Well, stop expecting a man standing at the pulpit to know the word of God.

I had to go crack open my bible for this one so here it goes:

Read the book of Malachi chapter 2 where God speaks about his displeasure with how marriage and divorce is treated.

Look at Matthew ch. 19

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” 8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” 10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

Mark ch 10

Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them. 2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied. 4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” 5 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians ch 7:8-16

Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. 12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

You can argue with the law of man here on earth, but we can't quibble with the word of God.

Assuming this article is valid, many of today’s young people are content with living marriage free lives. I wonder if the ones who are getting married, may possibly be getting married at an older age, thus leading to a possible less likely chance of “got married to soon” syndrome? Would be nice to see some statistics on this though.

I think that the divorce rates are down because people are choosing to not get married. they are living with each other and not marrying. I also think that the divorce rates are down because costly court battles over child custody and spousal support and what not are hindering people from getting divorced. Now a days a man will be forced to support his ex wife legally even if they were only married for two days. If you apply for any kind of assistance through the state like food stamps or medical then the ex spouse is forced to pay alimony to the person applying first. Also people decide to stay married for tax breaks and other things as well..... I was in applying for medical for my husband and A guy was saying that the state made hi take his ex wife to court for spousal support and she was on social security disability like they would have taken even 20 bucks a month from her if they had to.

When the Japanese finally perfect those robot geisha women, the divorce rate will finally be zero. Oh that reminds me, I have to call Japan and get on a waiting list.

I had many of the same questions about this report...........THEN......I realized it was based on the RECORDED number of marriages in the US......Meaning, they did not compare the total number of marriages from year to year to determine how many people were getting married.......they only looked at those who did get married, and how many of them were divorced, and came up with the percentile reported.

This "percentile" is what they compared to years past..........so, it doesn't matter how many people did or did not get married, only of those who did get married, how many filed for divorce.

That made me feel a bit better about this.

As to the validity of the report, well, the information is there, and the person(s) responsible for compiling the statistics, and publishing the report, so it should be easy for anyone to search them and determine their credibility. :)

Concerns me a bit that folks would believe it was worse within the Church, given that those who are not in the Church, and not believers, lead a very non-Christian lifestyle, and it would seem to me this would lead to the greater percentile of them being divorced. (just saying)

There was a speaker on Focus on the Family today who expounded upon how
Eve was created differently than Adam and what this means hermeneutically...
it was a beautiful presentation and one I would highly recommend any listen to.
Part one was on today, so I am assuming part two will be tomorrow :)

Have you ever considered how God created your spouse? Dr. Walt Larimore examines
God’s creation of Adam and Eve, and explains how male-and-female differences are
revealed in the book of Genesis.

DIVORCE IS AN EPIDEMIC in USA!

These are all scary stats.......

Divorce rate was highest in 1980 before co-habitation became the norm.
Co-habitation climbed 900% in the last 50yrs.
Co-habitaters have a 30% higher divorce rate.
Christians divorce more than Atheists.

Did some "searches" about this statement of yours.

One thing that jumped right out at me was that the "reports" that were anti-Christian were mostly from Atheists Groups.

Another that showed is even when I found a Christian person from Dallas, I believe doing the "report," he did not have any way to validate that the people "surveyed" were ACTUALLY CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS, or............just "identified" themselves as such........as do millions of Americans who have NO PERSONAL relationship with God. THIS FACTOR is most probably the CAUSE for any REAL DATA that would reflect such an assertion to be true. Call 1,000 or 2.000, or 3,000,000 people in America and ask them if they are Christian/Jew/Muslim/atheist/whatever, and the majority will identify themselves as Christian because their Grandmother or some other person in their family went to Church, or their parents took them to Church.

In any event..............this assertion is suspicious at best

In essence, there is a vast chasm through which tainted data could pass through to skewer this assertion about Christians vs. atheists and their respective divorce rates........

just saying

Probably just about any statistician will tell you:
You can make statistics say whatever you want them to.

To me, it seems like divorce is an epidemic these days. I know lots of people who have been divorced. Whenever I tell someone that my wife and I have been married now for over 25 years and it's our first marriage, they look at me like I'm from Mars!
