So, this is all about one little word with a lot of meaning behind it. And you know me, I've got a thing about words and meanings.

The poor thing has been misjudged/blamed/condemned since the early 1800's. Can't we give it a break and use it for what it means?

It's in the Bible. Are there any words in the Bible that God wouldn't use?

So, let's stop assuming a word about judgement is a curse word. It's not. It's judgement/blame/condemn. Dagnabit!

we always look at 'judgment' as 'justice', when we come to understand God's Judgment,
and then of course, when you are a 'member of the Body of Christ', you are enabled to
judge your fellows and offer/help/succor them, in order that they may 'grow' by
His Spiritual Food, as The Holy Spirit teaches us...

My problem with it is that most people are using it lightly. It's quite serious to damn something.

It's not that the word itself is a curse word it's how it's used. For instance I can't see Jesus using it as most do like saying **** it god **** it but he would say that satan is damned to hell.

See the words only have certain meanings in how they are used and it's fitting that damning people to hell is a curse word because you are literally cursing people to hell. There are other words in the bible that are called curse words but I don't like using them mainly because it was drilled into my upbringing that it's cussing. Like when the bible speaks of the whore of Babylon if I would have even mentioned that verse in church school as a kid I would get in trouble

When people use it as in ""damn you"" they are actually damning another person to the eternal lake of fire... Something they have no authority or power to do.. So they are using a very serious word and 99% of people who use it have little to no understanding of what the word actually means..

A person may use it if they fully understand the word and are giving someone else warning that they are currently on a road leading to damnation. Warning a person of damnation is not the same as damning that person..

Have you looked at the links? Not half as serious as people seem to think it is.

But it's not a curse word and you're an adult. I really became an "I'm holier that you" thing.

That's the excuse. It's not the truth. When my car breaks, it becomes a damn car. I don't think cars are going to hell. I have never met a person who truly means to condemn a person or thing to hell by using that word. Seems reasonable not to, since we can't.

You don't think it is serious to damn something to hell? (I did look 2 of the links).

But really, I have no problem with the word when used correctly. However, we are supposed to refrain from anything that has the appearance of evil, and for the most part the people who are swearing every other word appear evil! Also, if you were to say "damn" conversationally, what would you do when you REALLY needed it? I have friends who still remember "The one time" they ever heard me swear. It was that memorable. It wasn't that I slipped and started cussing up a blue streak; I believe it was something like after an emotionally draining time I said: "This is one damnable day." Yes, I really meant it. And they knew I did!

Cussing sometimes on Social Media is fine IMHO. Kids hear it all the time.
Boundaries.

In a forum such as this one or in a serious discussion? Not usually the right time.

*Shrug*

I try not to be legalistic, but instead realistic, and the truth is that we live in a fallen world.

Let the record show that certain parties and affiliates of the board directory have noted the expression of the data presented by the parties involved in presenting it as it presents itself. The board directory has interpreted such data and processed it.

I know.

But even so I don't use such language regardless if it's considered a curse word or not for this reason-
Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Colossians 3 8-10 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

I admit I have much to work on this but I want my words to be utterly clean uplifting building up and free from anything that might be considered vulgar. I don't judge anyone for using such words but I myself must hold myself to a higher standard

You thought God should take a 24 hour period and send it to hell?

And, for that matter, isn't hell another word that became a not-a-curse word?

You didn't have to explain a news story linked to 20 or more times because people didn't bother reading the link, "shared" their opinions on any ole subject, and told you you were wrong all 20 some times. (How can someone be wrong -- completely utterly wrong -- about a news story? If anyone was wrong, shouldn't it be the reporter? And, if the reporter were wrong, shouldn't there be some proof on his wrongness? Not the linker of said story?)

Higher than God's standards?

That is called arrogance.

That IS the point of this subject. We have gone higher than God's standards all in the effort to look good, not be good.

Hell is, indeed in the same category as damn. I use both in a religious sense. I know a girl who will not sing a song if the lyrics say "Oh my God" Because so many people use it as a cuss word :(. (Is she strange? Yes. Does it get across a point? Yes. SO many people use christian words as cuss words that the Christians aren't comfortable saying them!)

No, I don't think God will literally damn something to hell when you say "damn" But you're asking Him to.

I'm not that presumptive. I don't ask God to do things I already know he's not going to do.

The car becomes a damn car because I'm judging it for its action (or, often, its lack of action. lol) It beats kicking it. And what am I supposed to say, "blessed car?" It's not blessed! (I'm blessed that it still works after all these years, but it is not blessed.) Nor is it acting blessed. It's acting poorly, so I hail condemnation of a different sort onto it. I'm telling it it is not acting carlike at all! Knock it off! Behave! Work! (At least until I can get it to the mechanic so it then becomes more carlike.)

? What on earth made you assume my standards were above God's standards? Don't confuse me learning to hold my tongue and to keep it clean as holding standards above God's. This isn't a matter of looking good for me it's a matter of being good inside you cannot clean the outside of a cup and not clean the inside.

They say what comes from the mouth is from the heart this is why I consider all the more what my words are if you call this arrogance then fine
