IMO Cracker Barrel is a racist name for a restaurant.

Think about it.
Yeah! What's up with that?

How about saltine crackers? White paint? Man, there is racism all over! This has to stop!

...does anyone know the name of the song that is played as an instrumental from ice cream trucks? LOL
Since I am an old, original Floridian, I happen to know the origin of that name. (Though the way it is used for the restaurant chain is different.)

Cattle have long been raised in Florida, and even shipped here for grazing. And the old "cowboys" who herded them used small whips that they wielded to make "cracking" sounds to get response from the cows. Hence, the name, "Crackers."

As the name is used in this case, however, it is referencing the large barrel of crackers (which got their name simply because they "cracked" when you broke them) that could be found in all General Stores of yesteryear for customers to enjoy nibbling on while they shopped.

As a matter of fact, this was a custom in many places. When I was a boy, I would go to the rear loading dock of a local bakery in the Summertime, and have lunch with the Black workers, (they preferred "Colored" in those days.). Set out on the dock, were two such large barrels. One contained loaves of bread that had not baked into the proper shape to be suitable for commercial distribution, and were discarded. The other was full of honey. Some of the best lunches of my childhood. We felt really privileged and cool to be eating there.

My sister, I can't help but notice your avatar and the thought that comes to mind while seeing it in this thread. Imagine if White and Black could coexist in the same manner as it does on a zebra.

gotta love zebras...well animals in general

God's patterns are so much prettier than ours

Or, as Paul McCartney sang... "like the keys on my p'yahno keyboard".....

I just thought it was humorous the way he pronounced "piano".... like he was British, or something...

How is it that anyone cannot understand that if you force someone to simply not "speak" certain words, (especially by threatening their livelihood) that you have NOT reduced racism......... You have only increased it a hundredfold. Now this man REALLY hates Blacks, even more than he ever did before.

Again, I bring up the all too real future we are creating for ourselves.... the "dog attack" I mentioned, where we have insured that someone who COULD have helped our loved one (and probably would have if we had been kind to them) will be guaranteed to turn their back and let the dog have at them.

God! You talk about stupidity. This is REAL cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It seems to me as though most people believe racism is something America has a problem with. I don't think it's as bad as it seems most of you think it is. Most people are not racist sure there are a few here and there. But that's the way it is with anything.

I do think that most white people accept blacks just as much as they do whites. I think the problem is that most black people don't think they are accepted. They think more highly of whites. I mean let's say a missionary goes to Africa and the people are all excited because it's the first time they've seen an "American" which is actually a white person. They think it's a privilege just seeing a white person. The thing is if I were to go, a hispanic, it wouldn't be looked at the same. I don't have a problem with that. I am who I am and God made me that way. I don't know maybe it's easier for Hispanics to accept everyone because we vary so much in color anyway.

My prejudicial buttons have never been pushed because of the color of a person's skin, but rather through their actions. Although, I do get somewhat disgusted at anyone, Black or White wearing their pants hanging down, and their butt sticking out. But, I guess that is actually an action.

Would that be considered prejudicial? I mean if it's based off of their actions how is that prejudice?

Racism is just a way of excusing problems.
If you want empathy for yourself, you play the racism card.
Unfortunately it also plays the other way, people who are racist can accuse a
group of playing the racism card to make them look bad while actually knowing
that is what happened.

I had a weird experience in a shop recently. A couple of kids, who had chinese
looks, a boy of 5 with a sister of 9. Because they looked different my brain
started thinking they must be behaving in this particular way because of their
race. I then looked at what I was thinking and thought, what rubbish. It was
just a 5 year old, bored and playing around, and a slightly more sensible 9 year old
playing along.

Now it made me realise how easy it is to slip into these feelings, without thinking,
because something about the situation says it is different and does not relate
to you.

Everyone of us could play this card, but we would fail everytime.

My daughter went to an african country to help out with a charity. She thought
the kids would be different, with a different culture and race. But they were just
kids, as cheeky and difficult as anywhere.

Racism is poison, it gives people voice and emotional justification when there should
be none.

Consider the fact that all of our various cultures have developed certain behaviors and characteristics that we can all readily identify........ especially in "other" cultures. Those are the kinds of things I have to admit I do react to..... and, over the years, I have come to expect of certain cultures and ethnic groups. This is a form of prejudice (pre-judging).

Most of us don't know that prejudice does not mean "to be against, or to hate, someone." It means that through either experience or perception, we have all come to expect certain specific behavior from certain groups.

I do it, you do it, we all do it. And if anyone says they don't, they will probably lie about other things, too.

There was a study done by psychologists who studied how people reacted to stereo types.

The idea was put up a picture of people and ask would they expect trouble from them.

The problem is in the news and general life if an image is linked to a certain behaviour pattern
you end of subconsciously being racist though not realising it. The down side is some of these
predictions are not necessarily racist but a statistical reality.

This is why I think the only thing that works is the racist opposite, actively be non racist.
Funnily my kids have a bigger friendship group from other cultures and racial groups than
the english. This is probably because of the other cultures, the best and most adventurous
make it to London, so the comparison is probably biased, especially if the more outgoing and
expressive is what you are looking for.

Just look at it right here on this forum.

If you have been here any length of time, you know very well that when you see the names of certain people putting up a post, don't you say to yourself "Oh, I know what s/he's going to say in response to THAT remark."? You know you do.

But, you also know that sometimes you are proven wrong.

That's probably because you actually know what that means, and what it originally advertised....

I want to pull those guys aside and say, so, you're looking for a boyfriend?

I believe that in our country, at least from times past that certain areas of behavior and respect
have always been expected...when this began to change to the point of dis-respect and unkind
behavior, that there simply is just no going back...

i truly don't believe that many people are ready to accept or believe what is truly happening
here in our own home towns, most news reports are trying so hard to obey what they are told
to do in these terrible situations, that they are not even allowed many, many, times to
identify the perpatrators color because of perhaps offending someone...

recently a white woman was out jogging and was viciously attacked, and
all of the local news did not identity the 'color' of the offender...so when the story came out,
how were his next victims supposed to be able to defend themselves or at be aware of his color?

this is not about a 'blame-game', it is about the reality of the situation and how to be prepared
to defend yourself...

This is but one small way "PC" is killing this country.

We are dead last in the nation when it comes to high school grads...dead last. It's a shame but a reality. They have done over our school system so many times but always point the finger at the teachers. Violence here is mostly in the black community black on black but always pointing the finger at gun control.
What's lacking is accountability. Grade school moms are very popular....babies making babies. It's a mess. Personally I've been looking to the Lord for answers on where to start helping I have such a compassion as I posted on another thread I lived in those communities. Back in the day being white I went and graduated from a 98 percent black school.
Best days of my life..had some throw downs here and there...one of my friends got shot in the neck but that was front page news then...not like now. Still have my Westside tat but the Lord pulled me out of that mess. I understand, at least I thought I did of what was and is going on but it's all changed...a true evil walks these streets. They kill you on a bet or just for fun...nothing racist about that. It's people in general just acting out what they hate most...themselves.

Racism is very much alive and well in the USA. A Government Chemist purposely falsified the drug tests results of Black people to be positive she was sentenced to jail time. Now I don't know the how's and the why's these people had to go to court or be tested to begin with. In any event it has nothing to do with the crime that she committed.

Racism is alive in America ..Blacks are 50 times more likely to assault whites than whites are to assault blacks. Black on white crime is a epidemic and needs to be addressed.

Uh.... that's not racism. Your intent in that post might be closer to being what racism really is.

"Female drivers under 25 have the highest accident rate." is just a statement of what you might believe to be true. Expecting a 23 year-old woman to be a bad driver is prejudicial. ("racism", as it were.)
