeating a saying or confession over and over will bring the needed results.
That's mindless repetition.
There's a difference when you spill your heart out in petition. IOW, God is not a computer, 30 hail Marys and zingo.

I was simply throwing up a red flag on the Hunters. Take it or leave it.
Perhaps we should learn how to do the miraculous from the antichrist...he will be full of them...

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 KJVS
[9] Even him , whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, [10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

So what now?...centering prayers, focusing? What happened to the sufficiency of God's Spirit working through His Word?

I wonder if saying the Lord's Prayer once a day could be considered a meaningless repletion?
If you say it mindlessly, it is vain. If you repeat it mindlessly it is vain repetition.
If you repeat it savoring it in it's meaning each time, it is not vain.
