You should probably decide what kind of firing system you prefer... Do you want a SA/DA with an exposed hammer? De-cocker, or safety? Or do you prefer a striker-fired pistol? Polymer or steel?
You should be aware there is a point of diminishing returns on cost, as well.... a $1500 Sig is not three times as good as a $450 Glock.
I have two "low-end" 9mm's... My carry gun is a Taurus PT111 G2... 12 rounds, compact, double strike capability, and never failed to fire, feed, eject. I've only got about 800-900 rounds through it, though. I used this one to get my LTC (CHL), and shot a perfect score with it. (not difficult to do, though)
My other cheapie is a Canik TP9 SA... which is a full sized 9mm.... almost exactly the same dimensions as the Glock 17. It has also never failed... but I've only got 400-500 rounds through it.
The Taurus cost me $235 out the door, and the Canik was $325.
There are any number of fine 9mm's out there... lots of people love the ergo's of the CZ series of pistols. Walther makes some nice models. Ruger makes a nice one in the SR9, or 9E.... I don't know anything about their "American" series...
If you want to go high-end, look at Sig and HK.... LOTS of choices...

Good, polymer guns are having the same revolution right now that cell phones are having. It's getting easier and easier to afford something that holds 10+ rounds and won't let you down.
Granted, there are a lot of terrible guns out there too. Just be careful, but enjoy the process of finding what is good for you.
There was a time where I swore Glock wasn't for me and experience has convinced me that it's the gun I would fare best with if I ever needed it.
Unless I'm in a fitted suit or tight-ish sweater. Then it's a Walther PPS M2

Yesterday, my girlfriend thought I was insane when I showed her I had the G19 at my bedside and the Walther under my pillow just in case somebody gets to the G19 first.
She called me insane because I live in a safe neighborhood.

This is the recommendation that I would give to anyone purchasing any firearm. Many large gun clubs have weapons that you can rent, put a couple of boxes through each handgun you are considering. A handgun that may feel good after a couple of rounds may bite your hand in a bad way after a couple of magazines.
Yeah, ultimately that's what you've gotta do. Internet recommendations will only get you so far.

The officer stared at her in disbelief. "Ma'am, what are you afraid of?"
Looking him dead in the eye, she replied: "Absolutely nothing!"
Reminds me of the story I heard when a police man stopped a 79-year-old lady for speeding. While screening her drivers license, he noticed she had a concealed carry permit and when he gave her license back he asked her if she was carrying.

I've decided to send off my 10/22 trigger assembly to a company called Brimstone... They take the stock trigger, and turn it into one of three different levels of wonderful.
I have already discovered that the stock Ruger barrel is capable of at least MOA accuracy.... and that was with the less than target grade standard, stock trigger. I imagine the trigger pull is at least 6-7 pounds, with quite a bit of creep.
For less than $90 total, I can get their Tier 2 trigger job, which replaces the trigger itself, has an overtravel screw mounted, and a reported "glass rod breaking" trigger pull of right around 2 pounds.
I'm excited... I'll probably send it off tomorrow or the next day... should be back in a week.

Any particular reason you didn't do the trigger mods yourself? I've heard very good things about Brimstone's work, but when it comes to spending money, I am tighter than bark on a tree, so I made the mods myself and I've had amazing success with both my 10/22 rifles. Even with my bullpup and it's goofy trigger linkage.
