Our traffic cops here are going to new lengths (or is it depths) to squeeze money out of motorists. At a police checkpoint a lady I know was fined for having a bag on the passenger seat. The offence was "overloading." Someone else was pulled over and then fined $20 for not securing the single butternut squash that lay on her backseat. I suppose the police message is this:"Road accidents during the festive Season tend to increase with a number of fatalities. Please drive safely and secure your butternut squashes or face the undiluted wrath of the law!"
More likely its a ploy to squeeze a bribe out of law-abiding drivers. For many of us, this went too far. So in solidarity with this unfortunate lady, some of us are each carrying a butternut squash "passenger" this week.

I'm told Santa is not coming back to my country this year so the kids are not going to be particularly pleased this Christmas. last Christmas the cops pulled him over and wrote him a massive ticket.
1. Apparently Rudolphs red nose should be white and must have the correct honeycomb reflective tape.
2. Santa had no reflective triangles. He needs two for his sleigh and one for each reindeer.
3.The Sleigh has no rear number plate light.
4. No working indicator lights.
5 no working windscreen wipers - Santa tried to point out that there was no windscreen. They wouldn't budge.:(
6. He had no jack and was not carrying a serviceable spare reindeer - the space-saving Thompson's Gazelle in his trunk was said to be unacceptable.
7. No fire extinguisher

Santa paid the $330 fine and has not been seen in these parts ever since. With even more stringent traffic regulations in place, his return is unlikely.

That's no great loss to me Lenardzw. Santa never gave me anything anyway. My parents got all my presents.

Actually I never have understood why parents would buy their kids gifts, then give the credit to some fat guy who isn't even real. If I ever had kids you can bet they would know where the presents really came from.

You should read about Saint Nicholas, it's really beautiful why he started giving gifts. He wanted to help people. I read a story about him to my Sunday school class this year. Santa is magic for little kid's. My kid's don't believe anymore but I tell them, we all are Santa when we give.

Yes modern day Santa is different but I think every kid should hear how It started or where the idea came from. No flying Reindeer or a million toys just a person wanting to help others in need. Although we did the whole Santa thing with my kid's and it was fun. The ages when they believe in Santa are really fun times. I know a lot of Christian people poo poo the whole Santa thing, I say to each his own.

in Norway we translate santa to julenisse(n)

Ironically, a traditional Norwegian nisse is something in between mischievous and evil :p
Now much alive of that folklore now, but most people used to believe in them back in the "good old days" :p

I'm not expecting to have kids, but if I did they would learn about Santa from the book the Autobiography of Santa Claus (a great history of the Santa legends as well as other Christmas traditions where Santa says several times that the most important part of Christmas is celebrating Jesus birth). And then I might just tell them that to save time Santa shipped his toys out early now in boxes from Amazon.
