Who said anything about forced sorrow? If a person does not recognize their sin, confess it and repent of it... they are continuing in their sin and are on the hook for their sin even though the Lord has provided His Blood to be available to wash that sin way.
It's not like Christians should be the taliban and beat people in to submission... but we should teach God's Word, so i we are going to quote that the goodness of God leads to repentance, we need to also quote that Godly sorrow leads to repentance because God said that as well and it is part of the conversation.

No, God is not "making" people suffer.... He is simply allowing them to reap what they sow
Galatians 6:7,8
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Now way to get rid of that - Scriptures that speak of sowing and reaping - Genesis 8:22, Mark 4:26, Matthew 13:24, Galatians 6:7,8 and Romans 5:14-21 demonstrates how seedtime harvest causes things to produce after it's own kind whether it's good producing good, or evil producing evil.
Mankind is just too blind and stupid to obey the Lord and be led by His Spirit, sowing to the Spirit so we can reap life... instead, blind mankind be all about sowing to the flesh reaping corruption leading to destruction

Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

i think it's more than that and that its end result is connection. Connecting to the heart of God and the hearts of people around you. It's about giving and receiving love. One can "understand" and say sorry for something they have done done but Godly sorrow is not wanting to disappoint God or someone else because you love Him and them. Godly sorrow is both tender and based on connection and honesty.

Of course it's more than just stopping the sin.... the purpose of our existence is allowing the Lord to live in us and walk in us (2 Corinthians 6:16).
He created us to share Himself with us and who are we to not allow Him to have His way in our life?
