Jewish Burial Customs of Jesus' Day

1. First, the body was to be thoroughly washed.

2. The embalming process – Again, according to John, this was done according to the custom of the Jews.

a. All of the body members were straitened.
b. The women would sew the linen cloths together. No individual could be buried in fewer than three separate garments.
c. The spices were mixed with a gummy substance known as myrrh and placed between the folds of the wrappings. This served as a strong adhesive to secure the garments to the body.
d. Starting with the feet, they would begin wrapping the body with fine linen cloth with each member of the body wrapped individually.
e. They would then place the feet together and place the arms at the sides of the body and starting at the feet again, would wrap the entire body as far as the neck in a cocooned fashion.
f. A separate piece of cloth was then wrapped around the head (see John 11:44 as an example).

This was how Jesus' body was prepared.

Matthew 27:

57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.



Mark 15:

Joseph of Arimathaea took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen. Mary Magdelene, Mary and mother of Joses (and possibly other women according to Luke's record) witnessed Joseph placing the wrapped body in the sepulcher.




John 19:

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.


John's record includes additional information the women were not aware of: Nicodemus came with the myrrh and aloes and prepared the body as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

The women were not aware of what Nicodemus had done so they made preparation of sweet spices to anoint Him (Mark 16:1, Luke 23:56).

Good info,, a little off topic but real quick,, in scripture when the disciples set out on the boat across the lake when it was stormy windy and all. It says it was evening time, around dusk I think or close to it.. Then they rowed against the waves and all for like over 6 hours or so only to get about halfway across. Then Jesus came walking on the water at the four watch after 3am.. I don't know why that strikes me as wild how long they rowed against that for many hours it seems to me.. lol....

Yeah ... that was when John Baptist was killed. Jesus went out into the wilderness to be alone with Father. Multitudes followed Him. He taught them, fed them, sent them away, then sent His disciples on ahead of Him. He then went into the mountain to pray. Then went to meet the disciples in the boat … walking on the water.

John's record includes additional information the women were not aware of: Nicodemus came with the myrrh and aloes and prepared the body as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

The women were not aware of what Nicodemus had done so they made preparation of sweet spices to anoint Him (Mark 16:1, Luke 23:56).

I would say that the women were indeed aware of what had been done because Luke informs us that "the women also,... followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid." This means that the tomb had not yet been sealed and that they had gone in to inspect the body observing how it had been prepared. The fragrance of the spice would have been profoundly obvious to them. Not only that but, they knew what was involved in the wrapping process. Luke also makes appoint that the women then returned home to prepare additional spices. Now, whether these additional spices were intended to be added to the outer wrappings or whether they were simply to be placed in the sepulchre we are not told. I could be mistaken but if memory serves, this was a common practice. If I am mistaken on this point let some one correct me.

jewish people determine when the day starts and ends by the Genesis account and then there was evening and morning.. This is why they went by a new day started in the evening, and yes Jesus also followed Jewish traditions..

Yes scripture does say what makes up a day.. Jesus said it as well,, quote,, isn't there 12 hours in a day and 12 hours in a night.. Yes This is true one complete day is 24 hours, but there is no connection of that As to being a reference on exactly how long those three days and nights were.. Technically by scriptures own words is that the death of Christ happened at the ninth hour and the resurrection happen at some point during the night before dawn of early Morning of the first day of the week. The resurrection happened at some point in the night 1am or 4am no human has ever known that exact hour accept Jesus, God..

But the resurrection didn't happened at the ninth hour of the first day.. Which yes would make up that 72 hour three days n three nights.. Sorry the best you can do is say yes it was three days and three nights but those days didn't add up to 72 hours and that's all I'm saying... It's illogical to come up with such a theory to shrink or stretch the time.. It was three days and three nights but not figured by a hourly watch...

Sorry but if your going to throw out there that scripture says 12 hours and 12 hours, you aught to explain it alittle better than just that... if you didn't mean to say each of those days added up to 72 hours, shouldn't place things that get people sucked into believing that's what you meant..

Look, we know from scripture that Jesus was placed in the tomb at the setting of the sun on Wednesday the preparation day, because the following day was a 'high day/sabbath, after that day followed friday the prep day for the weekly sabbath when the women prepared the ointments and the next day they rested according to the commandment...that makes 3 complete nights and 3 complete days until saturday sunset, remember He was already risen by early sunday morning.
Jesus did not say we are to count 3 days and 3 nights from the time He died or even from the time He was delivered up...no...He said from the time He would be 'in the heart of the earth'. He was not in the tomb until the sun was downing on wed and He was not in the tomb after sunset saturday. We do not need 'eyewitnessess because His own word is truth as to how long that is - 72 hours !
Now some are also saying that 'being in the earth does not mean He was in the tomb - so tell me where else He was ...even the angel on His bed must have been confused Mk 16v5.
People fabricating their own stories around this event is not helping...just believe what scripture says.

Well there you go again, thinking that the 'jewish custom of burial was acceptable, when you see from SCRIPTURE that everything happened' according to scripture' and 'not jewish custom 1Cor 15v3,4.
IF their hasty burial was acceptable WHY did the women prepare spices to ANOINT Jesus' body ?

I have no doubt you feel this is correct and that you are sincere in what you believe but please, just for a moment, let us say for the sake of argument that you are correct and Jesus did die on Wednesday (he didn't but lest just say he did). We are told that he died at the ninth hour which is 3:00 pm. If he has to be in the tomb for a full 72 hours, on what time of what day does Jesus have to rise to satisfy the 72 hours?

No. It is only a possibility. The only options for the additional spices would be for them to place them on the outside of the wrappings or around the body. The wrappings are already sealed by the mixture of the spices that serve as a glue to keep the wrappings in place. By the next day the wrappings would have been firmly sealed in place.

The fact that σαββάτων is plural does not necessarily suggests two separate sabbaths. The plural form of σαββάτῳ is often used even when only one sabbath day is clearly meant.

The word Sabbath is a rest term. Replacing it with a time sensitive word (week) I would think takes away for the meaning of the word rest (Sabbath ) and the rest of the sentence.

It is not at the end of the week(sabbath) as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week (sabbath)

But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? Mat 26:5

The disciples did not understand and called it to question and Christ gave His understanding. It represented the gospel

For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Whosesoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. Mat 26:12

I think that was Thursday the beginning of the three days and three nights, in the heart of the earth (the belly of the fish) a term I believe that speaks of great suffering, using the word hell to describe it.. It is not the word tomb or grave. God cannot die.

I am not sure I am understanding your point. σαββάτῳ, or some form thereof, is the only word I know of in the NT that is translated as either Sabbath or week no matter whether that Sabbath is a weekly Sabbath or a special Sabbath.

yes you would think that answers all human reasoning, but it does not. Some just won't accept 'Jesus own' prediction Mat 12v40.

Their own burial customs may satisfy the Jews (who got many things wrong according to Jesus) but Jesus died for the whole world and that needs answers from SCRIPTURE....not people's customs and habits...bad ones at that.

I already worked it out for you day by day in #146....from the time Jesus was placed in the tomb to the time He resurrected HE HIMSELF predicted 3 night time periods and 3 day time periods.
If Jesus was placed in the tomb friday sunset (as you believe) that would take His resurrection into the following week according to Jesus' own prediction. We are told He was already risen very early sunday morning...so where are the 3 nights and 3 days ?

Please also remember 'He was ''already risen'' when He was first seen on sunday - He was ''not just rising then'' --it means He rose ''before He was seen''. He rose at sunset on the Sabbath, 3 days and 3 nights after having been placed in the tomb on the day of preparation before the 'first day of unl bread which was an annual sabbath .
We can go through it again if you like !
