You asked a really good question. I think the question is all about honest representation--how honest should honest be? And do the rules change for someone "single" (and looking to attract other singles) vs. someone who is "taken"?
That brings up another question, one (I think) more important than WHERE the line is drawn. WHY is the line being drawn? Let's get down to the root of it, if one is deliberately making himself look better than he is in his avatar, what's the reason?

Of course there could be no real reason - I post a picture of myself from five years ago, let's say, just because I don't have one more recent and I can't be bothered to have a picture taken. But in the example of the shirtless guy chopping wood, you gotta think there was a reason. If not to get a girl, then he seems to have a real vanity problem there.

If you ask yourself "Why do I want to look like this online?" then the question of where to draw the line will I think usually answer itself.

It could be a mental thing too. I think people truly dont understand how damaging a body disorder can be. Or even if your just that insecure and self esteem. Even the littlist bit of attention can feel like the world if your suicidal. Even if its not for the right reasons or even you just the words sometimes can be so much help. Ik it doesntake semse bevause its jot really them but some people need to live in a little pretend world to just survive. Even tonight im just struggling to hang on. Id never post my own cause ik it wouldnt be accepted, yet i have people refuse to talk to me, be mean, say im catfishing etc etc for not showing. Sometimes its not evem worth trying to find someone who wont mins. Or maybe try they are at the breaking point and even just admitting they dont like how they look, or just the one more person rejecting themcause they wont show could be the last straw. Im deff not saying this applies to all cause of course it doesnt, but its another point of view and from someone with serious body issues.

Also sorry for crap typing. Im on my phone and bad anxiety so im shaking.
Hi DeepDistress,

I'm very sorry you're not feeling well and hope you feel better soon. :(

I totally understand what you're saying... But it's just my own person feeling that it's not an excuse to purposely deceive people, either. The person may not realize it, but acceptance based on lies is even more damaging.

You hit the nail on the head, Lynx.

I think motivation is the key issue here.

It's just my own personal opinion that lying for personal gain via attention or acceptance is wrong.

God calls us to be honest.

I know this is out of the blue, but I still think Miah was who she said she was.. (the supposedly young female pilot who was a member here)...because of one very significant clue... She had posted a picture of her table with her coffee and sunglasses on it and I think one of those makeup things that women carry in their purses and it looked like a nice candid pic and she wrote something like "getting ready for another day at work".

Well.. I noticed there were a few pages of paper in the pic that had writing on it which couldn't be read unless you zoomed in like 200%. I was wondering what it was and I saw that they were ICAO codes. Hardly anyone even knows what ICAO codes are, let alone has a printout of them next to their morning coffee unless they are a pilot, and not just any pilot... a commercial pilot. And it wasn't like she was trying to flaunt its presence in the pic because you had to zoom in real close to see what it was... Anyway, it doesn't matter now I guess.. :p
Zero,

Just for the record, and I can ONLY speak for myself, but in all the time I've been on CC, when there has been a rumor of a catfish, I have yet to ever hear of an instance in which someone was falsely accused.

In other words... if someone is said to be a catfish, there's a good chance... that they were a catfish. This is one reason why I've come to trust the mods here, and that they make their decisions for a reason.

Now, I'm certainly NOT SAYING AT ALL that if we hear that someone is a catfish, we should automatically believe it (there's probably a rumor going around right now that I'M a catfish, who knows.)

But the reason I'm saying this is because of the people you've mentioned you didn't believe were catfish... I knew of at least one person in each case who was being catfished by these said people.

And, I saw first-hand how much it utterly broke their hearts.

I thought it was the real Batman. :(

But on another note, I've actually busted quite a few people over the years for this lol. Some of it is body issues, disliking the way they look, wanting to be accepted, etc. One person said that they simply didn't trust anyone and didn't want to use their own photo at first, which for me, it's like why use one at all? It's even worse when they do these things and form friendships, relationships, etc. Imo, it's a character flaw. At the end of the day, there's no excuse for doing it.

I certainly understand where they're coming from, and I feel sorry for them.

But, after a lot of heartache in my own life from excusing people's lies, it's not something I'm willing to tolerate anymore.

The other interesting thing I always find about people who "exaggerate" their online representation is that:

1. They always choose the most beautiful pictures of the most beautiful people. Hmm. I mean, who ever heard of a catfish who was using pictures of not-so-attractive people?

2. They always make it sound as if they have the most prestigious careers, highest-paying jobs, and super exciting lives ("Sure, I can afford this $5 million dollar house and monthly trips to Hawaii! And I'm only 23!!") Why not just speak the truth: "I'm broke, I live on my parent's couch, and I work as a cashier." (For anyone who thinks that's an insult, I'VE worked as a cashier all my life.)

Everything is geared towards getting the most attention possible, and that right there speaks volumes about what their real motivations are.

I can't help but think... If catfish didn't want to be caught, they'd work at sounding more like normal, everyday people.

And if you're going to work that hard to sound like a normal, everyday person--you might as well just be your normal, everyday self.

It bothers me a great deal. Mainly because their are scam artists all over the Internet stealing strangers identities and try to scam vulnerable men and women.

Today I found out someone on here who I thought was legit isn't. At first I thought, well maybe he's to afraid to be himself, but his response to those comments was selfish in my opinion. He just thinks it's fine and dandy to come on here under a few different names and get attention. Well I'm glad we have some people on here who aren't as nieve as me and figured him out. Personally his comment, maybe he'll use two of personas as characters in a book was obnoxious. Oh how funny little Hipster comes on here and talks about his Volvo and his expensive houses and a bunch of other made up crap and let's see how many nice Christians I can fool. He did fool me and I think a few others too.

Good eye Bruce Wayne and Hello. Oh and to you Leon, grow up, what you did was rude and your attitude about it is not cool.

I don't want to brag, but I'm going to.. :p A long time ago I got accused by women of using a fake pic a few times. One even swore I got the pic from a magazine, but it was really me. :p I wish I could share the pic but it was lost when my old computer crashed.. sort of like Hillary's emails. Anyway... at least I have that to look back on.

I'm definitely not a cartoon, nor do I look like the guy in my picture. :D
Maybe some day I'll post my photo here, but for now, I deem it unnecessary.
