Hi folks,

I play the alto and soprano saxophone.

I was thinking of trying out the claranet and wondered if it is any easier/harder to
learn how to play, blow, the embrouchure, fingering etc.

I know the fingering is different.

Any thoughts?

Beats me. I just load a new instrument in my computer and play it with my EWI USB instrument.

Okay, serious... I used to play tenor sax, until I figured out I could learn keyboard and (keyboard + computer) play a whole lot of different instruments. If you switch from sax to clarinet everything will be different except how you hold your mouth... and of course the way music works in general will still be the same.

Having said that, "the way music works" is a large part of learning to play the saxophone so if you want to learn to play clarinet as well it should be relatively easy.

I never played sax. But in 8th grade my gf let me borrow her clarinet for the summer. I came from trumpet and it was still pretty easy to learn.

I've learned how to make stained glass without any skill related to it before trying. I learned how to garden knowing I killed even air plants. I learned how to write a novel with a background in business writing.

If you want to learn how to do something, why should lack of knowledge or opposing knowledge stop you? Unless you make a living playing the sax, I see no reason why you can't try the clarinet. And the only reason I think it would be too hard if you're making a living on the sax is because you might get confused between new info and old info right smack in the middle of working it. If you want to learn something new, you're never too old. (Especially since you're still a kid. lol)

BTW, I struggled greatly writing fiction, but I never lost the business writing skills.

I'd rather you learned how to play the cello.

I wanna learn how to play the cello. Ive played several different string instruments so it would probly be pretty easy for me : p

Sadly I dont have much to add to this thread : / Though Id imagine that playing a brass instrument would be really helpful with moving to a woodwind? Id go for it.

We used to have a good cello player in my church. She was a lot of fun to listen to.

Ha ha your all so funny in a good way!

If I take up the claranet then I would want to get to a level good enough to
play in the worship team or church groups - rather than just squeak and squawk along
for the fun of it.

I played flute for several years but always wanted to try the sax, so ended up teaching myself
that. It was harder than the flute and took much longer to get to a performance based level.
But lots of fun, I've played it for nearly 20 years now.

Some say the claranet it easier than the sax, some the other way around. But the claranet has
certain advantages it has a greater range and is lighter and easier to carry around also cheaper.

Ive heard it can be harder to adjust to though due to the lay out of the keys and no finger
pads. But on the other hand some on interweb say it's easier to keep in tune so needs less
work in that sense. But you need a bigger mouth (no comment).

Ps I like the cello too! But it's basically just a massive guitar! :p In fact the saxophone
family and string family go very well together they have a similar woody tone.
Have played duet with a cello while I played the alto sax.

I did play guitar ages ago, along with keyboard and piano accordion.
Also tried the oboe. Oh my goodness has anyone ever tried the oboe, that is just an
instrument of torture! Ever wonder why there are few oboe players? It's because they
all bust a gut and their eyeballs pop out!

I really would like to try something else and am hankering after a claranet, was wondering
if others had tried it. - ugly do you still play?

I suppose I could upset the neighbours and get a drum kit, I've tried the drums at church!

Wow just been looking them up on the interweb
apparently you can get small, medium and large bore ones, I wanted to play it
not shoot someone with it!

Although if I play badly I suppose I might get shot!

level you want)

It's very similar based on most of my sax friends also playing clarinet in the wind ensemble. It's probably even easier to pick up than trombone to baritone.

He says as if playing any instrument comes easy to everyone.

(Absolutely zero musical talent here. I can't even play the kazoo well. lol)

I don't have long enough arms for the trombone. :p
