what is a word of knowledge for?

no purpose to this that I can see

I have had things pop into my head that are true and I had no way of knowing...don't think they were words of knowledge though

some people are just naturally more sensitive than others and there is always the chance it was a different spirit

everything supernatural does not mean it was God even for Christians

I would ask, what was the purpose? did it serve a purpose? sure, you are thinking of it 10 yrs later...but to what purpose?

here's one and it's true

years ago, while a teenager, I was at the sink doing the family dinner dishes (chores) and my brother was at the table doing his homework. I was thinking of asking him something and as I turned to ask it, he, without looking at me, answered the question that I NEVER asked.

of course at that point, he turned around with big eyes and I stared back...and somehow, there was a transference of my thoughts to him. I have other stories like that.

do I think that was some special moment with God's stamp on it? no I do not. do I think God knew? Yes I do

my answer, is simply to pray that nothing that is not of God would work through or around me...cause believe me, I have stories a-plenty but I don't go around thinking it is a special anointing or God...I think that some people just have a natural affinity for that sort of thing....

if there is no purpose to it, then I don't see it as a word of knowledge

is it something out of the ordinary? maybe for some and maybe not for others

the other day my husband was saying something and looking for a word and I supplied it...he was surprised, but being my husband he should be used to it LOL!

this is one reason why, when I see all these threads on the supernatural and dreams and visions and prophecy, I really just kind of take them with a grain of salt

because I have had so much of this kind of stuff in my life, I have asked God to just stop it. don't want dreams, visions or special events...just the reality of knowing Him and if He wants me to know anything else or if I need to know, then so be it

but far too many folk want supernatural

I caution against it, but go ahead...you will get what you want

Thanks for your replay and input. Only your last sentence sounds a bit mean... Or maybe its me that's preceiving it that way?

I agree, that's why im wondering what it could be. It was pointless and I think for it to be a word of knowledge it would have a meaning. And I would know it. Or God would let me know? For God is not the author of confusion. But maybe if I said hes name the conversation we had would be different... Who knows....

For example:

A few years ago I helped a friend of mine go true a difficult time in her life. She was questioning God and was depressed. We always talked for hours and it helped her. I made time to listen to her and the give her advise and help her to find to Lord again.
I concidered her my friend. And she overcame her problems.

Then when I went to a very difficult time. (Total burn-out with depression) I expected her to be there for me as I was there for her. But she wasnt. Guess she had no time. I said to myself. Im not gonna make an effort to help her anymore, because when Im in need shes not there for me.

Then I heard a voice, not a voice in my mind but in my heart (difficult to explain the difference) it said : " you did this for me" (helping her) I knew it was God that said that.
So I deceided that I would still be there for her even if she would not be there for me in difficult times, because God wanted it.

our relationship with God is what we would call supernatural...but in reality, it is natural

it is mankind in their fallen state that has lost all God once allowed us to have

I believe some remnant of that may remain with some people and of course God can give any gift He wants to any person

the most important thing to have, before all these 'spiritual' things that may or may not happen, is discernment

see, another problem I have with folks telling you 'oh yes it was God', ...is that they don't know you from a hole in the wall..same applies to me

people who know you, people who are Christians, might be able to confirm whether or not you have a gift that God has imparted to you by His Spirit. someone who does no know you and who has no knowledge of you, cannot really say oh yes it was God

I have had interaction with both sides of the spiritual realm and that is why I am super cautious. I never asked for any of it not everyone appreciates being told anything about themselves that you had no way of knowing. I seldom talk about what I have experienced and wonder why some, and I don't mean you, just go on and on and on about their visions and dreams...drawing more and more attention to themselves with no actual use to what they think they experienced.

God does not tickle our imaginations and provide spiritual experiences for our entertainment. I don't care who says He does and I don't care who thinks He does.

you just recently posted asking for help regarding your brother-in-law...not to be mean, but if you had a gift such as some are ready to say you have, don't you think you might have received a word from God on what to do? fine to ask others for conformation...and if it is something major, a person should do so, but otherwise? not so sure about what is actually going on with you

Thanks for your replay and input. Only your last sentence sounds a bit mean... Or maybe its me that's preceiving it that way?

no Angelique...that was just a general statement because I know that basically no one will listen to me anyway

in no way would I want to hurt you...and that goes for my second post as well

Thanks Lauren :-) I do value your input!

Ive had that a few times especially when people ask me for their age and stuff. I found that through those experience I was able to grow in faith.. Of course it didnt do a lot insignificant things besides when ppl ask ''how do you know this'' I can respond with ''The Holy spirit told me'' Before God can use you in a bigger ministry he often just starts small :) It builds faith on both sides :) God bless you. Never take for granted what God gives. It always has a reason.

Precisely, it also boosts confidence in the accuracy of what you are hearing and the boldness you have to speak out what the Lord is revealing to you to minister to another.

lol well the prophetic theme for this year was ''to get out of your comfort zone'' so it fits very much. Ive seen more and more that (unlike some ppl tend to say it) God doesnt just throw you anywhere without preparing you. He goes step by step. Some need milk and some need oil to keep the armour from rusting :P . Just of course it is on us if we let him lead us. You can only bring a horse to the water, you cant make it drink. Im always happy to see people that use the word of knowledge and truly step into it and not just hold back :) God bless our OP! :D

As we mature in our faith, we become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leadership. I often use this example.

My normal commute to and from work covered 60 miles. I would pass several people each day who were asking for food, work, a drink, or a ride. Most of the time, I continued past them and didn't even think about it. Occasionally, I would pass by one and the Holy Spirit wouldn't let me continue until I stopped to talk the one waiting. Every time, I had the resources to meet the need of the one waiting. I don't travel much today, but occasionally the Holy Spirit gets me to drive to the store. When he does, there is always someone to help on the trip.

Angelique, you answered the Holy Spirit's guidance by taking the time to talk. The Holy Spirit confirmed his guidance when the person told you his name. Listen to that voice, let the Holy Spirit lead you. The more you listen, the more often He will use you.

Lauren I do value your input !! And thanks for taking the time to replay! And I agree totally about your point in discerment. When I pray I know its God. I get answers in my heart, and it is in line with the bible.

But I never experienced something like this before, this way. It just happend that's why I was wondering what it could be. Im not sure.

About my brother in law. I prayed about that too. I started the topic because I value the input of my Christian brothers and sisters. It was a confirmation.

Why are people so quick in accepting this story as true?

I do not believe this story is true. Why would God give us just a name of a person? God does not work in that way.

It sounds more like a made up story, or it could be Satan trying to deceive you into thinking this happened this way. Our memories have a way of changing the truth over time.

I would believe it if God told you to bring the Gospel to this person, but i do not believe you were hearing God speak to you telling you his name.

We are to test the Spirits to see where they are coming from.

He does prepare us, most definitely. I recall my father teaching my brother and I how to learn to ride a bike (without training wheels), for the first time. VVe sat upon the seats of our bikes up on a hill. I suppose you can guess where this is going? Swoosh! He pushed me down the hill and I learned right then and there how to bicycle. I learned on my first try, I didn't want to fall. haha I remember the peddles going round super fast and so I just tossed my feet into air not able to keep up but I steered that bike safely down the hill.

In the same way, I think the Lord does toss us in the deep end, having at least given us the basics. He is still there ever present to share His wisdom, as we learn to balance what He has shared with us with action. It seems He likes us learning on the spot too, to go outside our comfort zone and trust Him. He likes us to be in faith.

I was on a holiday in Africa and a out of the blue a african man came up to me and asked me if I knew his name. I did not know this man, but I heard the word "backery" in my mind. It was very clear voice and not my own thinking voice.

I told the man I did not know his name. (I did not know the man) He than said to me his name was "backery" The same name I heard in my mind!!!

The question i would be asking myself is
'why would a man who i have never even seen before in my entire life come up to me and ask me if i know his name?'

You were on holiday, and you didn't share the gospel with him, and it doesn't sound like you two even mentioned God at all when you talked. So i don't know why you would think it might be a '
word of knowledge.'
The Spirit doesn't seem to me to have '
meaningless polite small talk with strangers' as part of His agenda.
The way you describe this it doesn't sound like you were in the spirit or being led by the Spirit at all, & i don't think that God just sort of spreads out meaningless supernatural power at random.

Do you believe in any form of telepathy?
In shamanism?
What if the man himself was projecting that name into your mind, and asking you to confirm if he really did have power over you or not?
What if he was a sorcerer & just kind of sized you up a bit?

Because i would start wondering if the power was a different spirit.
What was your spiritual life like at the time? Would you have even been able to answer that question 10 years ago, or even now?

Ppl like to preach tho that God just throws us into awkward situations though like you said we at LEAST get the basics before he throws us anywhere. Ive felt sometimes that he just puts me in places but then when I step back a step of my human mind and look up to God and clear my mind I see has been giving me what I need. Just we gotta keep walking in the spirit and not let circumstances blurr our minds. We may get on the bike but he tells us how to stop and push the paddles.. he doenst just put us on a bike and push us. Ppl just like to say that

This story is not made up, and it even hurts me that you would say something like this. In fact you are accusing me of lying and your questioning my integrity.

But I do agree with you with testing the spirits.

i do believe you -- but testing this Spirit, if it was from God, wouldn't it have glorified Him and caused you to at least mention Jesus Christ a little bit?

But it didn't, right? That's why i am more inclined to think it is something else. Not everything supernatural or 'spiritual' is from God; far from it.

((i wouldn't worry about being somehow tainted from the experience if it was not from God. Christ overcomes everything. & maybe like some suggested, in His perfect will He allowed such things take place for you to be prepared to accept other things later - though those things themselves were not by His own spirit.))

Yeah, its like He equips us but you have yet to use the equipment so when we step out there is this fear of the unknown. At least for me, currently.

I figured that just simply listening and doing what the holy spirit tells us to do is the best way to go lol. Just do what he says and see that u did the right decision :)

Its funny because its like the Lord is trying to make it clear to me that I hear Him. Even in the example of this thread, the OP can see that experience as a testimony to hearing from the Lord. In my own experience I have found the greatest fellowship with the Holy Spirit to be through tongues and interpretation, and so for me it is easier to do that than to simply quiet myself and listen for Him.

So, quite often people speak of hearing the Lord, I have felt that I haven't honed that down perfectly yet. However, in little examples like the OP, the Lord is like, "You do hear me, son." For example, in a board game you have to roll dice, two actually. VVell, in my mind I actually saw what the dice would be multiple times in a row. I would roll and see the exact number that was in my mind. It was like the Lord was revealing to me that I hear Him. Just now in thinking of it, I just realized its also referring to the prophetic. I knew before it happened, by revelation of the Holy Spirit.

Anyways, the Lord is preparing all of us and He trains us. He gives us the encouragement and exhortation that we need to walk out who He has created us to be.
