An important things for W10 users:

You need to install .net framework at least version 4.5. Many older programs work with that, and both W8 and W10 don't come with it standard unless you select the option on the disc using a program like NTlite.

Also if you're a gamer, old games won't run as smooth without direct X 11 rollup update June 2010. It makes old games from even 2005 like NFS Carbon run smoothly with no hiccups/jitter and good graphics. If you need a link to the rollup update for direct X let me know.

You can actually turn it on/off in Win 8.1. As it's included in the install just switched off so to speak.

This has the option to turn on .net framework 3.5 and 4.5 "advanced services"

After rebooting it may be best to upgrade the 4.5 to 4.5.2 then to 4.6.1 ( I believe 4.6 is the latest but unlike other windows features it's not backward compatible that's why I say have 3.5 installed first and roll up each one from there.)

For your older games to run smoother I definately recommend this direct X roll up update.....

For all these download the offline installer as the "web installer" is slow and takes forever to complete.

Cool, if you play games prior to 2010 like Fifa or Need For Speed I recommend using the direct X link. It will install the older version of direct X and make the games play smoother.



I believe the direct X download also installs these redistributable packages.....they help with games also.

All this usually comes packaged with the games that need them though.

True, but sometimes windows 8.1 doesn't work well with games that are before W8 came out. Take for example madden08 a game i play, came out in 2008 way before W7, W8, and W10. Without direct X, the game jitters badly and doesn't even show player numbers etc. The version of direct X 12 that Windows 8 comes with is great for newer games but not older ones. This direct X roll up update fills in the back end of direct X by not replacing it but adding to it so that older games are compatible.

I was on the fence with this, but I just finished the upgrade. I actually like it. It looks nice. All of my stuff is still there, files.. background the same.. everything. It seems to be a bit faster and everything is much easier to access now, which is great. I haven't played a game with it, but I will do that tomorrow.

Well... I caved. Curiosity killed the cat and I installed it. First impression (after only 2 hours) is it's not so bad. Time will tell.

Well that didn't last long. Had to take my first venture into the new task manager to kill a crashed program.

I don't really have any complaints. The only issue I had was playing SWTOR. The lag was crazy. I had to go in and mess with some settings and things with the firewall... add new rules, etc. And then I had to turn off the game dvr in the XBox app. But it's working fine now. It's only been a day, but I don't regret the upgrade.
